Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, January 5. All times are Eastern.

Top picks

Golden Globes Arrival Special (NBC, 7 p.m.) and The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards (NBC, 8 p.m.): There are a lot of questionable things about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—their taste, for one—but it cannot be denied that they seem to throw a good party.

Who’ll bring their drink on stage with them this year? Tune in, join us for our liveblog, then look for more coverage tomorrow morning. Oh, and while we typically don’t include red carpet coverage in our top picks, Billy Porter is rightfully nominated for Pose and last year, he wore this, so yeah, we’re thinking we’ll watch.

Regular coverage

The Simpsons (Fox, 8 p.m.)
Doctor Who (BBC America, 8 p.m.)
Shameless (Showtime, 9 p.m.)
The L Word: Generation Q (Showtime, 10 p.m.)
Dracula (Netflix, ongoing)

Wild card

Work In Progress (Showtime, 11 p.m.): We’re well past due for a check-in with this terrific Showtime series. Abby’s almond count is decreasing swiftly and the end of the last episode was pretty gripping. Bring on the remarkable tonal balance, the great acting, and the therapist lock-screen.

Margot Robbie and Kit Harington announced as presenters for upcoming Golden Globes

Margot Robbie and Kit Harington have been added to the announced list of presenters at this year’s Golden Globes

The annual awards ceremony is set to take place on Sunday in Los Angeles with Ricky Gervais taking on the role as show host for the fifth time.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association confirmed the names of several others stars who will also be presenting awards during the night, in a release on Friday.

Look lovely in lilac like Margot wearing Giambattista Valli

Margot Robbie never fails to impress Fashion Finder HQ, but for the Bombshell premiere in LA, she really made our jaws drop.

Everything from the make-up to the dress to the hair made this the actress’s best look to date. Stylist Kate Young dressed Margot in a couture gown by Giambattista Valli which is elegantly crafted from lilac chiffon that drapes the figure.

To keep in tune with the trends of yesteryear, the designer has featured a bubble hem and floral detailing on the empire waistline.

We seriously wish we could buy this dress, but the look-alikes in the carousel below will have to suffice. Make a statement like Margot in a high-street alternative by Boohoo and Goddiva or go a little more high-end with a dress by True Decadence.

Meanwhile, the HFPA have revealed the menu for this year’s event will be completely plant-based, in order to raise environmental awareness about food consumption and waste.

Leonardo DiCaprio tweet in support of the HFPA's plant-based menu.

The Titanic actor, who has long campaigned on environmental issues despite receiving criticism for private jet usage, praised the move on Twitter on Thursday.

The organisation has also partnered with Icelandic Glacial to eliminate single-use plastic and utilize glass water bottles.

Leaving Neverland: Court rules accusers can sue Michael Jackson companies - BBC News

Two men who featured in a documentary alleging sexual abuse by the singer Michael Jackson can pursue legal claims against two of his companies, a court has ruled.

Wade Robson and James Safechuck claim they were abused by the singer in the late 80s and early 90s while staying at his Neverland ranch.

Jackson died in 2009 but his family have denied the claims.

They described the documentary Leaving Neverland as a "public lynching".

A lower court had dismissed lawsuits brought by the two men in 2014 because California's statute of limitations required that claims of childhood sexual abuse be filed before an accuser's 26th birthday.

However a new law, which came into effect on 1 January, extends the timeframe up to a person's 40th birthday.

Both Mr Robson and Mr Safechuck claim they were abused by Jackson from the ages of seven and 10.

Vince Finaldi, the lawyer for the two men, said in a statement following the ruling: "We are pleased that the Court has recognised the strong protections California has put into place for sexual abuse victims under the state's new law extending the statute of limitations."

Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for Jackson's estate, said: "The Court of Appeal's ruling merely revived lawsuits against Michael Jackson's companies, which absurdly claim that Michael's employees are somehow responsible for sexual abuse that never happened."

5 Ways 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' and 'Avengers: Endgame' are the Same Movie - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Notice anything familiar about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker?

In 2019, Disney released the epic conclusion of one of its most beloved properties. Paying off years of storytelling and featuring a sprawling ensemble cast, this film ended an era and opened up a whole new shared universe of possibilities. Along the way, the studio delivered one of the year’s biggest box office hits. Okay, two of the year’s biggest hits.

Both Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker present eerily similar turning points for their respective franchises. But the films are actually much more alike than their core audiences even realize. Here are just a few ways in which the latest Avengers and Star Wars films are, in fact, the very same movie.

[Spoiler alert: This article contains MAJOR spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Read at your own risk.]

A dead villain’s surprising return

In both films, the heroes face off against a hero they thought they had defeated. Avengers: Endgame shockingly offs Thanos (Josh Brolin) in the first 20 minutes, only for the Mad Titan to return via time travel by the third act. True, this is a very different version of the villain, but our point stands.

In The Rise of Skywalker, “the dead speak!” Thanks to the opening crawl, we learn in the film’s first seconds that Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) lives on. How exactly he survived is never truly explained, though it clearly involves the dark side of the Force. We don’t get a fully-powered Palpatine until the final battle, also much like Avengers: Endgame.

Intertwined fates for its leads

Just as the Star Wars sequel trilogy hinges on the fates of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Avengers: Endgame is the story of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these two have been the overarching co-leads. So it stands to reason their stories would meet an end in Avengers: Endgame.

In that superhero epic, Iron Man sacrifices himself to defeat Thanos, while Captain America retires to settle down with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Likewise, Kylo Ren — really Ben Solo by that point — gives his life to revive Rey. She, in turn, visits the Lars Homestead on Tattooine, constructs her own lightsaber, and assumes the Skywalker family name.

A surprise rescue transmission

Now we’re getting to the really crazy connections between Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In both films, our heroes are insanely outnumbered by the resurrected villains’ forces. Yet, just when Captain America and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), respectively, believe they’re making their last stand, the cavalry rolls in.

In Avengers: Endgame, Falcon (Anthony Mackie) delivers the satisfying “on your left” callback, prompting a sea of portals to reveal the returned heroes. In essentially the same move, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) come through with a last-minute save, joined by countless Resistance allies. Did Disney just copy itself to secure a crowd-pleasing climax? You decide.

Climactic one-liners

Every hero wants to get the last word in, none more than Tony Stark. But right before that fateful snap dusts away Thanos, Tony and his purple nemesis exchange these words. “I am inevitable,” Thanos says. When he’s shocked to see the Infinity Stones are gone, Tony reveals he has them. In between gasps, he says those immortal words, “I… am… Iron Man.”

In nearly identical fashion, Palpatine proclaims victory over Rey in The Rise of Skywalker. Zapping away, he unleashes the full power of the dark side in a barrage of lightning. “I am all the Sith!” he says triumphantly. Rey, with the power of past Jedi on her side, replies, “And I… am all the Jedi!” Both scenes work in context, but they are still too similar for our taste.

A not-so-definitive ending

Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker both provide endings to their respective stories. But even as they end the Infinity and Skywalker sagas, these two films set up a ton of possibilities that might follow. In the case of Avengers: Endgame, we already know Disney+ will continue the stories of several key heroes. Oh, and Loki.

With Star Wars, we have some Disney+ content as well. But those shows are set long before The Rise of Skywalker. Fans still have no clue what will happen next or if we’ll ever get more of the sequel trilogy’s main characters. Yet, we’ll bet we haven’t seen the last of Zorii Bliss (Keri Russell) and Jannah (Naomi Ackie). In the latter’s case, Lucasfilm has a spinoff if they want it.
