Adam Sandler will not collect an Oscar, but at least he won 'best personality' - CNN

Well, hold on. Let's go back -- to Saturday, at the 35th Film Independent Spirit Awards. There, the funnyman stepped to a podium to collect his award for best male lead for his role in "Uncut Gems" and let everyone know exactly what he thought of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences overlooking him.
Adopting a voice that sounded much like that of Bobby Boucher -- the titular character in Sandler's "The Waterboy" -- the 53-year-old opened, saying, "I stand before you trembling with ample glee..."
After riffing on his alleged unpopularity -- he nodded to his and awards host Aubrey Plaza's movie, "Funny People," which he said was the last time "critics pretended not to hate me" -- Sandler drew laughs with his mocking mention of being "quote-unquote snubbed by the Academy" a few weeks ago, when Oscars nominees were announced.
Adam Sandler plays gambler and jeweler Howard Ratner in "Uncut Gems."
He likened it to the time in high school he was passed over for the yearbook's "best-looking" title -- an honor he recalled being bestowed upon "a jean jacket-wearing, feather-haired douchebag by the name of Skipper Jenkins."
Sandler instead received the "best personality" accolade for his class, he said. Award presenters Octavia Spencer and Rachel Brosnahan giggled on stage behind him.
"Tonight, as I look around this room, I realize the Independent Spirit Awards are the best personality awards of Hollywood," he said as the stars in attendance cracked up and applauded. "Let all those feather-haired, douchebag motherf***ers get their Oscars tomorrow night. Their handsome good looks will fade in time, while our independent personalities will shine on forever!"
"Uncut Gems" tells the story of Howard Ratner, a jewel dealer who is depending on selling a pricey opal to pay off his substantial gambling debts. To prepare for the role, Sandler shadowed jewelers from Manhattan's diamond district in their personal and professional lives.
Though the movie is a thriller, Sandler is better known for his comedy, and he was quick to show off the chops that he lent to playing the likes of Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison.
He took a friendly shot at his fellow nominees for best male lead, who he said "will now and forever be known as the guys who lost to f***ing Adam Sandler."
Continuing his self-deprecation schtick, he spoke, facetiously, of his long history in independent film.
"In all seriousness, independent films have been a big part of the Adam Sandler ecosystem," he began before re-imagining important parts of his oeuvre. "From my first film, a fearless look into the American education system through the eyes of a privileged sociopath by the name of Billy f***ing Madison, to my searing exploration of American college foosball and its manipulation of socially challenged athletes like the Mr. Bobby Boucher, I have tried to sell my truths with a truly independent spirit, while also cashing some truly disturbingly large paychecks."
Sandler also acknowledged the star privilege he enjoys in comparison to other honorees. While many in attendance lived in their car outside Ralphs supermarket, begging for nickels on crowdfunding, he joked, "all Sandler had to was get Ted Sorandos stoned" -- a reference to the Netflix executive who helped broker Sandler's multi-picture deal with the company.
He ribbed others involved in bringing "Uncut Gems" to the big screen as well, including the directors and one of its head honchos.
"I want to thank some people first off -- of course, the person who shares my life, my home, my laughter, my tears: Scott Rudin," he quipped of the movie's executive producer. "Two years ago, Scott said the words that would forever change my life. 'No, those aren't homeless rabbis. Those are the Safdie brothers.'"
Benny and Josh Safdie, whose own father worked in the diamond district, won the award for best director. They were largely known for directing short and independent films before their 2017 film, "Good Time," was named a nominee for the Palme d'Or, the highest honor at the Cannes Film Festival. The brothers directed a short with Sandler -- "Goldman v Silverman," about two Times Square street performers -- that released last month.
Toward the end of his remarks, Sandler ditched the Bobby Boucher voice to offer heartfelt appreciation to his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, for urging him to do "Uncut Gems," and his wife, Jackie, who helped him run lines for the film.
And the four dudes who will forever be known for losing to Sandler? Chris Galust ("Give Me Liberty"), Kelvin Harrison Jr. ("Luce"), Robert Pattinson ("The Lighthouse") and Matthias Schoenaerts ("The Mustang"). If only they'd had a real shot at winning.

Billy Porter strikes gold on the Oscars 2020 red carpet - Page Six

Billy Porter certainly delivered on his promise of a bold outfit for the 2020 Oscars.

