Producer behind 'Charlie Brown Christmas' dies on Christmas Day - Fox Business

Lee Mendelson, the producer who changed the face of the holidays when he brought “A Charlie Brown Christmas” to television in 1965 and wrote the lyrics to its signature song, “Christmas Time Is Here,” died on Christmas day, his son said.

Mendelson, who won a dozen Emmys in his long career, died at his home in Hillsborough, California, of congestive heart failure at age 86 after a long struggle with lung cancer, son Jason Mendelson told The Associated Press.

Lee Mendelson headed a team that included “Peanuts” author Charles Schulz, director Bill Melendez, and pianist and composer Vince Guaraldi, whose music for the show, including the opening “Christmas Time Is Here,” has become as much a Christmas staple as the show itself.

Mendelson told The Cincinnati Enquirer in 2000 that he was short on time in finding a lyricist for the song, so he sketched out the six verses himself in "about 15 minutes on the backside of an envelope."

He found a choir from a church in his native Northern California to sing the song that sets the show's unforgettable tone, beginning with Mendelson's words:

“Christmas time is here, happiness and cheer, fun for all that children call, their favorite time of year.”

The show won an Emmy and a Peabody Award and has aired on TV annually ever since. The team that made it would go on to create more than 50 network specials, four feature films and many other “Peanuts” projects.

Mendelson also took other comic strips from newspapers to animated TV, including “Garfield,” for which he produced a dozen television specials.

His death was first reported by The Daily Post of Palo Alto.

Born in San Francisco in 1933, Mendelson's family moved to nearby San Mateo when he was a boy, and later to nearby Hillsborough, where he went to high school.

He graduated from Stanford in 1954, served in the Air Force and worked for his father's fruit-and-vegetable company before going into TV for the Bay Area's KPIX-TV.

In 1963 he started his own production company and made a documentary on San Francisco Giants legend Willie Mays, “A Man Named Mays,” that became a hit television special on NBC.

Mendelson liked to say that he decided to turn from the world's greatest baseball player to the world's worst: Charlie Brown.

He and Schulz originally worked on a “Peanuts” documentary that proved a hard sell for TV, but midway through 1965, a sponsor asked them if they could create the first comic strip's first animated special in time for Christmas.

Schulz wrote the now-familiar story of a depressed Charlie Brown seeking the meaning of Christmas, a school Christmas play with intractable actors including his dog Snoopy, a limp and unappreciated Christmas tree, and a recitation of the nativity story from his best friend Linus.

“It became part of everybody’s Christmas holidays. It was just passed on from generation to generation. ... We got this huge initial audience and never lost them.”

- Lee Mendelson

Mendelson hired Guaraldi to provide the music after hearing the jazz artist's song “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” while driving across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Mendelson said the team showed the special to executives at CBS a week before it was slated to air, and they hated it, with its hyper-simplicity, dour tone, biblical themes, lack of laugh track and actual children's voices instead of adults mimicking them, as was common.

“I really believed, if it hadn't been scheduled for the following week, there's no way they were gonna broadcast that show,” Mendelson said on a 2004 documentary for the DVD of the special.

Instead, it went on to become perhaps the biggest holiday classic in television.

“It became part of everybody’s Christmas holidays,” Mendelson told The Los Angeles Times in 2015. “It was just passed on from generation to generation. ... We got this huge initial audience and never lost them.”

Mendelson is survived by his wife, Ploenta, his children Lynda, Glenn, Jason and Sean, his stepson Ken and eight grandchildren.

Why 2020 Won't Be a Better Year for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married, the whole world seemed as smitten with the couple as they were with each other. It’s a fairy tale story when a member of the royal family marries a “commoner.” And it seems like an actress from America couldn’t be any more different from royalty.

But it didn’t take long for the public to start picking at the beautiful couple, and what began as a fairy tale soon became a bitter story for them. What went wrong, and can they look forward to turning things around in 2020?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had a beautiful beginning to 2019

In many ways, 2019 seems like a wonderful year for Prince Harry and Markle.

In May, a year after their wedding, they welcomed their first baby, a beautiful son named Archie. They were both clearly besotted with their little boy, and it seemed as though things were perfect for the little family.

They had plenty of other triumphs in the year also. They went on a tour of Africa that meant a great deal to them. Not only were they able to highlight a number of charities that are dear to their hearts, but they also honored the memory of the late Princess Diana.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also launched their own charitable foundation. There seemed to be plenty of positive events in their life.

