‘Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker’ Running B.O. To Beat ‘Last Jedi’ This Weekend — Thursday AM Update - Deadline

Another big day for Disney’s Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker with a Dec. 26 estimated gross of $30.7M, -4% from Christmas Day. Industry sources are forecasting that through the ninth-quel’s first ten days by Sunday, the J.J. Abrams directed movie will hit $380.9M, pacing 3% ahead of Last Jedi at the same point in time. Pretty impressive for a pic we dinged for having a slow start. Skywalker‘s Dec. 26 bests that of Last Jedi‘s ($27.7M) and is just under Rogue One‘s $32M, which was on the Monday after a Christmas Sunday.

Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Eliza Scanlen and Florence Pugh in 'Little Women'

Sony’s Little Women is doing great with a $6M Thursday, -6% from Christmas, on its way to a $27.8M 5-day. The Greta Gerwig-directed reboot of the Louisa May Alcott novel scored 5 stars on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak among both general audiences and parents (but kids under 12 were sleepy at 2 1/2 stars). General audiences made up 83% of Little Women‘s audience with 17% families. Females over 25 led the charge making up close to 50%, with men over 25 at 30%, females under 25 at 13% (who gave the pic a perfect score of 100%) and men under 25 at 9%. Diversity breakdown was 73% Caucasian, 15% Asian/Other, 7% Hispanic and 5% African American. Little Women played best on the coasts. As expected, Little Women is stealing females away from Cats which is expected to end its 10-day run on Sunday with $18.1M, 53% behind The Greatest Showman at the same point in time.

Fox/Disney/Blue Sky’s Spies in Disguise earned an A- CinemaScore, and 3 1/2 stars from general audiences and parents and 4 stars from kids under 12. Industry estimates are $4.1M yesterday, -15%. Business is being driven by 62% males, with an audience that is 70% under 35 with 50% between 18-35 years old. Diversity demos were 42% Caucasian, 29% Asian/Other, 16% African American and 13% Hispanic. The Blue Sky movie performed the best in the South and the West.

A24’s Uncut Gems posted $3.3M at 2,341, -44% from Christmas Day for a running total of $10.4M. The pic is racking up solid business, despite its C+ CinemaScore and 2 stars on PostTrak. Why those low scores? It depends on how you view the shocking ending. Males at 65% showed up with 67% under 35 with the largest quad being between 18-24 at 35%. Diversity demos were 65% Caucasian, 12% Asian/Other, 12% African American and 11% Hispanic. The Safdie Brothers movie played best on the coasts, however, much better in the East I hear.

Lionsgate/MRC’s Knives Out passed the century mark yesterday.

Universal/DreamWorks’ 1917  made an estimated $187K yesterday for a 2-day gross of $438K. Warner Bros.’ Just Mercy posted $37K last night, -54% for a 2 day take of $118K.

North Carolina man's 'Family Feud' proposal to girlfriend goes viral - Fox News

Survey says: Will you marry me?

A North Carolina man’s now-viral proposal to his girlfriend took a page from the popular TV game show “Family Feud.”

In a Facebook video posted on Monday, the man, identified by Fox 8 as Joshua Bell, asked his girlfriend Kiana Myrick a series of marriage-themed questions in Family Feud format.

BRIDE-TO-BE PURPOSELY RUINS FUTURE BROTHER-IN-LAW'S MARRIAGE PROPOSAL TO KEEP WEDDING SPOTLIGHT

“We surveyed a hundred women,” Bell said, standing behind Myrick as she prepared to play what she thought was just a normal game with the family.

“Name a day a woman always dreams of,” he said, to which Myrick quickly answered: “Her wedding day!”

Bell continued down his rapid-fire questions, all relating to weddings such as “name something a woman wears all white to.”

Suddenly, the family game night took a turn as Bell asked, “How would you finish this: Will you marry me?”

Myrick, apparently a bit confused, slightly turned around to look back at him.

“Yes, I will?” she said skeptically.

Bell then followed up with “you might as well make it official, right,” before getting on one knee to officially pop the question.

Myrick’s jaw drops and is visibly shocked by the surprise proposal as her family gleefully celebrates.

“I love you with all of my heart,” Bell said, as Myrick wipes away tears of joy. “A lot of people may say we are young, but I say life is too short.

“Through everything we’ve been through, baby, we managed to keep God first. And now eight years later, we’re here –I’m looking for 88 more,” he added. “Will you marry me?”

