Horror king Stephen King can save Hollywood from having a horrible box-office year - The Straits Times

It has been a horrible year so far at the North American box office but horror king Stephen King may just help banish the fears for the rest of 2019.

A robust audience turned out to catch It: Chapter Two - based on a King novel - in theatres over the weekend.

Warner said It: Chapter Two earned an estimated US$91 million (S$126 million) from North American ticket sales in its first weekend.

Trailing only its predecessor that debuted to a record US$123.4 million in September 2017, the launch of It: Chapter Two is the second highest opening for a horror film ever and the month of September, which before It was not a strong month for blockbusters.

It: Chapter Two brings the Losers Club back to Derry 27 years later to take on demonic clown Pennywise.

After a downbeat summer for the industry as a whole and a year that is still running 6 per cent off, It: Chapter Two is a promising start to the fall movie season.

There are high hopes that another movie adaptation of a King novel - Doctor Sleep - will also provide a lifeline when it screens in theatres on Nov 8.

The sequel to The Shining (both King's 1977 book and director Stanley Kubrick's 1980 movie adaptation) follows a grown-up Danny Torrance who continues to deal with the psychological trauma inflicted upon him by his father Jack.

A trailer, which was released last week, has already vetted appetites among King fans, which suggests a box-office smash for the movie that should further help Hollywood bigwigs lose less sleep over the health of their industry.

New Book: Bob Weinstein Urged Harvey to Get Help - Newser

(Newser) – Harvey Weinstein's brother knew about his "misbehavior" and urged him to get help two years before the movie mogul's downfall, according to a new book from two New York Times journalists who helped expose Weinstein's sexual misconduct. "You have brought shame to the family and your company through your misbehavior," Bob Weinstein wrote in a memo published in She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement. "Your reaction was once more to blame the victims, or to minimize the misbehavior in various ways. If you think nothing is wrong with your misbehavior so in this area then announce it to your wife and family." Bob Weinstein, his brother's business partner in Miramax and The Weinstein Company, told authors Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey that he saw his brother's problem as sex addiction and was eventually "worn out" by his efforts to intervene, Variety reports

The book discloses that former Weinstein Company accountant Irwin Reiter helped the journalists expose Weinstein's behavior toward women after raising concerns within the company had no effect, the New York Times reports. It also reveals that victims' rights advocate Lisa Bloom worked with Weinstein to try to discredit Rose McGowan, one of the first accusers to go public. "I feel equipped to help you against the Roses of the world, because I have represented so many of them," Bloom, who charged Weinstein $895 per hour, wrote in a December 2016 memo. Bloom outlined ways to damage McGowan's reputation, suggesting: "We can place an article re her becoming increasingly unglued, so that when someone Googles her this is what pops up and she's discredited." McGowan said Sunday that the email is "staggering" and she thinks Bloom should be disbarred. (Read more Harvey Weinstein stories.)

Little Mix's Jesy Nelson Recalls Attempting Suicide Over Cyberbullying - E! NEWS

Jesy Nelson attempted suicide after being targeted by online trolls.

The Little Mix star opened up about her experience in a new BBC Three documentary called Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out.

As fans will recall, Nelson auditioned for The X Factor in 2011. While she auditioned as a solo artist, she was eventually put into a girl group called Little Mix with Jade Thirlwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards. During one of the episodes, the band sang a cover of Nicki Minaj's hit "Super Bass." They then gathered backstage to watch their performance on YouTube.

"I was very naive," she told The Guardian in an interview published Sunday. "I thought it would be people giving their opinion on our performance. But nearly every comment was about the way I looked: 'She's a fat ugly rat'; ‘How has she got in this girl group?'; ‘How is the fat one in this?'"

Soon, Nelson became "obsessed" with reading people's comments.

