Did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Choose British Columbia Because of Their Privacy Laws? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made their desires known, they want to be left alone by the press. In October 2019, the prince issued a stern warning to the British media to leave him, his wife and his young son alone. In a scathing statement, Prince Harry accused the press of bullying Meghan Markle. The warning did little to slow coverage, and in January 2020, the couple announced that they’d be stepping down from royal life in pursuit of more privacy. They appear to have their sights set on British Columbia as their new home, and there might be an excellent reason; British Columbia has pretty intense privacy laws.

Are Meghan Markle and Prince Harry really settling in Canada?

Prince Harry arrived on Vancouver Island last week. He joined his wife and young son, leading most royal family followers to assume the pair are planning to set down roots in the area. That might not actually be the case, though. The couple may be merely vacationing in the area while they consider their options.

Rumors were swirling that they were eyeing a $35 million mansion in Vancouver’s most exclusive neighborhoods, but according to the New York Times, the listing agent claimed to be completely unaware of any interest by the couple.  There is some belief that the couple may be considering Victoria for its moderate climate, as well as Toronto. Before she became the Duchess of Sussex, Markle called Toronto home and forged plenty of friendships there. It’s possible she’d like to head back to an area where she felt supported.

Speaking of support systems, Markle’s mother resides in California, and there was some belief that the royal couple would eventually settle into the sunny landscape of Malibu to be close to Doria Ragland. Heading to California would offer the couple very little in the way of protection from the paparazzi, though, and, instead, would place the family in their direct sights. People believe New York City might be on the couple’s shortlist, as well. Regardless of the possible United States locations on media shortlists, Canada, no matter what city, seems like their most likely home base, and that’s because of the country’s privacy laws

What privacy laws does Canada have?

Privacy laws exist throughout Canada, but British Columbia appears to have laws specifically about photography and video. In fact, The Privacy Act specific to the province allows private citizens to sue individuals if they can prove that their privacy has been invaded when they had reasonable expectations of privacy. Surveillance and eavesdropping are also considered violations of the law.

The laws, however, have not been tested when it comes to a celebrity just yet. Canada, by and large, does not have the paparazzi culture that exists in other parts of the world. It’s also impossible to tell how the country’s laws would translate to individuals who are not citizens of the country. For example, it’s hard to say if the regulation would be enforceable on individuals who travel to Canada to photograph the couple. By and large, privacy laws in the province and the overarching federal regulations have been primarily used for organizational data breaches.

Will Harry and Meghan be left alone if they do settle in British Columbia?

While British Columbia does have privacy laws on the books, the Huffington Post notes that they’ve very rarely been challenged, and winning a case would be difficult. Any photos taken in a public space of a public figure would likely be considered fair game, explains Roger McConchie, a Vancouver-based lawyer who spoke with the Huffington Post. Since the royal couple are considered public figures, their privacy is far from a sure thing.

If Markle and Prince Harry were to have their pictures taken in public, like in a park or out to eat, those pictures would likely be considered publishable. Photos that are taken using telephoto lenses of the couple in a home or in a private space, however, are subject to privacy laws, and any publication who chooses to use them could be sued, according to the privacy regulations currently on file.

The BBC suggests that the couple was probably safer from the lens of paparazzi back in the United Kingdom. Paparazzi photos of the couple have not been published since their wedding, although the media firestorm surrounding their movements is part of the reason they stepped away from the royal family, according to reports.

Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Regret Leaving the Royal Family? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

It’s a big step for Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex to leave their life as royals behind, as Harry shared their decision was not made lightly. The couple felt they had no other option for a peaceful life, but will they regret their decision? One royal expert shares why the couple may find the grass isn’t greener on the other side.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are giving up the royal life

After intense media and public scrutiny and the emotional interviews they gave for their documentary, it shouldn’t have been so surprising that Prince Harry and Meghan would announce they wanted to exit the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth worked to iron out the specifics and shared her support of their decision in a statement that noted: “Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.

She continued: “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family. I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life… It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

The Sussexes felt there “was no other option”

The couple are giving up their HRH titles and any public funding as they transition to a life in Canada, a decision Prince Harry called their only option.

