Ric Ocasek of the Cars dies at 75: obituary - Los Angeles Times

The musician and producer Ric Ocasek, whose singing, songwriting, style and demeanor as leader of Boston rock band the Cars helped define the American new wave movement of the late 1970s and early ‘80s, has died. He was 75.

Ocasek’s death was confirmed by the New York Police Department, which said that officers responding to a 911 call on Sunday afternoon discovered him unresponsive at about 4 p.m. There were no signs of foul play, according to the Associated Press.

Starting with the Cars’ self-titled debut album in 1978, the cool, lanky frontman and his bandmates rushed the charts — and the nascent music video channel MTV — with a string of sleekly modern, ultra-catchy power-pop hits including “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Let’s Go,” “Bye Bye Love” and “Shake It Up.”

“The Cars had it all: the looks, the hooks, beat-romance lyrics, killer choruses, guitar solos that pissed off your parents, dazzling music videos,” Brandon Flowers of the Killers said last year when the Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The honor capped a creative life known not only for work with the Cars and as a solo artist, but as a golden-eared aesthete who produced seminal recordings for New York synth-punk pioneers Suicide, Washington, D.C. afro-punk band Bad Brains and Los Angeles pop-punk band Weezer.

Ocasek’s understated, awkward charisma was such that he married supermodel Paulina Porizkova at the peak of both of their fame, and in doing offered a way forward for unassuming singers less interested in the peacock antics of a Mick Jagger or Freddie Mercury. There was no need to flail about like a madman when an arched eyebrow and minimal hip-shake could do the trick.

The approach was successful. “If anything, I’m recognizable,” he said with typical understatement when asked about his 1980s ubiquity on MTV.

Ric Ocasek and Paulina Porizkova

Ric Ocasek and Paulina Porizkova were together for 28 years before they announced their separation in 2018.

That presence was hard-earned. By the time the artist born Richard Theodore Otcasek formed the Cars with Benjamin Orr, Greg Hawkes, David Robinson and Elliot Easton, he’d been working the northeast circuit for years. Ocasek and the late Cars bassist Orr opened for proto-punk bands the Stooges and MC5 in the early ‘70s, and recorded an album as part of a folk-rock outfit called Milkwood later.

The Cars formed in 1976, and after earning Boston radio airplay for an early recording of “Just What I Needed,” soon signed with the respected label Elektra, where they joined a roster that included Queen, Carly Simon, Harry Chapin and dozens of other ‘70s rockers.

Amid the long-hairs still buzzing over the hippie thing, Ocasek’s half-spoken, coyly ambivalent delivery stood out, and suggested his avowed inspiration, Lou Reed, as channeled through a rockabilly crooner. Ocasek fawned over a former flame’s “nuclear boots” and “suede-blue eyes” on “My Best Friend’s Girl.” For “Bye Bye Love,” Ocasek highlighted a “wavy midnight” rich with “hidden innuendos” and “substitution, mass confusion, clouds inside your head.”

The work thrust the so-called “new wave” of musicians inspired by the British and American punk movement into the mainstream. “The Cars” went multi-platinum, and helped pave the way for bands such as the B-52’s, Devo and later R.E.M. to jump to major labels. After the Cars disbanded in 1988, Ocasek issued a number of solo albums, to modest success. When his longtime bandmate Orr — who sang lead vocals on the band’s smash ballad “Drive” — died in 2000, any hope of a full-fledged reunion passed, too.

Their fans’ devotion, though, remained. When the four surviving members reunited for “Move Like This” in 2010, the album debuted on the Billboard album chart at No. 7. Eight years later, the Cars performed a medley of their hits at the 2018 Rock Hall induction ceremony.

From the stage, Ocasek thanked his grandmother first, he said, for “forcing me to sing for her friends in the parlor when I was five years old.” She also bought him a Sears & Roebuck guitar when he was a teenager. “Then one day I heard a song on the radio called ‘That’ll Be The Day’ by Buddy Holly. So I started playing guitar then.”

Thus inspired, the artist’s creativity ignited like a spark plug.

“So many people are so goddamned bored and won’t even... get out of their chairs to go look for something to do,” he told Creem magazine in 1983, of his drive for musical success. “You can’t rely on the rest of the world to take your hand, you know. You have to sort of get out and look for something to get involved in or just do it yourself.”

Game of Thrones season 8 has already won 10 Emmy awards - CNET

Cheer up, Jon.

Helen Sloan/HBO

Game of Thrones' final season is extremely polarizing. Case in point: Over a million people have signed an infamous petition to have it remade, yet it's snagged a record breaking amount of Emmy nods. If you're in the "season 8 is trash" camp, you may be distressed to hear that the season has already won 10 Emmy awards.

The main Emmy Awards take place Sept. 22, next Sunday. Before the event proper, though, comes the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony, which took place over the weekend at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. In what could be a sign of vindication for showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, Game of Thrones was the biggest winner of the weekend.