The “Pose” star and fashion favorite, 50, hit the red carpet at Sunday’s awards show at LA’s Dolby Theatre in a custom Giles Deacon Couture look consisting of a gold feathered top and graphic printed ball skirt. Matching gilded lace-up heels by Jimmy Choo and Atelier Swarovski jewelry completed his outfit.

Last week, Porter was overheard teasing the look at a party, saying, “I have something cooking for the Oscars. It’s a surprise. I can’t tell any of you. Just you wait.”

This seemingly phoenix-inspired ensemble comes exactly one year after the actor made his Oscars debut in a now-iconic black velvet tuxedo gown by Christian Siriano. He recently announced his plan to bring back the dress for his upcoming appearance on “Sesame Street,” prompting a few critics to clutch their pearls.

Porter clapped back, telling Page Six, “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people — the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex.”

Although 2019 was the year the “Kinky Boots” star rocketed to style superstardom, he’s been making headlines with his sartorial choices in 2020 so far, too; he swanned into January’s Golden Globes wearing a white feathered suit by Alex Vinash, and captivated the crowd with a sparkly remote-controlled hat on the Grammys red carpet.

Oscars 2020: Start time, how to stream and watch the award show online - CNET

twitter-in-stream-wide-joker

Tune in to see if Parasite wins best picture (as it rightly should).

CJ Entertainment

Yes, it's Oscars day and the ceremony is just hours away. Hollywood's biggest night will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood tonight (Sunday, Feb. 9). All the other major awards shows are behind us (get your 100% accurate Oscars predictions here), so it's time to prepare for how to watch or stream the awards show online. Or you can boycott the Oscars entirely, depending on how you feel about the lack of diversity in major acting categories and best director (Greta Gerwig was sadly snubbed).

But if you're a Joker fan, hold your breath during the 11 categories the most nominated movie is up for (yes, the most nominated movie at the Oscars is a comic book movie). Parasite has surged into the best picture conversation with big wins in the precursor awards shows, while 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood flex 10 nominations each. Check out how to watch the Oscars (which are going hostless for the second year in a row) below.

Read more: Oscars 2020 predictions and snubs | Oscar nominations 2020

Date and start time

The Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

US: The Oscars start at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET tonight: Sunday, Feb. 9.

UK: The Oscars start at 1 a.m. GMT on Monday, Feb. 10.

Australia: The Oscars start at midday AEST on Monday, Feb. 10.

How to watch the Oscars online

The Oscars will air on ABC in the US. To stream online, there are a couple of options:

  • ABC is streaming the live broadcast of the Oscars on the ABC website, but only to specific cities and only after you sign in with a participating pay TV provider -- typically a cable company, satellite provider or livestreaming service.
  • Another option is Locast, which streams local broadcasters, including ABC, in certain large US cities, for free. And of course, you could always use an antenna to try to pick up the ABC station in your area (DVR optional).
  • If you subscribe to a live TV streaming service that carries ABC in your city, you can use it to watch the Oscars too. AT&T TV Now (previously DirecTV Now), Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV all carry ABC in most US cities. All of them offer a seven-day free trial, so you can sign up now and cancel after the ceremony if you want. Note that Sling TV, Fubo TV, AT&T Watch Now and Philo don't carry ABC at all.

Disclosure: CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of products featured on this page.

DirecTV Now's basic, $50-a-month Live a Little package includes ABC. You can use its channel lookup tool to see if you get a live feed of Fox and the other local networks in your ZIP code. Read full review.

YouTube TV costs $50 a month and includes ABC. Plug in your ZIP code on its channel lineup page to see what live, local networks are available where you live.

  • Australia: The Oscars will air live on Seven.
  • UK: You can watch the Oscars using a Sky Cinema Pass with Now TV (a seven-day free trial is offered).

How to stream the red carpet

The earlier red carpet proceedings will be streamed live on Twitter. You can watch by following the Academy Awards official Twitter account. Sister site Entertainment Tonight Online and as usual the E network, available on many live TV streaming services, will have Oscars pre-coverage all day Sunday, with E's red carpet coverage beginning at 2 p.m. PT. Elsewhere, ABC has its own pre-red carpet coverage starting at 2:30 p.m. PT, and its Oscars Opening Ceremony: Live From the Red Carpet starts at 3:30 p.m. PT.

Snoop Dogg: I didn't threaten Gayle King, but she 'was very disrespectful towards Kobe Bryant' | TheHill - The Hill

Snoop Dogg said Saturday he wasn't threatening CBS News anchor Gayle KingGayle KingKobe Bryant's complicated legacy sparks tough conversations Susan Rice warns Snoop Dogg to 'back the **** off' attacks on CBS's Gayle King for Kobe Bryant interview Elizabeth Smart says man touched her while she slept on flight last summer MORE over a recent interview in which she broached the Kobe Bryant rape case following his death last week.