"I had a routine of waking up, going on Twitter, searching for the worst things I could about myself. I'd type in the search bar: 'Jesy fat', or ‘Jesy ugly', and see what would come up," she told the newspaper. "Sometimes I didn't even need to do that, I'd just write 'Jesy' and then I'd see all the horrible things. Everyone told me to ignore it–but it was like an addiction."

Little Mix ended up winning the competition. While many would think this would be one of the happiest moments in Nelson's life, this wasn't the case. According to the newspaper, the artist received a Facebook message from a stranger just hours after the win that read, "You are the ugliest thing I've seen in my life, you do not deserve to be in this girl band. You deserve to die.'"

As Little Mix's popularity increased, so did the online criticism. According to The Guardian, Nelson became depressed; however, she refused antidepressants, and therapy wasn't working. She also started to "starve" herself.

In 2013, the band returned to The X Factor as guest stars. Nelson said she had lost weight and hoped the bullying would stop. However, it didn't and Nelson became "severely depressed."

"The only way I can describe the pain is like constantly being heartbroken," she said in the documentary, per the BBC. "I remember going to the kitchen and I just took as many tablets as I could. Then my ex, who was with me at the time, he woke up and was like, 'Why are you crying?' I kept saying, 'I just want to die.'"

According to the BBC, Nelson was then taken to the hospital. Per the news outlet, she wasn't left with any complications following the suicide attempt.

Now, Nelson is hoping her story will help others.

"I think this is important now because social media is such a huge part of everyone's lives," she said in a trailer for the documentary. "You can say one nasty comment and think they're not going to see it or it doesn't mean anything to you but it does. It affects people massively, and I'm meeting a lot of people along the way who also suffered from online trolling. They're telling their story of how it's affected them."

Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out debuts on Sept. 12.

The Biggest Lie About Meghan Markle You Should Stop Believing - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Meghan Markle’s life changed drastically when she married Prince Harry. Although it could be said that the former actress is living the ultimate fairy tale — having met and married a handsome prince — it hasn’t been easy for her.

Before joining the royal family, Duchess Meghan‘s life was pretty typical. She may have been one of the stars of the very popular television show, Suits, but she didn’t have nearly as much fame as she does now. When Prince Harry and Markle went public with their relationship, she suddenly became one of the most famous women in the world.

As a result, she went from living a quiet life in Toronto to a highly publicized one in England. Constantly being followed by photographers, being the subject of rumors, and having details of your life constantly becoming headline news is anything but easy. Not to mention the rumors and false stories that spread. With so many revelations, what is the biggest lie that everyone should stop believing about Markle?

Meghan Markle’s big break

Markle grew up knowing that she had a passion for acting. According to The Sun, her estranged father, Thomas Markle, was a lighting director on the hit comedy Married With Children. Markle often accompanied him to the set.

She began her career with small supporting roles in films and even did freelance calligraphy work while she was waiting for things to really take off. Finally, Markle’s big break came when she landed the role of Rachel Zane in the legal drama Suits

Success doesn’t mean lots of attention

Although Markle was doing extremely well on Suits, she didn’t have the high-profile life that often comes with being a celebrity. Good Housekeeping reports that her life was actually pretty relatable, and she spent a good amount of her time hanging out with her co-stars.

Markle enjoyed publishing her lifestyle blog, The Tig, and doing volunteer and humanitarian work. Although she was definitely a well-known, successful actress, she wasn’t closely followed by the news media or chased by swarms of paparazzi.

In fact, according to The List, Markle had quite a bit of freedom before marrying into the royal family. She was able to go out with her friends, travel by herself, and pretty much do as she pleased. Since becoming the Duchess of Sussex, Markle’s life is different, and it seems that she is constantly being watched and often criticized by others.

