Rihanna: 1; Victoria’s Secret: 0 | News & Analysis, Fashion Show Review | BoF - The Business of Fashion

NEW YORK, United States — Rihanna has sold over 60 million albums and released 14 chart-topping singles. It’s no wonder, then, that when she decided to stage a streaming fashion show for her Savage x Fenty lingerie line, rebooting a format popularised by American lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret, she tapped into her experience as a star entertainer.

On Tuesday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, her hyped Savage x Fenty extravaganza was a series of complex, high-energy dances executed by model-performers of all skin tones and sizes, with special appearances from runway regulars like Gigi Hadid and celebrities like Normani. These dances were interspersed with musical performances by DJ Khaled, Halsey, Big Sean, A$AP Ferg, Fat Joe, Migos and more.

“They are definitely taking a page out of the Victoria’s Secret playbook,” said retail consultant Gabriella Santaniello of A Line partners.

But unlike in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, the show’s emphasis wasn’t an idealized body type, but the body in motion. Her performers didn’t just strut — they twerked and body rolled, performing athletic, complex moves choreographed by Parris Goebel, known for her work on music videos such as Justin Bieber’s "Sorry.”

“I love how she makes everything sexy despite society’s ideal of what sexy looks,” said Rihanna in an interview after the show. “I don’t care about any skinny Victoria’s Secret model when I look at Parris. I want to be that woman on the inside. I want to feel that confident I want to feel that bombastic… That is the Savage brand.”

And while the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show aired on conventional television, the Savage x Fenty show will start streaming globally to Amazon Prime’s 200 million members on September 20. Rihanna said partnering with Amazon was a no-brainer. “Amazon came in and said, ‘Hey, we want to be a part of it.’ And you’re not going to deny a platform like Amazon Prime.”

Her goal is to introduce as many women as possible to the brand. “There are a lot of women out there who are feeling in the dark, invisible. 'I can’t try that on because I’m not made that like,'” she said. “This is where you feel safe, right here at Savage.”

Rihanna opened the show with some dance moves of her own. But she otherwise ceded the spotlight to her models and performers, who mostly played to the cameras, not the audience, which included top fashion editors like Anna Wintour and Edward Enninful; celebrities like Diplo, Wale and Kacey Musgraves; and longtime collaborators like Mel Ottenberg; as well as plenty of suits.

The pop star has focused on her fashion businesses in recent years. In 2017, she launched her Fenty makeup range with LVMH's Kendo (the line generated €500 million in its first full year in business). In 2018, she followed up with the launch of Savage x Fenty lingerie, a joint venture with Techstyle Fashion Group which recently announced a $50 million funding round from Jay-Z’s Marcy Venture Partners LLC and Avenir Growth Capital.

Both her beauty and lingerie lines gained traction, in part, because they put inclusivity at the core of their product and marketing strategies. Fenty Beauty launched with 40 shades of foundation tones, while Savage X Fenty sells bras from 32A to 46DDD and underwear and sleepwear in sizes XS to 3X. Both brands feature a diverse lineup of models in their campaign imagery. (This spring, Rihanna also launched a ready-to-wear label with LVMH.)

“Rihanna has been clever and very strategic about the way she’s tapped into what people want to see,” said marketing consultant and creative strategist Emma Rees.

But can the pop star’s lingerie venture, with an estimated $150 million in annual revenue, really challenge Victoria’s Secret? It is losing ground to fast-growing competitors like American Eagle’s Aerie and online start-ups like ThirdLove, but still has more than $7 billion in sales.

In today’s fragmented internet landscape, mega-celebrities like Rihanna can have more influence than brands, said Jordan Fox, founder and president of digital and personal branding group MMP Group. Rihanna isn’t the only one turning a personal brand into a business. But for Fox, Rihanna has been more successful than many of her celebrity peers because of the team she’s built around her and her relatable and accessible personality.

Even with her star power, it remains to be seen whether Rihanna can build a brand that truly rivals Victoria’s Secret annual fashion show at its prime when it attracted more than 10 million television viewers. “The days of that type of hype are gone,” said Santaniello.

Serena Williams wins New York Fashion Week with daughter Alexis Olympia on the runway - USA TODAY

Serena Williams may not have won the U.S. Open over the weekend, but the tennis star did win New York Fashion Week, with her daughter by her side.

Two-year-old Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. made her runway debut in her mother's arms Tuesday, dressed in a black shirt, colorful Nike sneakers and an adorable high ponytail.

The mother-daughter duo strutted down the catwalk following Williams' presentation of her S by Serena collection created to celebrate "women who turn fear into courage and doubt into confidence."