The public opinion started to turn on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Shortly after the birth of Archie, the couple moved out of Kensington Palace and into Frogmore Cottage. Soon rumors began to circulate that the reason for the move was that there was a falling out between Prince Harry and Prince William — perhaps over Prince William’s feelings that the couple rushed into marriage.

Whether it was a fair assessment or not, people blamed Duchess Meghan for the estrangement between the brothers. Soon the press was relentlessly criticizing the couple, especially Markle.

They claimed the Duchess of Sussex treated the staff rudely and pointed out every tiny detail they could find that seemed to show she was not royal enough. She was even mocked for how she held Baby Archie.

When a tabloid used shady tactics to get their hands on a letter she wrote to her estranged father, Prince Harry had enough. He sued the tabloid and wrote a blistering statement about the underhanded behavior of the tabloids.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry try to defend themselves

During an interview for a documentary about their Africa trip, Markle made an emotional statement about how hard it was to be a new mom and face lots of criticism. Although many people empathized with her, especially mothers, it didn’t do much to bolster her image as a dignified member of the royal family.

The couple decided to take a break from all the drama and go to the U.S. for some respite. This has spawned a whole new crop of rumors that they are considering resigning from their royal duties and leaving England for good.

They haven’t made any statements responding to these rumors, but they do seem to be trying to protect their privacy a little more. They’ve recently changed their Instagram settings to prevent fans from tagging them in photos, so they don’t show up on their account.

Royal watchers wonder if their new cautious attitude is too little, too late. With the scandals that have rocked the royal family recently, everyone will have to do extra work to keep their image burnished.

With the somewhat erratic behavior of Prince Harry and Markle, people wonder if they will be able to step up and do what the Queen asks of them. If Prince Harry and Markle aren’t able to learn from the past year and be a little more careful in 2020, things might not get any easier any time soon.

‘Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker’ Running B.O. To Beat ‘Last Jedi’ This Weekend — Thursday AM Update - Deadline

Another big day for Disney’s Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker with a Dec. 26 estimated gross of $30.7M, -4% from Christmas Day. Industry sources are forecasting that through the ninth-quel’s first ten days by Sunday, the J.J. Abrams directed movie will hit $380.9M, pacing 3% ahead of Last Jedi at the same point in time. Pretty impressive for a pic we dinged for having a slow start. Skywalker‘s Dec. 26 bests that of Last Jedi‘s ($27.7M) and is just under Rogue One‘s $32M, which was on the Monday after a Christmas Sunday.

Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Eliza Scanlen and Florence Pugh in 'Little Women'

Sony’s Little Women is doing great with a $6M Thursday, -6% from Christmas, on its way to a $27.8M 5-day. The Greta Gerwig-directed reboot of the Louisa May Alcott novel scored 5 stars on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak among both general audiences and parents (but kids under 12 were sleepy at 2 1/2 stars). General audiences made up 83% of Little Women‘s audience with 17% families. Females over 25 led the charge making up close to 50%, with men over 25 at 30%, females under 25 at 13% (who gave the pic a perfect score of 100%) and men under 25 at 9%. Diversity breakdown was 73% Caucasian, 15% Asian/Other, 7% Hispanic and 5% African American. Little Women played best on the coasts. As expected, Little Women is stealing females away from Cats which is expected to end its 10-day run on Sunday with $18.1M, 53% behind The Greatest Showman at the same point in time.

Fox/Disney/Blue Sky’s Spies in Disguise earned an A- CinemaScore, and 3 1/2 stars from general audiences and parents and 4 stars from kids under 12. Industry estimates are $4.1M yesterday, -15%. Business is being driven by 62% males, with an audience that is 70% under 35 with 50% between 18-35 years old. Diversity demos were 42% Caucasian, 29% Asian/Other, 16% African American and 13% Hispanic. The Blue Sky movie performed the best in the South and the West.

A24’s Uncut Gems posted $3.3M at 2,341, -44% from Christmas Day for a running total of $10.4M. The pic is racking up solid business, despite its C+ CinemaScore and 2 stars on PostTrak. Why those low scores? It depends on how you view the shocking ending. Males at 65% showed up with 67% under 35 with the largest quad being between 18-24 at 35%. Diversity demos were 65% Caucasian, 12% Asian/Other, 12% African American and 11% Hispanic. The Safdie Brothers movie played best on the coasts, however, much better in the East I hear.

Lionsgate/MRC’s Knives Out passed the century mark yesterday.

Universal/DreamWorks’ 1917  made an estimated $187K yesterday for a 2-day gross of $438K. Warner Bros.’ Just Mercy posted $37K last night, -54% for a 2 day take of $118K.

