D23: ‘Rise Of Skywalker,’ ‘Frozen 2,’ Marvel Plans Previewed In Anaheim - Deadline

REFRESH FOR UPDATES

It’s Day 2 of Disney’s D23 in Anaheim and the company’s mega-movies are front and center. Alan Horn, Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of The Walt Disney Studios, is taking the stage to preview the upcoming slate of films, a list that includes Black Panther and Frozen sequels as well as the final installment of the Star Wars Skywalker saga that began in 1977.

Horn’s preview in front of 6,800 often delirious fans draws on Hollywood’s gaudiest roster of hitmakers. Marching under his Walt Disney Studios banner are Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar Animation Studios, and, newly added, Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, and Blue Sky Studios.

With a title card on the overhead screen showing the titles of upcoming Fox releases (including Avatar) but Horn said the Fox acquisitions are “not quite ready” to be part of the D23 presentation. Then he brings out filmmaker J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfim, who arrive on stage to the soaring fanfare of John Williams’ signature Star Wars theme.

Rise of Skywalker opens Dec. 20 and closes out the Skywalker saga that began when George Lucas launched his era-defining space opera in 1977 with the first Jedi film, Star Wars, later renamed Episode IV: A New Hope.

“What an ending. I can’t wait for you to share what we have all been doing all these months under J.J.,” Anthony Daniels says in a voice that has the familiar lilt of his character, C3PO, to a strong ovation. Abrams (getting a bit choked up) praises the late Carrie Fisher and confides that the Star Wars icon put a “special thanks” to him in her memoir, The Princess Diarist , that seemed to foretell the fact that Abrams would direct this final chapter of the Skywalker odyssey.

Abrams says work is still underway on the trailer (groan from the audience) but says there is something to share. Screens show a terrific teaser trailer. Scenes of Imperial Star Destroyers floating in the upper atmosphere of a planet under siege. Fisher’s image flashes on the screen and sentiment wells up in the room. Scenes of lightsabers spinning in the air and much Jedi combat. The Emperor returns and Star Wars fans in the room cheer so loud that they could probably be heard on Endor.

Horn moves on to Marvel Studios and introduces the “man with the hat” as he calls Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, who comes on stage and brings out Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther, the only superhero film ever nominated for best picture. “We really, really want it to be right,” Coogler says by way of explaining why there’s no footage or even a title. There is a release date however: May 6, 2012.

Marvel Studios is the hottest brand in Hollywood after closing out a first decade of almost unreal success. But it moves forward with new challenges to overcome. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Tom Holland won’t be returning to the familiar Marvel ensemble while Scarlett Johansson (with one film left) and Jeremy Renner (with a Disney+ series left) are short-timers. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has also reluctantly deported Spider-Man back to Sony after revenue-split  renegotiations ended the properties unique cinematic dual citizenship.

Feige’s bid to create the next wave of Marvel stars hinges on minting new characters and heroes.  To that end he brings out the cast of the Eternals (including Angelina Jolie) who stand on stage and wave and then promptly leave without uttering a word. Feige announces Kit Harrington of Game of Thrones is joining The Eternals cast and the actor’s image flashes on overhead screen.

Feige cues up a surprise: overhead screens show Scarlett Johansson and David Harbour in a helicopter. The actors feign a scene and then break character to address the camera. “Can’t wait to see — can’t wait for you to see — what we’ve been cooking up,” Johansson says in the taped message from the London set of Black Widow.

Feige introduces Black Widow footage and it looks great. In scenes of dank alleys and cobblestone streets the footage follows Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff into atmospheric European espionage settings. “I have a specific skill set,” the super spy says at one point (evoking Taken) and action shifts into a high-velocity, close quarters combat scene in a kitchen (evoking the Bourne films). Scenes include a first look at Taskmaster, a relatively obscure character from the pages of Marvel Comics in the early 1980s.

The show keeps rolling. Dwayne Johnson emerges on stage to thunderous ovation and Introduces footage from new comedy, Jungle Cruise. Johnson, evincing a macho bluster, compares himself to Harrison Ford, Humphrey Bogart, and Michael Douglas and explains that the movie is an adventure that shows him “rescuing the girl.” Emily Blunt, his costar, comes on stage protesting her costar’s hubris (and riding in a vintage convertible). The pair keep up the playful facade and shows a different rebuttal trailer that shows the adventure more from the female point of view. The film opens July 2020.

Sean Bailey moves on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and reintroduces Anglina Jolie. “I missed her and I love playing her. In the first film we brought two people, two creatures, who were very different and historic enemies in many ways, but they are family and we brought them together.” In the new film those differences pull the characters apart. “What is family and what defines family is what you believe in,” Jolie says, talking about the nature of family bonds transcending blood relations.

Jolie brings out two costars, one returning and one new. Elle Fanning, now 21, says the return has deepened her affection for the franchise which has “marked very special moments in my life.” Michelle Pfeiffer, who gets a warm welcome, says working with amazing women on the project and the script were the selling points for her.

Footage from Maleficent sequel shows Jolie and Fanning debating romance. “Love doesn’t always end well,” Jolie says in a line that will evoke smirks from many.  Scene shifts to a royal dinner with Pfeiffer dripping jewels and dressed in a queen’s resplendent white regalia. The dinner doesn’t go well and ends with Maleficent unleashing bolts of green eldritch energy that create havoc.

