The Morning After: 'The Rise of Skywalker' reviews are in - Engadget

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

The final chapter of the third Star Wars trilogy is out, and Devindra has thoughts on it. Mat (me) also has feels about avoiding The Rise of Skywalker spoilers across Twitter, work Slack channels and inadvertent WhatsApp messages. Devindra's review is spoiler-free, but I'm steering clear for now.

The jury remains out on what entails a decent amount of time between a movie premiere and when one is (digitally) allowed to discuss that iconic part or twist, whether all the Marvel female superheroes charged on Thanos or when Stark family member X died in season X of Game of Thrones. Don't even mention The Good Place surprise that got half-spoiled for me a few years back.

I'll probably see The Rise of Skywalker this weekend if I can convince the uninterested SO to endure it. Two weeks after release is fair game for post-match analysis, I think. More enthused film fans, franchise stans and angry internet people seem to whittle it down the opening week. Barring an entire digital lock-down and hiding in your garage till you see the thing, how do you avoid spoilers? All tips will be gratefully received.

- Mat

And Ninja's first Adidas go on sale December 31st.Puma's first 'active gaming footwear' is a sock

Now that eSports is getting mainstream attention, the next stop is heavily branded apparel. It might be hard for a gamer to sell as much clothing as LeBron James or Michael Jordan, but that won't keep Nike, Adidas and Puma from trying.

According to Puma, its $105 sock-like "active gaming footwear" has been designed for indoor and in-arena use to deliver "seamless comfort, support and grip so gamers can adapt to different active gaming modes and game their best." Meanwhile, Adidas has introduced the Ninja edition of its Nite Jogger silhouette. The shoes come in the streamer's signature blue and go on sale for $150 on New Year's Eve.

A no-spoilers review.'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' is made for fans, but fails them

Devindra Hardawar has seen the new Star Wars flick, and, well -- we'll let him tell it: "It'll undoubtedly be a crowd-pleaser, but as I sat in the theater, watching the gang run through yet another set piece on the brink of death, I couldn't help but sigh. We could have had so much more." Its rating currently sits at 58 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Its owners already turned down an offer of $1.2 million. The legendary Nintendo PlayStation prototype is up for auction

After years of touring the world to show off the system to classic gaming fans, the owner of what is believed to be the only remaining Nintendo PlayStation prototype is putting the console up for sale. We tried it out in 2015, and you can play it, too, if you win the auction that's set to take place on February 27th.

Good for gaming or spreadsheets.LG's latest 4K monitors include a 32-inch model with a space-saving stand

The headlining LG monitor for 2020 is the UltraFine Ergo (32UN880), a 32-inch 4K screen that floats on a post that clamps to your desk. It's like you're buying a VESA mount at the same time, in other words. This helps make room, of course, but it also lets the monitor swivel up to 280 degrees horizontally and tilt 25 degrees vertically. The other options include a 38-inch UltraWide and three gaming monitors that slightly tweak 2019's successful formula.

The internet of easy-to-use things.Apple, Amazon and Google unite to help create a universal smart home standard

Google, Amazon and Apple (plus others) have created Connected Home Over IP, a new working group managed by the Zigbee Alliance, which aims to develop a new open smart home connectivity standard based on Internet Protocol (IP). For consumers, this will mean that stuff just works together, but it'll be a boon for developers, too, as a universal standard streamlines product development and reduces costs by giving them a blueprint for their products.

But wait, there's more...

Tekashi 6ix9ine victim speaks out after sentencing: 'I did not want him to be able to come home for Christmas' - Fox News

Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine was sentenced to two years in prison for racketeering on Wednesday and now, one of his victims is speaking out.

Speaking to TMZ, Skyy Daniels, who was held up at gunpoint by 6ix9ine’s Nine Trey Blood gang members, spoke about the rapper’s sentencing and said she is happy the rapper won’t be home for the holidays.

“The best thing about the two-year sentence [is] I did not want him to be able to come home for Christmas to his family,” Daniels said. “You know where I was last year for Christmas with my family? I was in the hospital.”

