Detective Pikachu pulls in estimated $170+ million in its debut weekend, becomes biggest opening for a video game movie - GoNintendo

Detective Pikachu's weekend box office has come in, and it's a record-breaker. The title has pulled in an estimated $170+ million worldwide, which is enough to grab it the record for the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie. With $58 million coming from the domestic side, that also means the movie holds a record for the biggest game movie opening in the U.S. specifically.

'Avengers: Endgame' wins third weekend in a row as 'Detective Pikachu' takes No. 2 - CNN

That was enough to win the weekend over "Pokémon Detective Pikachu." Warner Bros.' live-action film set in the world of Pokémon notched an estimated $58 million domestically to take the No. 2 spot.
The film, which features Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu, was expected to make $50 million to $55 million at the North American box office this weekend, according to analysts.
'Detective Pikachu' can't solve the riddle of live-action Pokemon
As for "Endgame," its climb to the top of the box office charts continues.
The superhero film, which shattered box office records with a $1.2 billion global opening last month, is the second-highest grossing film of all time. Only 2009's "Avatar" has made more at the global box office.
"Endgame" has made $2.4 billion globally. It was the fastest film in history to make $2 billion. That includes $724 million domestically, which makes "Endgame" the third highest-grossing film in North American history.
Hollywood looks to end out May with a strong slate of films. "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum," "Aladdin," "Rocketman" and "Godzilla: King of Monsters" are all on the slate for the rest of the month.
"The competitive nature of the summer movie season is now starting to materialize," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore (SCOR), told CNN Business.
The record-breaking success of "Endgame" and solid start for "Detective Pikachu" has helped jumpstart a sluggish year at the domestic box office.
The 2019 North American box office is down roughly 9.5% from the same time last year. Before "Endgame" was released, it was down roughly 17%.

Wrestler Silver King dies after collapsing in ring during fight in London - Fox News

Professional wrestler and former WCW star Silver King died Saturday after collapsing in the ring during a fight in London, officials said.

The 51-year-old wrestler, whose real name is César Cuauhtémoc González Barrón, was performing in the Lucha Libre show at the Roundhouse when he died, organizers said on Twitter.

"Last night Silver King sadly lost his life during an event at the Roundhouse. At this stage the details are still being investigated so we don't have more information we can share," Roundhouse wrote. "Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and all of the Lucha Libre team."

Witnesses told the Camden New Journal that Silver King's co-performers did not initially realize there was a problem after he collapsed to the floor after a kick to the side of his body.

“It seemed to be part of the show at first, but then he didn’t get up – and then the medical team was on the stage," a member of the audience told the newspaper. "Everybody was cleared out and lots of police and ambulances were there.”

After Barrón initially collapsed, fans chanted "Silver, Silver," before being told there would be a break in the show until the venue was cleared out, according to the Camden New Journal.

The London Ambulance Service told Sky News that paramedics arrived five minutes after being called at 10:21 p.m., but the wrestler was pronounced dead at the scene.

WWE said in a statement it was "saddened" to learn of his death.

"A champion luchador in his native Mexico, Silver King, real name César Cuauhtémoc González Barrón, entertained audiences across the globe, and was a standout in WCW’s Cruiserweight division in the late ’90s," WWE said. "Outside the ring, he appeared under a mask as the villainous Ramses in the popular 2006 comedy “Nacho Libre.”

"WWE extends its deepest condolences to Silver King’s family, friends and fans," the group added.

Box Office: 'Pokemon: Detective Pikachu' Nabs Record $58 Million Weekend - Forbes

'Detective Pikachu'

Warner Bros.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu opened with solid $58 million this weekend. That gives it a promising 2.8x weekend multiplier, even as it earned 9.8% of its opening weekend (slightly high for a kid flick) on Thursday night. Yes, I was hoping it would break out bigger, and yes the soft-ish $41 million opening in China raises an eyebrow or two, but Legendary and Warner Bros.’ $150 million-budgeted comic fantasy just scored the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game movie. It earned $11 million more than the $47 million launch, in 2001, of Angelina Jolie’s Tomb Raider.