Thrones took home 10 Emmy awards. Here's all of them:

  • Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama series
  • Outstanding Special Visual Effects
  • Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes
  • Outstanding Makeup for a Single-Camera Series
  • Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Limited Series or Movie
  • Outstanding Main Title Design
  • Outstanding Music Composition for a Series
  • Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series
  • Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series

Now playing: Watch this: Game of Thrones season 8 finale: Our watch has ended

6:42

You'll note that all but one of these is for production value. Outside a particularly dark episode, which HBO's compression took some of the blame for, production quality was never really a sore point for disgruntled fans. Plus, if you saw The Last Watch you'll be across the insane man hours that went into the production side of Game of Thrones. So this all makes sense.

The second biggest winner of the Creative Arts Emmys was Chernobyl. It won 7 awards, including Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Limited Series or Movie and Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Supporting Role.

Game of Thrones got 32 nominations in total, making HBO the network with the most total nominations this year -- 137 in all. Game of Thrones scored a nomination for best drama series, and stars Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke were nominated for lead actor and actress in a drama series, respectively. Supporting actors and actresses including Peter Dinklage, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams were also nominated.

The winners of these categories, and many more, will be revealed next Sunday.

Yang Has Non-Fighting Words for SNL Cast Member's Racism - Newser

(Newser) Saturday Night Live's newest cast member might have referred to an Asian-American presidential candidate as a "Jew ch---," but Andrew Yang is giving peace a chance, reports People. After Shane Gillis tweeted that "My intention is never to hurt anyone," but sometimes comedy "requires risks," Yang responded that "I prefer comedy that makes people think and doesn’t take cheap shots. But I’m happy to sit down and talk with you if you’d like.” He also defended Gillis, who has been criticized for racist and homophobic statements in his comedy, saying that "I do not think he should lose his job. We would benefit from being more forgiving rather than punitive. We are all human." (Read more Shane Gillis stories.)

Why Prince Harry Can't Blame Prince William for Warning Him About Meghan Markle - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

It is natural for older siblings to look out for the younger ones. Even in the royal family, it can be difficult to watch brothers and sisters try to go out and navigate the world on their own.

Prince William and Prince Harry are not that far apart in age, and they most likely shared a lot of life experiences around the same time. This means that there is a good chance that Prince Harry had the advantage of turning to Prince William whenever he needed advice.

As most royal fans are well aware, there has been some tension between Prince William and Prince Harry in recent months. Apparently, it was over a discussion they had before Prince Harry was married. Prince William reportedly expressed his concerns and Prince Harry got offended.

All seems to be fine now, but we have to say that Prince Harry can’t blame Prince William for warning him about Meghan Markle.

Prince William and Kate Middleton barely had time to get to know Meghan Markle

Prince William and Kate Middleton were together for so long before he finally asked her to marry him that the media dubbed her “Waity Katie” for being so patient while waiting for a proposal. Prince Harry and Markle were together for a much shorter amount of time, only a little over a year, as reported by Town & Country.

After being Prince William’s girlfriend for so many years, Duchess Kate had plenty of time to form relationships with the rest of the royals. Given that Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry had a whirlwind relationship — in addition to the fact that in the beginning, they were living on different continents — the family, especially Kate and Will, didn’t have the opportunity to get to know Markle very well. We can only imagine that they wish they had more time to spend getting to know the woman who was going to become their royal sister-in-law, yet with busy schedules and limited time, this just didn’t happen.

Prince William expressed his concerns to Prince Harry

In a typical big brother move, Prince William reportedly sat down with Prince Harry shortly after he became serious with Markle. Us Weekly reports that while Prince William was only looking out for his brother, Prince Harry still didn’t take kindly to what he had to say.

The Duke of Cambridge expressed concern about the relationship moving too fast, and he wanted to make sure that Prince Harry knew exactly what he was doing. He also wanted to make sure that Prince Harry had enough time to completely think everything through before getting married. It is likely that Prince William was thinking about his relationship with Middleton, and how they had quite a few ups and downs, including a very public breakup, during the time they were dating.

With Prince Harry and Markle taking things so quickly, it wasn’t too much of a surprise that Prince William was cautious. Still, Prince Harry was upset, feeling that his brother was trying to ruin his relationship, and the royal feud allegedly began.

Why can’t Prince Harry blame Prince William for warning him about Meghan Markle?

Prince Harry needs to understand that if Prince William didn’t care about him, he wouldn’t have bothered to warn him at all. As an older brother, Prince William just wanted to see that Prince Harry was as happy as possible. He knew that for himself and Middleton, things weren’t always as perfect as they would have wanted them to be, and he was offering the advice and protection that he felt was necessary.

Although Prince Harry may have been a bit angry about the situation, Prince William was acting out of love and wanted the best for the younger prince.