During a speech he gave at a London charity dinner, Prince Harry shared: “It brings me great sadness that it has come to this. The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges.

He added: “And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”

Will they regret the decision?

They’ve given up their royal duties and Prince Harry had to give up his military titles, plus they’ll be repaying the taxpayer money used to refurbish their Frogmore Cottage home. There were sacrifices made, but they will keep their own private patronages and associations.

One royal commentator believes that Prince Harry may come to miss the old life he had. Richard Fitzwilliams told Express: “Although the agreement will be reviewed in a year’s time the Sussexes have, in reality, been exiled.”

He continued: “They are, however, among the most famous couples in the world and, as we are already seeing, an intrusive media cannot have enough of them.”

He shared: “Independence has its price! They may have a meteoric rise with top Hollywood celebrities to back them, but they will always be followed by the press. Meghan may be in her element, Harry may prove totally adaptable but he also could miss what he has given up.”

Fitzwilliams further claimed that Prince Harry’s “loss of his military links will “deeply upset Harry.” The expert noted, “Since he can no longer wear uniform, this is something he will feel deeply.”

Jennifer Aniston Guest Hosts (and Roasts) Ellen, Answers Burning Questions with Will Ferrell - TooFab

If there is a bucket list for things to do in Hollywood before you die, Jennifer Aniston just ticked two boxes in less than a week. Fresh off her first SAG Awards win for "The Morning Show," the actress took the reins of her first talk show when she stepped in for Ellen DeGeneres.

While not a stand-up comic, Jen has a natural charm and humor that played perfectly in the format. It certainly helped that her guests were people she's known for a long time, and that one of them is one of the planet's funniest human beings, Will Ferrell.

And while she stood by her promise not to scare follow-up guest Selena Gomez as Ellen has done countless times, Jen did take advantage of being on the Warner Brothers lot to make her way to the "Friends" set -- still standing as part of the studio tour -- and scare the bejezus out of people there.

Making the moment even funnier was the fact that the person setting the tour goers up for a photo on the Central Perk couch kept asking them to name off their favorite character from "Friends" ... and no one, we mean no one said Rachel.

Countless times, as the picture was being taken, Jen would pop out from behind the couch lamenting that their favorite character was Joey or Ross!

Our favorite reactions, though, came from two different pairs of women. One woman simply screamed and could not stop, staring at Jen in a shock so real if she hadn't been screaming, we're not sure she'd have been breathing.

The other pair of women had such a subdued reaction, Jen actually retreated briefly back down behind the couch. But they were just processing their shock differently, and it finally manifested in a series of questions.

"Am I dreaming? Is it really you? Is there a mask on? Are you real? So you really film here?" she was asked breathlessly.

"I live here," Jen replied.

Ellen's Darkest Secrets

Jen and Ellen have been friends for a long time, so it was perhaps no surprise that she followed the tradition of many guest hosts in trashing Ellen while she was away.

But Jennifer had some of the juiciest (and funniest) morsels of non-truth about the show's regular host. She revealed Ellen's real name -- "Look it up" -- how she's on the run from the law, apparently loves Gwyneth Paltrow's latest candle scene, and apparently throws pennies away. "She throws them right into the garbage in front of people," Jen said.

But the biggest surprise is that Ellen has another movie project you may not have heard of. "She once voiced an animated adult film called ‘Grinding Nemo,'" Jen said, adding with a wink, "It’s hard to find, but you know how to find it."

Burning Questions with Will Ferrell

Will was put on the hot seat, but luckily Jen was right there next to them as they both tried to tackle Ellen's toughest "Burning Questions." For example, did you know that Will feels sexy when he puts on his referee outfit.

The answer was a callback to an earlier chat where Will revealed the soccer league he's involved in with his kids requires parents to volunteer, and so he'd find himself standing in as a referee, complete with socks up to his knees and a bright shirt.

But what made it challenging was that he's so recognizable among the younger set for one particular project. "I usually get through half a game before one of the kids on an opposing team is like, ‘Are you the Elf? What are you doing here?’" he said.