The clarification comes after CBS News president Susan Zirinsky said the network "fully supports" King while vigorously condemning “reprehensible” threats made against King.

"When I said what I said, I spoke for the people who felt like Gayle was very disrespectful towards Kobe Bryant and his family," Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., said in a video on Instagram on Saturday.

"Now with that being said, what do I look like, wanting some harm to come to a 70-year-old woman? I was raised way better than that," the 48-year-old entertainer continued. "I don’t want no harm to come to her and I didn’t threaten her. All I did was say, ‘Check it out, you outta pocket for what you doing and we watching you. Have a little bit more respect for Vanessa, her babies and Kobe Bryant’s legacy.’”

King, a co-anchor on "CBS This Morning," is 65.

The rapper's latest comments come after he posted an earlier Instagram video in which he appeared to threaten King, telling her to "back off, b----, before we come get you." The comment was made amid criticism over her addressing the Bryant rape case.

Oprah WinfreyOprah Gail WinfreyEntrepreneurship: The real team sport American Dirt: 'Cancel culture' embraces book burning in the digital age Hillicon Valley: Senate report on Russian interference expected next week | Facebook targets coronavirus misinformation | FCC says wireless carriers broke law by selling location data MORE, who is close to King, said last week that the CBS News veteran has been the target of death threats following her interview earlier this week with former WNBA star Lisa Leslie in which King raised the sexual assault charge against Bryant in a 2003 civil case that was ultimately settled.

The controversy was amplified further after former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice took exception to Snoop Dogg's threat by posting a warning on Twitter.

“This is despicable,” Rice wrote. “Gayle King is one of the most principled, fair and tough journalists alive. Snoop, back the **** off. You come for @GayleKing, you come against an army. You will lose, and it won’t be pretty.”

Bryant died late last month in a helicopter crash that also killed his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and eight others.

His shocking death has set off waves of tributes to the NBA great, with some ofhis supporters responding with anger and threats to people who have raised the allegations against Bryant.

Bryant was accused in 2003 of sexually assaulting a Colorado hotel employee. The charges were later dropped after the employee declined to cooperate with prosecutors. She would eventually settle with Bryant outside of court, and Bryant acknowledged in an apology that the woman did not feel that their encounter was consensual.

King evoked that case in the interview with Leslie.

“It’s been said that his legacy is complicated because of a sexual assault charge that was dismissed in 2003, 2004. Is it complicated for you, as a woman, as a WNBA player?” King asked Leslie.

"It’s not complicated for me at all," Leslie replied. "I just never see — have ever seen him being the kind of person that would be — do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That’s just not the person that I know."

"Lisa, you wouldn’t see it, though. As his friend, you wouldn’t see it," King said.

"And that's possible," replied Leslie. "I just don't believe that."

She added that the media "should be more respectful at this time."

King said she has received death threats over the interview.

She was noticeably absent from "CBS This Morning" on Friday as the controversy continued to grow.

'Birds of Prey' has weakest opening of any DC extended universe film - CNBC

Margot Robbie stars as Harley Quinn in Warner Bros. "Birds of Prey."

Warner Bros.

Even with critics singing praises for "Birds of Prey," the newest entrant in the DC extended universe didn't live up to its opening weekend expectations.

The long-awaited comic book film featuring the delightfully psychotic Harley Quinn hauled in around $33.25 million in North America, shy of the $40 million to $60 million that many analysts had predicted. It is the weakest opening of any film in Warner Bros.' DC extended universe.

It's possible that some moviegoers shied away from seeing the film in its opening weekend because of its ties to the not-so-beloved "Suicide Squad." However, with word of mouth, "Birds of Prey" could still have a solid box office run.

"Despite coming in a bit below expectations in North America, 'Birds Of Prey' was solid internationally and with great reviews and high marks from audiences, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and her flock could enjoy long-term playability in the coming weeks," Paul Deregarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, said.

The film debuted internationally to the tune of $48 million, bringing its worldwide gross to around $81.3 million.

The second-highest box office earner over the weekend was "Bad Boys For Life," garnering $12 million in ticket sales. After four weeks the film has hauled in $166.3 million in ticket sales in North America. Worldwide its tally is up to $336 million.