Meghan Markle wasn’t prepared for the attention that life as a royal brought her

Just one week ago, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex asked that you kindly consider supporting various organisations around the world in lieu of sending gifts for the upcoming arrival of their first born. Not only did many of you lend your support, you took action. Their Royal Highnesses wanted you to know the impact of your support – the direct effect your donation, energy, and action made! YOU chose to be part of the collective good, and you have made a real difference. Whether a $5 donation, £1000 contribution, offering to volunteer, or spreading the word – you’ve played your part. And on behalf of The Duke and Duchess (and Baby Sussex), we thank you so much. YOUR IMPACT: @thelunchboxfund will now be able to provide a minimum of 100,000 additional hot nutritionally fortified meals to children in dire need across South Africa @littlevillagehq received donations from all over the world (from UAE to Hong Kong and the US), they’ve increased their monthly donors, had a surge in volunteer applications, and re-energized their hard working team of 200+ staff and volunteers @wellchild can now provide 300+ additional hours of specialist care by a Well Child Nurse for a child with serious health needs, allowing families to stay together at home vs in hospital @Baby2Baby have received over 5,000 products to disperse to children in need, including cribs, books, backpacks, diapers and have received monetary donations from around the globe – from Guadalajara to Italy. When Markle and Prince Harry tied the knot, the ceremony was broadcast live around the world as millions of people tuned in to see the new royal husband and wife. Since then, Markle’s popularity has skyrocketed and she now finds herself on the cover of weekly tabloid magazines, commanding attention that she never before imagined. In fact, after Markle and Prince Harry went public with their relationship, Prince Harry feared for her safety due to the massive amounts of attention she was suddenly receiving.

What is the lie that everyone should stop believing about Meghan Markle?

Everyone should stop believing that just because Markle was an actress, that she was used to — or should be used to — the extreme attention and criticism she now receives. According to Town & Country, Markle wasn’t really prepared, and feels that there was a “misconception” that “because she was in the entertainment industry, the attention would be something she was familiar with.”

Markle once admitted she always lived a “quiet” life and that she was “never a part of the tabloid culture.” Looks like Markle really had to get used to life in the spotlight. And although the attention is new to her, we have to say that she is doing great.

Meghan Markle Joined a Yoga Class After Arriving in N.Y.C.: 'There Were Lots of Knowing Smiles' - Yahoo Entertainment

Meghan Markle beat her jet lag by taking a yoga class shortly after arriving in New York City on Friday, PEOPLE exclusively confirms.

The Duchess of Sussex and a friend headed to Modo Yoga, which offers hot yoga classes in an eco-conscious studio, in the West Village neighborhood of N.Y.C. The royal is in New York to see close friend Serena Williams play in the final of the US Open on Saturday.

Meghan, 38, joined a surprisingly full yoga class of up to 60 people on Friday.

“There were lots of sweet, knowing smiles” among some of the respectful patrons, a source tells PEOPLE.

And it comes as no surprise that one of her first stops in N.Y.C. was to a yoga class. Meghan has been a long-time advocate of yoga, with her mom Doria Ragland — who is an instructor in L.A. — playing a major role in her love for the practice.

“She has been going to Modo Yoga for many years and tries to do so whenever she is in New York,” the source adds. “It was the perfect remedy for jet lag.”

This isn’t the first time Meghan has turned to yoga to beat travel fatigue. During Meghan and Prince Harry‘s royal tour Down Under last October, she admitted she was fighting jet lag with a morning yoga session at 4:30 a.m.

Meghan arrived in New York on Friday afternoon after taking a commercial flight out of London at the last minute early in the morning.

Husband Prince Harry and 4-month-old son Archie are staying at home in Windsor — marking the first time Meghan is traveling without her baby. Meghan will return to Britain at the end of the weekend

Meghan’s surprise trip to New York comes as Buckingham Palace released more news and details of her upcoming royal visit to South Africa alongside Prince Harry, 34, and baby Archie.

Her return to New York City also has a special significance for Meghan. In addition to it being one of her favorite cities, it’s also where the California native celebrated her baby shower in February with some of her closest friends.

Meghan, Harry and Archie have also done some traveling as a family of three this summer. They headed to the Spanish island of Ibiza in early August, when Meghan celebrated her 38th birthday.