"That's an advantage," Jen noted quickly, as all the kids on his son's team already know him, so there's no distractions for them.

"It's all tactical," Will agreed.

As expected, Will riffed through most of those "Burning Questions," coming up with some ridiculous and hilarious answers, but he was stunned into silence when he was asked the first person he kissed. "What was her name?" He mused. "It was ... Abby ... Gabby!" But even then, he wasn't sure.

Jen called him on it later when asked to name his first celebrity crush. "Don't say Gabby Abby," she shot at him. But he gave his real answer here (or answers, as he had two), noting the blank looks on the audience's faces as they clearly aren't familiar with either "Happy Days" or "Eight Is Enough."

Jen went with Shaun Cassidy, and the audience had no problem getting on board with that one.

Another highlight came when they were asked to reveal the weirdest rumor they'd ever heard about themselves. "That I died in a hang gliding accident," Will said. But it wasn't a joke. As for Jen? "I don't have time for this."

Also worth the price of admission is their lengthy explanation as to why they agreed that scuba diving was the one thing they'd both tried and would never do again. "We're not supposed to be down there. It's their world, not ours," Will said.

First Impressions with Will and Selena

Both Will and Jen remember when they first met, as it was during the "Friends"-ied heights of her early career and his career-building breakout turn on "Saturday Night Live."

"I remember being very nervous to meet you and you were so nice to our cast," Will told her. "I had grown my hair out and cut it in a Rachel. You were like, ‘That does not look good on a man.’ But you told me gently."

Still laughing constantly, Jen said that's what she remembered most about Will from her time hosting the show back in 1999. "You always made me break, and you always broke. And I don’t know if you did that to make me break or--"

In her pause, Will offered an explanation. "No, I'm just a bad actor."

Later, it was a mutual admiration society between Jen and Selena Gomez, celebrating the best critical acclaim of her career and her number one album "Rare."

While the women have actually known each other for years now, and Selena has even been to Jen's house, it was only Selena who remembered the very first time they met.

Well actually, it might count as more of a celebrity encounter, as Selena was not yet famous. But it was still a huge deal for the unabashed "Friends" superfan.

"Nobody knew who I was and you were in the bathroom wearing a black dress," she told Jen, showing just how much this moment had imprinted on her. "I think we were at a Vanity Fair or something event."

It was an innocent enough experience, as Selena went into the bathroom and shared the space briefly with the actress before Jen left. No words were exchanged, but Selena said Jen was still "perfect." Jen just hoped she'd washed her hands.

"My heart stopped and I ran to my mom, I was like, 'Oh my god, I just saw Jennifer Aniston,'" Selena recalled.

It was sort of the same reaction -- only far less animated -- of many of the people from that Central Perk set. Jen had actually invited them to the show, with all of them perched above the set in a special Starbucks Starbox.

In fact, before the interview even began, Selena turned to them with some choice words for none of them choosing Jen as their favorite. "First off, are you guys kidding me?!" she shouted up to them. "Rachel was my life!"

First reactions praise Taylor Swift documentary 'Miss Americana' as 'illuminating, empowering' - USA TODAY

Taylor Swift and director Lana Wilson received a rousing standing ovation onstage following the world premiere of their new documentary "Miss Americana," which opened the Sundance Film Festival Thursday night.

The Netflix-look behind the scenes of the popstar's life (available on streaming and select theaters Jan. 31) has already set off a social media frenzy, fueled further by Swift's candid revelations on body image issues and struggles to overcome an eating disorder.

Based on the early social media reaction, the assembled world's film media was impressed with the film and emotional insight.

"As someone who’s covered Taylor Swift’s music and career for news over the past decade, I found #MissAmericana to be a compelling snapshot," tweeted Piya Sinha-Roy, senior film editor for The Hollywood Reporter.

Sinha-Roy noted that big issues such as Swift's feud with former manager Scooter Braun are covered in the film, that "doesn’t address everything...but she’s taking charge of her narrative. Gotta respect that."

Leah Greenblatt, an EW critic, was surprised with the impact.

"Maybe not the most expected start to #Sundance2020 but the Taylor Swift doc #MissAmericana is smart and funny and intimate and feels like the kind of insight you actually want into a superstar," Greenblatt tweeted.