"1917," Universal's award season darling picked up an additional $9 million ahead of the Academy Awards Sunday. It has now collected $132.5 million domestically and $287.4 million globally.

"Dolittle" also continued to chug along this weekend. The poorly reviewed Robert Downey Jr. flick about the famed doctor who can speak to animals secured $6.66 million in ticket sales domestically, bringing its North American gross to $64 million and its global tally to $158.7 million. The film still has a ways to go to make back its $175 million production budget and its additional marketing spend.

Rounding out the top five films at the box office over the weekend was "Jumanji: The Next Level" which in its ninth weekend garnered $5.53 million. The film now has nabbed $298.4 million domestically and $768 million globally.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of CNBC and NBCUniversal. NBCUniversal distributed "1917" and "Dolittle."

Box Office: 'Birds of Prey' Grounded With $33.3M Bow - Hollywood Reporter

The Margot Robbie-led DC superhero pic opened almost $20 million behind expectations.

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn failed to gain altitude in its box office debut, earning a tepid $33.3 million from 4,236 theaters to mark one of the lowest domestic launches in modern times for a studio superhero pic.

The female-led film also struggled overseas, where it opened to $48 million from 78 markets for a global start of $81.3 million. The coronavirus is starting to impact moviegoing in Asian markets outside of China, including South Korea, where Birds of Prey grossed a muted $1.9 million.

Birds of Prey was never meant to score a mega-opening since it is a spinoff and sports an R rating. Still, the Warner Bros. and DC title had been tracking to start off with at least $50 million to $55 million in North America and $60 million or more offshore.

The movie — the weekend's only new wide release — could take solace in coming in No. 1.

Cathy Yan directed the Suicide Squad spinoff, which sees Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn. DCEU newcomers Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Black Canary), Rosie Perez (Renee Montoya), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress) and Ewan McGregor also star. Sue Kroll, Robbie and Bryan Unkeless produced.

The film faced challenges before getting to the big screen. Reshoots were ordered after the studio saw a first cut, with John Wick director Chad Stahelski enlisted to work alongside Yan and infuse Birds with more action.

Before now, the lowest opener in the DC Extended Universe was Shazam! with $53 million, not adjusted for inflation. Among other superhero titles with low openings, last year's X-Men installment Dark Phoenix debuted to $32.8 million domestically (that film cost far more to make than Birds of Prey).

The hope now is that Yan's movie will make up ground over Presidents Day weekend and in subsequent weeks, particularly if females start to flock to the film in big numbers.

So far, Birds of Prey is skewing male (53 percent), according to leading exit polling service PostTrak. CinemaScore, which only surveys a smattering of cinemas on Friday, showed a different result, with females making up 51 percent of its respondents.

Birds of Prey earned strong reviews, while receiving a B+ CinemaScore. One dampener could be the film's R-rating, which automatically makes it difficult for teenagers to partake. On Friday, 73 percent of ticket buyers were 25 and under, according to PostTrak.

The opening is another blow for Warner Bros., which has suffered a string of misses or under-performers in recent months. The big exception is Joker, which is up for a leading 11 nominations at today's Academy Awards ceremony, with Joaquin Phoenix considered a shoo-in for best actor.

Elsewhere, Sony hit Bad Boys for Life fell to No. 2 in its fourth weekend with $12 million for a domestic cume of $166.3 million.

Best picture contender 1917 saw a nice boost on the eve of the Oscars, declining just 5 percent to $9 million for a domestic cume of $132.5 million. The Amblin and Universal release marched to another $15.2 million overseas for a foreign tally of $154.8 million and $287.3 million globally.

Specialty pics Parasite and Jojo Rabbit, which are also up for top honors at the Oscars, likewise saw a nice bump. Parasite earned another $1.5 million, a gain of 9 percent from last weekend, for a domestic total of $35.5 million and more than $165 million globally. Jojo, which was up 13 percent, likewise grossed $1.5 million for a domestic cume of $30.3 million and $74.3 million globally.

Little Women, another best picture contender, took in $2.3 million domestically and $5.8 million overseas for a worldwide cume of $177 million, including $102.7 million domestically.

Elsewhere, Dolittle placed fourth in North America with $6.7 million for a domestic cume of $64 million and $94.7 million globally.

Jumanji: The Next Level rounded out the top five with $5.5 million for a domestic total of $298.6 million and $768 million worldwide.

Knives Out, which placed No. 8 in its eleventh weekend, all but jumped the $300 million mark globally after earning another $2.4 million domestically and $1.3 million overseas for a global tally through Sunday of $299.6 million.
