Box Office: Clint Eastwood's Praised “Richard Jewell” Gets Disappointing Start After Controversy Threatens to Kill It - Showbiz411

Home Movies Box Office: Clint Eastwood’s Praised “Richard Jewell” Gets Disappointing Start After Controversy...

Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” should be a movie everyone’s talking about right now. And indeed they are, but not for the right reasons. With a controversy surrounding it, the Warner Bros. film has had a disappointing launch on its opening night.

“Richard Jewell” made just $1.5 million on Friday night in over 2,000 theaters. Its weekend cume will come to under $4.5 million. Coupled with a lack of awards nominations– a mistake, I think — the film doesn’t have the brightest future. What s shame.

The true story of how Jewell’s life was ruined by local law enforcement, the FBI, and the media in Atlanta when he was falsely accused of bombing the 1996 Olympics is extremely well conveyed by Eastwood and a sterling cast. But the secondary plot– of a real life reporter from the Atlanta Journal Constitution sleeping with a source to break the story– has turned “Richard Jewell” into a marketing nightmare.

The AJC is conducting a war against the movie, denying that the late reporter, Kathy Scruggs, would have done such a thing. Everyone who knew Scruggs has spoken out, too, including her colleagues and her family, all in agreement that while she was unconventional, and wore short skirts (that part is the most amusing), Scruggs wouldn’t have crossed that line.

To make matters worse, the movie uses her name but not the real name of the FBI agent she supposedly slept with. So Jon Hamm’s character is basically fictional, while Olivia Wilde is representing a real person.

The debate about this plot point has come to taint what would have otherwise been a critical and possible financial hit. We’ve seen this before–a great movie can be killed in the marketing. Look at Nate Parker’s “The Birth of a Nation,” which died because of the revelation Parker had been acquitted in a college rape trial. That was the end of that movie, which was on track for awards acclaim.

Wilde, who’s so good as “Scruggs,” has defended her role. The movie company has pointed out that the AJC nevertheless was culpable in ruining Jewell’s life. But either the AJC’s campaign against the movie, or a sub rosa Hollywood campaign against “Richard Jewell,” has certainly made the movie’s situation unfavorable.

It’s not great for Warner Bros. on a different score. They’ve been unable all year to make non branded adult films catch on. (“Joker” can’t be counted in there because it comes from DC Comics.) Their last chance is “Just Mercy,” with Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan, which is also excellent and just landed Foxx a SAG Awards nomination. So far, there’s no controversy (fingers crossed). “Just Mercy” deserves an Oscar comeback after disappointing rounds with the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.

In the meantime, go see “Richard Jewell.” As I said when I saw it, it’s a jewel of a movie and one of Eastwood’s best.

Box Office: ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ Heading for $50 Million as ‘Richard Jewell’ Sputters - Variety

“Frozen 2’s” reign at the box office is finally over: Sony’s “Jumanji: The Next Level” is on its way to a winning $50 million debut.

The sequel film starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart is opening at 4,227 North American locations and took in $19.4 million on Friday. That number set a few December records, including the biggest December opening day for a Sony film and the highest December opening day for a comedy of all time.

Directed by Jake Kasdan from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, “Jumanji: The Next Level” sees the characters from Sony’s 2017 blockbuster return to rescue one of their own from the infamous game. In addition to Johnson, Black, Gillan, and Hart, Nick Jonas also reprises his role alongside franchise newcomers Awkwafina, Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Danny Glover and Danny DeVito. Kasdan, Johnson, Matt Tolmach, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia produced the film, which has a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Fellow new releases “Black Christmas” and “Richard Jewell” are both coming in significantly below earlier tracking forecasts, which had placed them in the $10 million to $12 million range. They’re now on track to battle for the No. 4 slot with about $4.5 million each.

Popular on Variety

Universal’s “Black Christmas,” a remake of the 1974 slasher film, picked up $1.8 million on Friday. The thriller follows a group of sorority sisters who are beset by a mysterious stalker. Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O’Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, and Cary Elwes star in the film, directed by Sophia Takal. “Black Christmas” has a 43% Rotten Tomatoes score and D+ CinemaScore, though Variety critic Owen Gleiberman called it “deviously sensational” and commended it for being “actually rooted in something relevant and interesting.”

Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell,” which stars Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde, took in $1.5 million on Friday from 2,502 domestic sites. The Warner Bros. drama has been the subject of controversy leading up to its release due to the depiction of real-life journalist Kathy Scruggs (Wilde), who appears to trade sex for news tips in the movie. On Thursday, Wilde posted a series of messages on Twitter stating that she was under the impression when filming that her character had a pre-existing relationship with the FBI agent she sleeps with (Hamm). Eastwood directed the film, which has earned a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score and A CinemaScore, from a script by Billy Ray.

Awards contenders “A Hidden Life” and “Bombshell” also make their limited debuts this weekend, with Terrence Malick’s latest feature pulling in $16,000 on Friday from five theaters. Jay Roach’s Fox News/Roger Ailes drama, starring Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie, took in a stellar $134,000 from four theaters on Friday and is headed for about $284,000 through the weekend.