Ramin Setoodeh, Variety's New York bureau chief, tweeted "#MissAmericana is an illuminating, empowering portrait of Taylor Swift at a turning point in her career, a meditation on the loneliness of fame, and a study on why women — even very famous women — aren’t treated the same as men. #Sundance2020"

Leigh Blickley, senior, entertainment reporter with the Huffington Post, called the documentary "funny, sad and poignant" adding she "loved it."

Adam Chitwood, deputy editor for the entertainment site Collider, called the documentary "a fascinating and candid story of how an insanely famous artist who was trained to be nice and inoffensive reconciles her growth as a political and feminist human being in the public eye."

Kevin Fallon, senior entertainment reporter at the Daily Beast, went straight to the point. "I really liked #MissAmericana," he tweeted. "Taylor finally says her piece. It’s gratifying to watch. It’s fun, too."

Recording Academy Issues Blistering Statement in Wake of Deborah Dugan Allegations - Hollywood Reporter

The group is calling on the organization's board of trustees to implement "systemic changes."

With multiple allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination leveled by Recording Academy president and CEO Deborah Dugan this week sending shock waves through the industry, the Recording Academy Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion on Thursday issued a scathing statement calling on the organization’s board of trustees to step up.

"As representatives from across the music community serving on the Recording Academy Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion, we want to speak in our own voice about our shock and dismay at the allegations surrounding the Recording Academy and its leadership that surfaced this week," the statement begins. The task force goes on to urge the trustees to implement all 18 "systemic changes" outlined in the 47-page report it issued in December, with the goal of improving diversity and inclusion at the academy and across the industry.

The charges by Dugan, the statement continues, "reinforce just how important and urgent it is that the Academy implement all of the changes in the report that we delivered — without any delay." The statement goes on to highlight several of the proposed recommendations, including more diverse academy committees, with equal numbers of women and men; implementing ranked-choice voting for the "Big Four" Grammy categories; changing the board of trustees election system to make it more diverse and inclusive; hiring a dedicated diversity and inclusion officer at the executive level; and hiring an independent outside advisor to ensure the academy has a "compliant and inclusive workplace culture."

"The Academy's Board of Trustees and leadership must immediately commit themselves to real reform, take concrete steps to implement all of the Task Force reforms, and transparently and regularly report on their progress — including transparently reporting on the pending investigations they have announced are underway," it reads, noting it expects to hear progress from the academy when the task force reconvenes in 90 days’ time.

Chaired by Time's Up president and CEO Tina Tchen, the Recording Academy Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion is composed of Universal Music Group Nashville's Stephanie Alexa; Universal Music Group's Michele Anthony; songwriter-producer Shakari Boles; country singer Cam; rapper Common; singer Andra Day; TV journalist Giselle Fernandez; songwriter, producer and artist Jimmy Jam; Creative Nation CEO Beth Laird; BET chairwoman Debra Lee; Lionfish CEO Rebeca Leon; ASCAP CEO Elisabeth Matthews; USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative founder and director Dr. Stacy Smith; Friends at Work founder and CEO Ty Stiklorius; Sony Music's Julie Swidler; Seven20 CEO Dean Wilson; and Women's Audio Mission executive director Terri Winston.

Read the full statement below.

As representatives from across the music community serving on the Recording Academy Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion, we want to speak in our own voice about our shock and dismay at the allegations surrounding the Recording Academy and its leadership that surfaced this week.

Our Task Force devoted the last year and a half to determining ways of making this industry we love more inclusive and representative of all of our voices. On December 12, 2019, we issued a 47-page report, setting out 18 systemic changes we determined were needed to improve diversity and inclusion at the Academy, and drive constructive change across the music industry.

These new charges reinforce just how important and urgent it is that the Academy implement all of the changes in the report that we delivered — without any delay.

The Academy's Board of Trustees and leadership must immediately commit themselves to real reform, take concrete steps to implement all of the Task Force reforms, and transparently and regularly report on their progress — including transparently reporting on the pending investigations they have announced are underway. The Task Force will be reconvening in 90 days and expects to hear progress from the Academy by that time.