Jerry Herman death: The beloved Broadway composer was 88 - CNN

"Jerry gave us such joy through his music," goddaughter Jane Dorian said in a statement to CNN. "He was the poet laureate of our time and gave so many extraordinary songs. He touched our hearts and souls with his music and we will miss him deeply."
The musicals Herman scored, like the protagonists they starred, were all anchored by a buoyant optimism and a timeless quality even he admitted was uncommon toward the end of his nearly 40-year career. But his songs have since become standards.
"He was so insightful and perceptive," Dorian told CNN. "He really captured the soul and spirit of who we are as Americans."
Many of his most notable musicals centered around charismatic women, like "Hello, Dolly!" "Mame" and "Mack & Mabel," which starred Broadway titans Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters, respectively.
But with "La Cage aux Folles" in 1983, Herman quietly broke ground on Broadway with his portrait of a gay couple who ran a drag nightclub whose relationship woes and triumphs resembled that of any heterosexual couple portrayed on stage. It was a certifiable hit, running for 1,761 performances.
"When they passed out talent, Jerry stood in line twice," Channing, who died earlier this year at 97, once said of Herman.
His work earned him four Tony Awards, including a Special Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. In 2010, his work was celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors alongside Oprah Winfrey and Sir Paul McCartney.
"I'm certainly aware of how different popular music is today from when I started in this business, and I realize that my songwriting is not generally in fashion," he told the New York Times in 1985. "But 'La Cage' made me feel secure about going on and just being what I am, and writing simple, hummable tunes."
He largely retired from composing in the 2000s, though he lent his name to awards for high school musical theatre departments in Los Angeles County.

A self-taught musician who nailed the human condition

Herman devoted himself to the stage after his parents took him to see a production of "Annie Get Your Gun" in the late 1940s. He loved it so much he taught himself to play the piano.
Dorian, whose mother befriended Herman when the two studied at the University of Miami, said Herman was rejected from musical schools a number of times -- not because he was untalented, but because, the auditioners told him, if they trained him, he'd "ruin his talent."
So Herman continued to hone his own talent, writing revues of his songs before he cemented his star with "Hello, Dolly!" in 1964.
That show, and many shows that followed, explore the relationships and inner workings of older leads and much younger supporting characters. It's a skill -- understanding how love transforms with age -- in his songwriting that's grown on Dorian as she's matured.
"I've always found that the more I listen to his lyrics at different stages of my life, they take on different meanings," she said. "He's always spot-on about life, no matter what stage of life. The simplicity of his lyrics can be incredibly powerful."
But beyond his work onstage, he was a second father and best friend to Dorian throughout her life. She remembered an evening when Herman ducked behind a bar in his home during a meeting with legendary producer David Merrick so he could help her with her English homework.
He lived with the same optimism and joy, plus a dash of "devilish humor," that made his music and lyrics so widely beloved, she said.
"It's not often you get to choose your family," she said. "He was just my heart."

What C-3PO Actor Anthony Daniels Finally Learned About 'Star Wars' After 11 Movies - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Anthony Daniels has the rare distinction of being in every live-action Star Wars movie. That’s 11 appearances of C-3PO, the translation droid he plays, and that’s a lot of wearing a gold metal costume. From 1977’s original to now, Daniels admits he’s just made one revelation about Star Wars after completing The Rise of Skywalker.

Daniels was at the press conference for The Rise of Skywalker on December 4. He spoke about his 42 year journey with the galaxy far, far away and what he’s only just now realized in 2019. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters now.

C-3PO in the ‘Star Wars’ saga

Audiences first met C-3PO along with R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) when they got separated from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and ended up on Tattooine where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) bought them. R2-D2 had Leia’s message to Obi Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) which sent them all on the first three adventures.

In the prequels, young Annakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) build C-3PO, and the droid found himself haplessly involved in another trilogy of space adventures. Not only is C-3PO still around in The Force Awakens, but he manages to appear in the prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

This got old about playing C-3PO

Being in every Star Wars movie meant answering exponentially more questions about Star Wars. For a while, each actor was in three movies at most, and even Hamill and Fisher top out at six. Even though Daniels was in 11 films, many of the questions got repetitive.

“The questions I really don’t like is ‘what was it like’ or ‘how does it feel to be in Star Wars?’” Daniels said. “I only just realized, because I’ve been in all of them, all of the spinoffs and stuff, I am so close to it. And I say it’s rather like having your nose up against the planet. You can’t see how big that planet is. Gradually now, I’m beginning to get a perspective on it.”

This made Anthony Daniels appreciate what a privilege ‘Star Wars’ has been

One thing Star Wars offered Anthony Daniels was job security. C-3PO never aged so he could keep putting on the costume forever. But now he’s learned it’s more than that.

“That comes from talking to fans, people who say what Star Wars has meant to them over the years,’ Daniels said. “It’s meant something really different to me. It’s a job. It’s kind of fun. It’s kind of awkward sometimes as we all know. It’s not a smooth ride.”

Anthony Daniels looks at ‘Star Wars’ much differently after ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

11 movies and 42 years later, Anthony Daniels can finally see the big picture of Star Wars.

