Unless you live on a deserted island with zero access to wifi, then you’ve no doubt heard by now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed a son on Monday, May 6. Prince Harry made an appearance outside Frogmore Cottage and excitedly updated reporters on the birth, his happiness, and the strength of all women, inspiring a chorus of “Awwwws!” from the audience. One thing he didn’t mention? The place where the birth took place.
Considering the new dad wouldn’t want to leave his wife’s side, the location of the announcement led royal fans to question if Meghan Markle did experience a home birth like she wanted. But Buckingham Palace just confirmed that in truth, the Duchess of Sussex snuck away to give birth in a hospital and even the top royal officials didn’t know about it.
Baby Sussex was probably overdue
Meghan Markle’s actual due date is still a mystery to most people, but since people believe she was expecting to give birth in late April or early May, they think the baby arrived late. If that’s true, there’s a possibility she was induced.
While many doctors will allow pregnant women to remain pregnant two weeks past their due dates, Meghan Markle’s age probably played a factor in how late she could be. It’s likely that she was closely monitored for the entire pregnancy. Any indication of distress for the baby would result in induction to preserve the health of the unborn child.
No one knew Meghan Markle was being taken to the hospital
Daily Mail correspondent Rebecca English explained that even senior royals weren’t made aware that Meghan Markle was heading to the hospital sometime Sunday evening. While we still don’t know which hospital baby boy Sussex was born in, royal insiders are betting it’s nearby Portland Hospital, which is also where Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were delivered.
Prince Harry and Doria Ragland, Meghan Markle’s mom, went with her to the hospital. But other than those close family members, no one knew about the secret hospital visit until after the Duchess of Sussex was already there.
The Duchess of Sussex skipped the post-birth photos
It came as no surprise that Prince Harry announced the baby’s birth solo since the couple already explained that they’d be skipping the iconic post-birth photo call on the hospital steps. Prince William and Kate Middleton take a different route, appearing for photos on the steps of the Lindo Wing mere hours after the birth for each of their children. Princess Diana did the same for both her sons.
But Prince Harry and Meghan Markle already explained that they weren’t planning to follow this tradition and would instead take time to “celebrate privately as a family” before releasing photos. Royal fans were nervous that they wouldn’t know about the birth at all, however that turned out to be inaccurate.
Now everyone is patiently awaiting the pictures of the newborn royal baby plus an announcement on the name. We can’t wait to see his precious little face!