To reiterate, among the recommendations outlined in our report are calls for:

• Ensuring that all committees of the Academy, including nominations committees, are diverse, with equal representation of men and women — an area where progress achieved last year was eroded in this year’s appointments;

Implementing ranked-choice voting at both the nominating committee and final ballot stages for the Big Four award categories (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist), which we believe would be a more fair and representative way to decide among a large group of nominees;

Changing the Board of Trustees election system so that the leadership of the Academy will be more diverse and inclusive. While the Academy announced a partial implementation of our recommendation last month, it does not go far enough;

Hiring a dedicated Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the executive level to lead the deeper changes that are obviously needed; and

Hiring an independent outside advisor to conduct a review of all policies to ensure the Academy has a compliant and inclusive workplace culture.

To be clear, these are changes that need to be made at the highest levels and institutionalized so that they outlast any single leader.

While we understand there are ongoing investigations about the issues raised over the last week, our experience and research tells us that if the Academy leadership, its staff, and the nominating committees that govern the Awards were more diverse and inclusive, there would be better processes for resolving problems and more trust in the Academy as a whole. Those seeking to make such reforms need to be supported, not impeded.

Change is hard. It won't be easy to make these changes. But we are deeply disappointed at the level of commitment by some of the Academy's leadership in effecting the kind of real and constructive change presented in our report. We are confident that they can do better.

Music has historically catalyzed and galvanized mass social change. And so it must again. Now.

'Star Trek: Picard' slowly goes where the franchise has gone before - CNN

Patrick Stewart is back, 33 years after "Star Trek: The Next Generation" launched, and 18 years since last suiting up for a "Trek" movie as Jean-Luc Picard, the eloquent captain of the Enterprise. He's obviously a bit more sedentary (Stewart is now 79) and less a man of action, but the poetry in those elegant line readings still lingers.
Unlike the old series, though, "Picard" -- developed by novelist Michael Chabon, part of a producing team that includes "Star Trek: Discovery's" Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman -- is a heavily serialized, densely plotted affair, one that only finally begins taking shape after the third episode.
The sluggish pace thus begins to drain interest, at least for those who didn't hang on "Next Generation's" every wrinkle. That leaves the prospect of upcoming "Next Generation" cameos ("special guest stars," as they're billed) as perhaps the best incentive to stay aboard, as opposed to where the story's ultimately heading.
At least initially, this feels like a different "Star Trek" iteration, with Picard having resigned from Starfleet, and taken up residence -- a bit restlessly -- at a serene vineyard in France. (Much of the early action takes place on Earth, and the shimmering glimpses of the planet's future are hopeful, even by "Trek" standards.)
Soon, however, Picard is drawn into a rather elaborate mystery, one that involves some old intergalactic friends -- and foes. Backed up by a pair of Romulans (Orla Brady, Jamie McShane) who live at the vineyard, and an adorable dog named Number One, he gradually decides he'll need allies to find out what's happening, deciphering the mystery of a young woman (Isa Briones) who comes into his orbit.
It's best not to spoil the exact nature of why she's special, but the plot provides the wistful Picard with a personal connection. Eventually, the story brings together a cast that includes Alison Pill, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, and Evan Evagora.
A scene from 'Star Trek: Discovery.'
Recognizing the power of avid fan bases in navigating the streaming universe, CBS All Access has heavily relied upon "Star Trek" to try reeling in subscribers, having launched on the back of "Discovery" in 2017. In some respects "Picard" is a lower-key, less traditional show, but it has the advantage of constructing the narrative around a beloved character, however convoluted it might be.
Mirroring the show, CBS is clearly playing a longer game, renewing the series for a second season in advance of the premiere. That could be seen as an act of faith, but it's also an acknowledgement that the title and talent alone are, for the purposes of streaming, half the battle.
Picard is told, at one point, to "be the captain they remember," a line that speaks as much to the rationale for the program as it does to the character. But just wishing isn't enough, as Picard was fond of saying, to make it so.
"Star Trek: Picard" premieres Jan. 23 on CBS All Access.