“I just realized in the last few months something that I had not thought before,” Daniels said. “Finally I’m getting to see it almost from the other perspective and that’s the perspective of the audience who’ve been there all this time. You had to have survived all this long enough to get this perspective.”

This Director Pitched a Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) 'Star Wars' Series to Disney+ - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

#RoseTicoDeservedBetter started trending on December 26, the day after Christmas and nearly a week after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Fans of Kelly Marie Tran’s character from The Last Jedi were disappointed by Rose Tico’s brief screen time in the latest film. Even though Tran herself said publicly that she was happy with her role in the ensemble, especially her scenes incorporated into footage of Carrie Fisher, fans wanted to see more of Rose.

Could Kelly Marie Tran play Rose Tico on Disney+?
Kelly Marie Tran | Samir Hussein/WireImage

It took until 9PM but one Rose Tico fan who may be in a position to do something about it weighed in. A big time Hollywood director pitched Disney+ a Rose Tico streaming series. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now playing in theaters.

The director of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ wants to make a Rose Tico series with Kelly Marie Tran

Jon M.Chu tweeted, “Ok @disneyplus. Put me in coach. Let’s make this series happen.  #RoseTicoDeservedBetter @starwars.” That shows not only does he agree with fans, but he has ideas for more stories to tell with Kelly Marie Tran.

Chu is busy with his big movie career, but it sounds like he would make time to create a series for Kelly Marie Tran’s Star Wars character. He would only really have to direct the first episode and set it up for other directors to carry on, like John Favreau did for The Mandalorian. Actually, Favreau wrote it and Dave Filoni directed so there’s all sorts of ways for Chu to fit it in.

John M. Chu has credentials for telling diverse stories

Crazy Rich Asians was a landmark film: a Hollywood studio movie featuring all Asian leads, that became a blockbuster success. Chu is working on two sequels, but first he directed In the Heights, featuring a cast of Latinx actors like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Stephanie Beatriz, Anthony Ramos, Jimmy Smits, Dascha Polanco, Melissa Barrera, Marc Anthony, Daphne Rubin-Vega and more.

Chu’s earlier films are diverse too. His Step Up sequels, Setup Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D feature dancers from all backgrounds. If anyone knows the value of carrying on Rose Tico’s story, it would be John M. Chu.

John M. Chu could direct ‘Star Wars’ action too

John M. Chu has a lot of experience with ensemble dramas and musicals. He also directed two Justin Bieber documentaries and the Jem and the Holograms movie. Chu has blockbuster experience too

He did big action with G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Explosions and lasers would be part and parcel to any Rose Tico story, but whose to say his Disney+ serious couldn’t be a drama about her relationships planetside. Nah, probably not. Chu also played with visual effects in the magic sequel Now You See Me 2

Will Disney+ accept Rose Tico pitches from Twitter?

Disney has to be paying attention to the fan reaction to sidelining Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. They’ll have to make formal deals offline, but this is a vocal group of subscribers. Chu has some support from tweeps too. West Side Story actor Rahel Zegler is behind Chu:

So is Good Trouble star Sherry Cola:

Writer Michael Schick is also willing to throw support behind a Kelly Marie Tran Disney+ series:

Many other tweeps replied to Chu with support, including one who even suggested going for a film series. Either way, dozens replied and hundreds retweeted Chu’s pitch so maybe he’ll use his influence to make this happen.

Trump appears to joke, blames Trudeau for being cut from 'Home Alone 2' in Canada - Fox News

President Donald Trump on Thursday appeared to joke about his cameo being cut from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s version of "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York."

“I guess Justin T doesn’t much like my making him pay up on NATO or Trade! The movie will never be the same! (just kidding).”

— US President Donald Trump tweet about Justin Trudeau

“I guess Justin T doesn’t much like my making him pay up on NATO or Trade!,” Trump tweeted, referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“The movie will never be the same! (just kidding),” Trump added.

TRUMP SAYS HE GETS ALONG 'GREAT' WITH NATO LEADERS AFTER VIDEO SHOWING APPARENT MOCKERY

Sharp viewers blasted the state-owned broadcaster earlier Thursday after noticing Trump’s scene was missing from the 1992 sequel, which aired earlier in the month.

In the iconic holiday film, Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin McCallister, walks into the Plaza Hotel by himself as he is separated from his family. He runs into a passerby played by Trump and asks, "Excuse me, where's the lobby?"

"Down the hall and to the left," Trump responds as he towers over a young Culkin.

The CBC said the movie wasn’t edited for political purposes, but rather to allow for commercial breaks.

“As is often the case with features adapted for television, Home Alone 2 was edited to allow for commercial time within the format,” Chuck Thompson, head of public affairs at the CBC, said in a statement.