Holding back tears, Daniels became emotional as she continued to reflect on her traumatic incident with the rainbow-haired rapper.

“I was away from my children, I was away from my grandchildren [and] I was away from my parents. I was in hiding in a hospital, suffering from a mental breakdown,” she lamented. “He did not deserve to be home with his family. Justice was served because he was not able to be home with his family for the holidays, just like I was not able to home with my family for the holidays.

TEKASHI 6IX9INE TRANSFERRED FROM FEDERAL JAIL FOR 'SECURITY REASONS': REPORT

Per the victim impact statement obtained by TMZ, Daniels was held up at gunpoint by 6ix9ine’s gang affiliates in a case of mistaken identity in 2018. The members of the Nine Trey Gangster Bloods believed Daniels and her assistant were associates of Rap-A-Lot Records — though they were not.

“My nightmares come from Tekashi. My situation that I’m in, it all stems from that day on April the 3rd, leaving 50 Cent’s studio in Manhattan, Times Square in broad daylight. Having guns put to my abdomen and my head — you know, I can still hear it, I can still feel it,” she said.

“I still need counseling, I haven’t been able to afford it. I’ve suffered financially, mentally, emotionally [and] spiritually. He deserves to pay all of [his victims]. He deserves to have to start over his life, just like we have been forced to.”

Although 6ix9ine was not directly involved in the assault, the victim impact statement states that the rapper recorded the entire ordeal on his phone.

Daniels also reflected on 6ix9ine’s offer to reimburse one of his victim’s medical bills following a shooting, stating, “He should pay her medical bills and yes, he owes me everything because he took everything away from me.”

Chinese Censors, Audiences Unfazed by ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Gay Moment - Variety

The first gay kiss of the “Star Wars” film franchise has surprisingly survived China’s censors and made it to the big screens across the country. Audiences were unfazed as well – or, in some cases, puzzled.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” enjoyed a night of previews in China on Dec. 18, ahead of its day-and-date outing with the North American release on Dec. 20. Director J.J. Abrams had earlier hinted at LGBTQ representation in the latest installment of the franchise, which turned out to be a brief kiss between two female characters.

Those who attended the movie’s preview earlier in China were surprised to see the gay kiss left untouched by the censors. Though homosexuality is no longer a crime in China and no longer classified as a mental illness, censors continue to be strict – but also inconsistent – regarding gay depictions on screen.

Critically acclaimed gay-themed movies such as “Brokeback Mountain” and “Call Me by Your Name” were not given releases in China. Censors demanded more than 10 minutes of cuts from the Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and allowed the release of the shortened version.

Some in China who watched “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” welcomed the scene, saying that although it might not be a significant moment of the film’s narrative, it was still a victory for LGBTQ representation.

Popular on Variety

Others, however, found the gay kiss “baffling,” not for its LGBTQ context but for its place in the story. “Seriously, it was perplexing. The two characters are not lovers. Or their relationship is more noble than that of lovers,” wrote one user on a Baidu discussion forum.

Another user in a discussion forum on Hupu.com wrote: “As an old ‘Star Wars’ fan, just finish this and get it over with. Don’t overthink this. Simply enjoy everything except the embarrassing kiss.”

The surprise moment aside, “The Rise of Skywalker” received a moderate response from Chinese audiences ahead of the full opening on Friday. Users on the popular movie website Mtime gave it an average rating of 7.5 out of 10. Douban, another popular movie website, recorded an average rating of 6.9.

One user with the handle Roger4 gave the movie a rating of 6.4 on Mtime and wrote: “They might as well stop making ‘Star Wars’ movies altogether.”

On movie website Douban, another questioned if this installment of “Star Wars” was a “space version of Harry Potter.”

Despite its long history and deep cultural influence in the West, the original “The Star Wars” films were not shown in China at the time of their release. That has limited the franchise’s fan base in China.

“The Rise of Skywalker” had taken more than RMB21.7 million ($3.1 million) at the Chinese box office by 6 p.m. local time Thursday, according to ticketing agency Maoyan. That is a combination of Wednesday’ previews and sales for Thursday’s midnight screenings.