Meanwhile, “Frozen 2” should land in second after being dethroned by “Jumanji 2” with about $18 million. The animated adventure is nearing the $1 billion mark globally, with $931 million worldwide. Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” should generate another $9.2 million this weekend for the third place slot. The whodunit has earned $72 million domestically since its release, along with $61 million internationally for a global total of $133 million.

The Rise Of Skywalker cast answers all The Late Show's questions, but not really - The A.V. Club

You are going to see Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker once it hits every theater in the known world on Friday. That’s not Jedi mind trickery, it’s just a prediction. (Also, if you signed up for Disney+, you are legally bound to buy one ticket, two action figures, and a Chewbacca plushie. Read the fine print.) But since the Disney Empire isn’t content with the natural drawing power of the ninth and final film in a record-breaking, era-defining, nine-movie space saga making most of the money, they’ve also got the movie’s cast and creator out there shilling super-hard on late-night TV. Luckily for us (and Stephen Colbert), the Star Wars gang is all pretty much a bunch of adorable goofballs about it all, especially when plugged into one of The Late Show’s recurring bits, Just One Question.

With various Late Show staffers supposedly caught off guard backstage while doing lightly inexplicable things (Why is that one lady wrapping a pumpkin in Christmas paper?) and asking their own burning Star Wars questions, the bit saw pretty much everyone involved in The Rise Of Skywalker taking whacks at answering. But not really. Oscar Isaac claims his favorite Star Wars character is Spock, and storms off when challenged. (But not before mocking another questioner by whipping out the Bill Marco, Graphic Designer action figure for some roleplay.) Billy Dee Williams force-chokes a guy. (RIP Late Show writer and performer John Thibodeaux.) John Boyega (pointedly not asked about seemingly taking the side of the online chuds harassing co-star Kelly Marie Tran), struggles to explain what a Wookiee is, while Tran herself is surprised by a Late Night crew member’s startlingly accurate homemade lightsaber.

And so it goes, with everyone from Daisy Ridley, Anthony Daniels, J.J. Abrams (don’t ask him about midichlorians or Baby Yoda, please), and new cast additions Keri Russell and Naomi Ackie finally taking turns attempting to sum up nine movies’ worth of convoluted, retconned, and awkwardly avoided (see: midichlorians, Luke kissing Leia) plot details for the benefit of one staffer who claims never to have seen them. Abrams, obligingly, kicks things off by explaining how, obviously, the whole epic space opera was set in motion by two space wizards sent to negotiate trade policy. From there, it’s all farmboys, improbable coincidences, a seemingly inexhaustible supply of “evil metal planets” for the good guys to blow up, a “dog-man-thing majiggybob” (that’s Chewie), and the sister-kissing, and that brings us all up to date.

This One Direction Member Is the 'Antichrist Version' of Harry Styles - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

After One Direction went on hiatus, each of the former members of the group found success as solo artists. Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson have each created distinct musical identities for themselves. They often get asked their opinions of one another. One member of the group went so far as to call himself the “Antichrist version” of Styles. Here’s who made that provocative remark.

Liam Payne grew distant from Harry Styles

Payne was asked about Styles in an interview with The Face. He said “I was actually genuinely looking at some pictures of him the other day, and I just thought, “I don’t know what more I’d say to him other than, ‘Hello’ and ‘How are you?’.”

He contrasted himself with Styles, remarking “I mean, look at the stuff I put out, and the stuff Harry puts out. Polar opposite. I’m like the Antichrist version of what Harry is.”

Payne feeling that Styles’ music is the antithesis of his own makes sense. Payne’s music exists entirely within the realm of modern pop. Meanwhile, Styles’ music takes inspiration from the rock music of the 1960s and 1970s.

It’s possible Payne was comparing Styles to Christ because of Styles’ upcoming album. Harper’s Bazaar reported on the art for Styles’ album, Fine Line. In one of the images, Styles strikes a pose oddly similar to that of Christ on the cross. Was the resemblance intentional? Was Styles trying to make a statement through the image?

What does Liam Payne think of Harry Style’s outfits?

In addition to his provocative album art, Styles has made headlines for his unique wardrobe. Styles is known for wearing bright colors and androgynous clothing. Styles discussed his view on fashion and gender in L’Officiel, opining “Many borders are falling—in fashion, but also in music, films, and art.”

He added “I don’t think people are still looking for this gender differentiation. Even if the masculine and feminine exist, their limits are the subject of a game. We no longer need to be this or that.”

When Payne was asked about Style’s fashion, he said “Do you know what? For me, it’s a case of fair play to him for doing what he f*cking wants.”

Payne continued “If [Styles] wants to wear one earring and go to the Met Gala wearing something unexpected, what of it? Fair f*cking play. I couldn’t put myself in that. I’d look f*cking… It’d look weird.”

Which member of One Direction does Liam Payne want to talk to?

Payne was also asked which One Direction member he’d like to get the chance to talk to. He answered “To be honest with you, more than anyone, probably Harry. I speak to Louis quite regularly. I feel like I know where I stand with Niall. But with Harry, there’s so much mystery around who he’s kind of become.”