North Carolina man's 'Family Feud' proposal to girlfriend goes viral - Fox News

Survey says: Will you marry me?

A North Carolina man’s now-viral proposal to his girlfriend took a page from the popular TV game show “Family Feud.”

In a Facebook video posted on Monday, the man, identified by Fox 8 as Joshua Bell, asked his girlfriend Kiana Myrick a series of marriage-themed questions in Family Feud format.

BRIDE-TO-BE PURPOSELY RUINS FUTURE BROTHER-IN-LAW'S MARRIAGE PROPOSAL TO KEEP WEDDING SPOTLIGHT

“We surveyed a hundred women,” Bell said, standing behind Myrick as she prepared to play what she thought was just a normal game with the family.

“Name a day a woman always dreams of,” he said, to which Myrick quickly answered: “Her wedding day!”

Bell continued down his rapid-fire questions, all relating to weddings such as “name something a woman wears all white to.”

Suddenly, the family game night took a turn as Bell asked, “How would you finish this: Will you marry me?”

Myrick, apparently a bit confused, slightly turned around to look back at him.

“Yes, I will?” she said skeptically.

Bell then followed up with “you might as well make it official, right,” before getting on one knee to officially pop the question.

Myrick’s jaw drops and is visibly shocked by the surprise proposal as her family gleefully celebrates.

“I love you with all of my heart,” Bell said, as Myrick wipes away tears of joy. “A lot of people may say we are young, but I say life is too short.

“Through everything we’ve been through, baby, we managed to keep God first. And now eight years later, we’re here –I’m looking for 88 more,” he added. “Will you marry me?”

Jerry Herman death: The beloved Broadway composer was 88 - CNN

"Jerry gave us such joy through his music," goddaughter Jane Dorian said in a statement to CNN. "He was the poet laureate of our time and gave so many extraordinary songs. He touched our hearts and souls with his music and we will miss him deeply."
The musicals Herman scored, like the protagonists they starred, were all anchored by a buoyant optimism and a timeless quality even he admitted was uncommon toward the end of his nearly 40-year career. But his songs have since become standards.
"He was so insightful and perceptive," Dorian told CNN. "He really captured the soul and spirit of who we are as Americans."
Many of his most notable musicals centered around charismatic women, like "Hello, Dolly!" "Mame" and "Mack & Mabel," which starred Broadway titans Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters, respectively.
But with "La Cage aux Folles" in 1983, Herman quietly broke ground on Broadway with his portrait of a gay couple who ran a drag nightclub whose relationship woes and triumphs resembled that of any heterosexual couple portrayed on stage. It was a certifiable hit, running for 1,761 performances.
"When they passed out talent, Jerry stood in line twice," Channing, who died earlier this year at 97, once said of Herman.
His work earned him four Tony Awards, including a Special Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. In 2010, his work was celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors alongside Oprah Winfrey and Sir Paul McCartney.
"I'm certainly aware of how different popular music is today from when I started in this business, and I realize that my songwriting is not generally in fashion," he told the New York Times in 1985. "But 'La Cage' made me feel secure about going on and just being what I am, and writing simple, hummable tunes."
He largely retired from composing in the 2000s, though he lent his name to awards for high school musical theatre departments in Los Angeles County.

A self-taught musician who nailed the human condition

Herman devoted himself to the stage after his parents took him to see a production of "Annie Get Your Gun" in the late 1940s. He loved it so much he taught himself to play the piano.
Dorian, whose mother befriended Herman when the two studied at the University of Miami, said Herman was rejected from musical schools a number of times -- not because he was untalented, but because, the auditioners told him, if they trained him, he'd "ruin his talent."
So Herman continued to hone his own talent, writing revues of his songs before he cemented his star with "Hello, Dolly!" in 1964.
That show, and many shows that followed, explore the relationships and inner workings of older leads and much younger supporting characters. It's a skill -- understanding how love transforms with age -- in his songwriting that's grown on Dorian as she's matured.
"I've always found that the more I listen to his lyrics at different stages of my life, they take on different meanings," she said. "He's always spot-on about life, no matter what stage of life. The simplicity of his lyrics can be incredibly powerful."
But beyond his work onstage, he was a second father and best friend to Dorian throughout her life. She remembered an evening when Herman ducked behind a bar in his home during a meeting with legendary producer David Merrick so he could help her with her English homework.
He lived with the same optimism and joy, plus a dash of "devilish humor," that made his music and lyrics so widely beloved, she said.
"It's not often you get to choose your family," she said. "He was just my heart."
