Some of Britney Spears' fans may need a reminder that few know what goes on behind closed doors.
Amid news that some fans are protesting Spears' stay in a treatment facility, a new report from TMZ details the private battle Spears has faced as her doctors worked to figure out an appropriate mix of medications to stabilize her mental health. The process involved "wean[ing] Britney off the existing meds. This cannot be done quickly and there's a risk of suicide if it's not done right -- it's that serious."
After Spears had effectively stopped her past form of treatment, doctors started her on a new drug combination. However, according to TMZ, the new cocktail wasn't quite right: "There were errors that made Britney unstable and unwilling to cooperate with doctors."

Some fans have suggested that Spears' father, Jamie, is using his decade-long role as conservator to force Spears to take meds and enter treatment. The #FreeBritney hashtag emerged as part of those rumors. About a dozen fans chanting “Hands off, Britney” and “Justice for Britney” gathered Monday in West Hollywood as they claimed the pop star is being held against her will.
However, TMZ notes, Spears' father's conservatorship does not legally allow him to dictate what drugs she takes or whether she enters a mental health facility. Just one day prior to the protest, Spears was granted a brief leave from her treatment program to spend Easter Sunday with her family.
Adding fuel to the #FreeBritney fire, whether intentionally or not, was Spears' mother, Lynne, who "liked" a slew of eyebrow-raising Instagram comments such as "I really hope your ailing ex husband isn’t keeping your daughter somewhere against her will."
Weeks ahead of Spears' entry into the facility, she shared news of her father's own health battle. In late 2018, his colon ruptured, and the near-fatal situation required extensive surgery and a very long recovery period.
Although the singer was crushed to cancel her scheduled performance run, "it's important to always put your family first," she wrote in January. "And that's the decision I had to make."