Adjusted for inflation, it’s the second-biggest such launch between Pokémon: The First Movie ($31 million in 1999/$55 million adjusted) and Tomb Raider ($75 million adjusted). That I’m disappointed that it didn’t score way above tracking (like Godzilla in 2014) doesn’t mean it’s a disappointment. We’ve seen a few high profile biggies (Glass, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Aquaman) open right in line with the initial tracking and then leg out. While there was a strong response to the trailers and the goofy viral marketing, the reviews were merely “pretty good” without being superlative.

Yes, it’s the first video game movie to get a “fresh” designation on Rotten Tomatoes, but we weren’t talking raves on par with the first The LEGO Movie which eventually opened with $69 million despite $40 million-plus tracking predictions. The film skewed comparatively young (27% under-18 and 49% under-25), meaning that WB will have to hope that non-chaperone adults decide to check it out over the next few weeks, ideally before WB and Legendary's Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens on May 31.

For reference, the live-action/animated flick, a kind of Zootopia/Who Framed Roger Rabbit? detective flick (minus the racism parables), stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the title character and Justin Smith as the human protagonist who teams with the Pokémon to solve his father’s murder. Maybe I mistook awareness and curiosity (there was a lot of outside-the-bubble curiosity) for intent-to-consume interest from the general populace. Perhaps, come what may, a $58 million launch (on par with Shazam! counting its sneak previews) IS overperforming in this Netflix/VOD era.

The hope is that the film will leg out like Kong: Skull Island ($168 million from a $61 million debut) or The Great Gatsby ($144 million from a $50 million launch on this weekend in 2013) and end up with around $160 million-to-$165 million domestic. And if it blows up overseas as well, well, all the better. If it tops $155 million domestic, it’ll be the biggest video game movie ever domestically and the second-biggest when adjusted for inflation, behind only Tomb Raider ($131 million in 2001/$204 million adjusted).

Meghan Markle celebrates first Mother's Day with new photo of royal baby Archie - Page Six

New mom Meghan Markle celebrated her first Mother’s Day on Sunday, sharing a new photo of son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on her and Prince Harry‘s official Instagram account.

In the sweet post, which honored mothers everywhere, Meghan, 37, is seen cupping her newborn’s feet, as forget-me-not flowers, the favorites of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, are shown in the background.

“Paying tribute to all mothers today – past, present, mothers-to-be, and those lost but forever remembered. We honor and celebrate each and every one of you,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex penned.

“Today is Mother’s Day in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Japan, and several countries across Europe. This is the first Mother’s Day for The Duchess of Sussex,” the captioned continued. “Quote from ‘lands’: my
mother was my first country; the first place i ever lived.”

Though the United Kingdom celebrated Mother’s Day on March 31, Meghan and Harry’s special delivery arrived in the early hours of Monday morning.

“We’re both absolutely thrilled, we’re so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there, it’s been amazing so we just wanted to share this with everybody,” Harry, 34, told the media following the birth of his first child.

On Wednesday, Meghan and Harry introduced their newborn to the world, revealing his name hours later.

“It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing, I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy,” Meghan gushed.

Royal correspondent Omid Scobie previously revealed in an article for BAZAAR.com that Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, "has been on hand since April 16 and will spend the weekend—and Mother's Day!—with the new family of three." It's heartwarming to know that Meghan will be spending her very first Mother's Day as a new mom with her own mother. Plus, as baby Archie is Ragland's very first grandchild, the occasion is made all the more special.

Meghan and Harry introduced their son to the world in St. George's Hall in Windsor just two days after his birth. For the special occasion, Meghan wore a chic, white, Wales Bonner trench dress, with her favorite BB Suede Manolo Blahnik pumps, and a Jennifer Meyer necklace.