"It's really important for me to be all-inclusive. I really love the word inclusivity and not exclusivity — I think that's just better,” she told Glamour backstage. "I think it's so important for everyone to feel like they can see an outfit and think, ‘Oh, that looks like me and I feel good in it.’ It doesn't matter what color they are."

Britney Spears has a new conservator after father Jamie Spears steps down: Reports - USA TODAY

Britney Spears has a new conservator.

A judge approved a request Monday to name the singer's current care manager, Jodi Montgomery, as her new temporary conservator, according to court documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight and Us Weekly.

Montgomery will take over the role from Spears' father, Jamie, who had served as the pop star's conservator since 2008, following her public meltdown and hospitalization.

As her conservator, Montgomery will have the power to limit or restrict Spears' visitors, the power to access the Grammy winner's medical records and the ability to retain caretakers and security guards for Spears around the clock, according to documents.

The decision granted Montgomery this authority until January.

In May, Spears appeared in court alongside her parents over her conservatorship, where a judge ordered an expert evaluation of the singer's situation.

For years, Spears has been publicly silent about the severe restrictions on her decisions put in place in 2008, which placed control of nearly all of her affairs in the hands of her father.

It's not clear why Jamie stepped down, but he has been battling health issues of his own after he "almost died" from a ruptured colon last year. His health scare prompted Spears to cancel her Las Vegas residency show.

"it’s important to always put your family first … and that’s the decision I had to make," she wrote on Instagram in January. "A couple of months ago, my father was hospitalized and almost died. We’re all so grateful that he came out of it alive, but he still has a long road ahead of him. I had to make the difficult decision to put my full focus and energy on my family at this time."

USA TODAY reached out to Spears' attorney for comment.

Horror king Stephen King can save Hollywood from having a horrible box-office year - The Straits Times

It has been a horrible year so far at the North American box office but horror king Stephen King may just help banish the fears for the rest of 2019.

A robust audience turned out to catch It: Chapter Two - based on a King novel - in theatres over the weekend.

Warner said It: Chapter Two earned an estimated US$91 million (S$126 million) from North American ticket sales in its first weekend.

Trailing only its predecessor that debuted to a record US$123.4 million in September 2017, the launch of It: Chapter Two is the second highest opening for a horror film ever and the month of September, which before It was not a strong month for blockbusters.

It: Chapter Two brings the Losers Club back to Derry 27 years later to take on demonic clown Pennywise.

After a downbeat summer for the industry as a whole and a year that is still running 6 per cent off, It: Chapter Two is a promising start to the fall movie season.

There are high hopes that another movie adaptation of a King novel - Doctor Sleep - will also provide a lifeline when it screens in theatres on Nov 8.

The sequel to The Shining (both King's 1977 book and director Stanley Kubrick's 1980 movie adaptation) follows a grown-up Danny Torrance who continues to deal with the psychological trauma inflicted upon him by his father Jack.

A trailer, which was released last week, has already vetted appetites among King fans, which suggests a box-office smash for the movie that should further help Hollywood bigwigs lose less sleep over the health of their industry.

New Book: Bob Weinstein Urged Harvey to Get Help - Newser

(Newser) – Harvey Weinstein's brother knew about his "misbehavior" and urged him to get help two years before the movie mogul's downfall, according to a new book from two New York Times journalists who helped expose Weinstein's sexual misconduct. "You have brought shame to the family and your company through your misbehavior," Bob Weinstein wrote in a memo published in She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement. "Your reaction was once more to blame the victims, or to minimize the misbehavior in various ways. If you think nothing is wrong with your misbehavior so in this area then announce it to your wife and family." Bob Weinstein, his brother's business partner in Miramax and The Weinstein Company, told authors Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey that he saw his brother's problem as sex addiction and was eventually "worn out" by his efforts to intervene, Variety reports

The book discloses that former Weinstein Company accountant Irwin Reiter helped the journalists expose Weinstein's behavior toward women after raising concerns within the company had no effect, the New York Times reports. It also reveals that victims' rights advocate Lisa Bloom worked with Weinstein to try to discredit Rose McGowan, one of the first accusers to go public. "I feel equipped to help you against the Roses of the world, because I have represented so many of them," Bloom, who charged Weinstein $895 per hour, wrote in a December 2016 memo. Bloom outlined ways to damage McGowan's reputation, suggesting: "We can place an article re her becoming increasingly unglued, so that when someone Googles her this is what pops up and she's discredited." McGowan said Sunday that the email is "staggering" and she thinks Bloom should be disbarred. (Read more Harvey Weinstein stories.)