Why Prince Harry Didn't Really Rush His Marriage With Meghan Markle - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are the subjects of intense public scrutiny these days, and their popularity is definitely taking a hit. Between rumors of Markle’s diva behavior and criticism of the couple’s habit of taking private jets, royal watchers are quickly losing patience with the one-time golden couple.

While they haven’t spoken out or made any statements themselves, the odds are good that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle know exactly what is being said about them. Fortunately, their relationship is built on a solid foundation. Read on to learn how these two originally met and how, contrary to popular belief, Prince Harry took his time before proposing to Markle.

How did Meghan Markle meet Prince Harry?

The love story of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle began in the summer of 2016. Markle was an actress, best known for her work on the popular television show, Suits. Prince Harry, the redheaded royal with a penchant for mischief, had dated a string of girlfriends but was beginning to earn the reputation of a confirmed bachelor.

It seems as though the two met on a blind date that was orchestrated by a mutual friend. Neither Markle nor Prince Harry has named the friend that set them up out of respect for their privacy, but fans suspect that it could have been a fashion designer named Mischa Nonoo or a close friend of Prince Harry’s, Violet von Westenholz.

Whomever it was that set up the first meeting, it was clear that sparks flew from day one. Prince Harry even revealed in their post-engagement interview that he knew Meghan Markle was the one from the “very first time we met.”

Even if Prince Harry was swept off his feet by the sophisticated actress, he took his time and really got to know her before taking the next step in their relationship.

How long did Meghan Markle and Prince Harry date?

Following their initial meeting, it seems as though the two started dating right away. It took around four months for the news of their relationship to leak to the press, and by that time, Markle and Prince Harry had already traveled the world together, establishing a deep connection with each other through a series of private, romantic trips.

Their relationship was confirmed to the media on November 2016 in a statement that also called for the public and press to treat Markle with respect and dignity.

Around the same time, reportedly, Markle started meeting Prince Harry’s family, including his father, Prince Charles, and brother Prince William.

Throughout the remainder of 2016 and all throughout 2017, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continued their romance in relative secrecy. Neither revealed many details of their affair to the press, but they were seen often together, traveling or enjoying downtime.

Although much of their relationship was conducted long-distance, Meghan Markle later revealed that they never went more than two weeks without seeing each other.

The couple got engaged after a year of dating

In November 2017, the palace announced that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had gotten engaged. The historic news marked the beginning of a fresh, modern start for the royal family, and a bold new time in Markle and Prince Harry’s lives. They tied the knot in grand style in May 2018 and welcomed their son, Archie Harrison, exactly one year later.

The couple has not always had an easy time of it, and there’s no doubt that the press has been on a crusade to portray them both in a negative light in months of late. Still, Markle and Prince Harry are strong enough to make it through the hard times and come out the other end of it better than ever.

Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy are still legally married - Page Six

Outgoing “Real Housewives of New York” star Bethenny Frankel really is married — because she never got a divorce from her second husband Jason Hoppy, his lawyer told The Post.

“Jason and Bethenny are still technically married,” Hoppy’s matrimonial attorney Robert Wallack told The Post. “While Jason has been pushing for years to have the judge sign the divorce judgment, Bethenny’s lawyers have objected.”

Manhattan Judge Michael Katz, who is overseeing their spilt, confirmed to The Post through a court spokesman that Frankel, 48, and Hoppy, 48, are still married.

“This issue has been addressed in open court on the record,” the judge said.

“It’s true that no judgment has been issued. It is not true that one side has objected,” he added.

“The judgment was never issued because an order of protection was issued by the Criminal Court which impacted the previously agreed to joint custody arrangement and Frankel subsequently brought an application to modify the agreement,” the judge said.

Closing arguments are due this month.

The order of protection was issued after Hoppy was charged with harassing and stalking Frankel in 2017. He agreed to a plea deal that required Hoppy to stay away from Frankel for six months to have the charges dismissed.

Frankel created a Twitter storm Friday by posting, “To my NY hwives: GO GET EM! I had to go since I’m the only one that is actually married…that’s how crazy this ride is. You are all amazing, beautiful and strong. Spread your wings and fly! Xoxo,” she wrote.

She tagged fellow costars Ramona Singer, Luann de Lesseps, Tinsley Mortimer, Sonja Morgan and Dorinda Medley — who are all currently single — and are set to appear on the upcoming 12th season of “RHONY.”

Fans immediately speculated that Frankel had quietly wed her current boyfriend Paul Bernon.

Queen Elizabeth 'Politely But Firmly Suggested' Where Harry and Meghan Should Live - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

While Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are certainly having their fair share of problems within the press, it is thought that within the royal family, the young couple is much beloved. Markle has grown especially close to Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Harry’s grandmother, and has been seen on many occasions sharing a giggle or a joke with the much-respected monarch.

However, even the queen prefers to have some boundaries in place when it comes to sharing her space. Read on to learn where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were originally considering setting up residence.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted to live in Windsor Castle

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got engaged in late 2017, the whole world became even more invested in their journey together. Thousands tuned in to the broadcast of their royal wedding in May 2018, with the world’s media tuned in to the exciting event, poring over every detail, from Markle’s simple, classic wedding dress to the sweet image of Prince Charles walking her down the aisle.

After the wedding bells stopped ringing and real life started anew, one of the first things that the royal couple had to figure out was where they would live.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle apparently originally wanted to live in Windsor Castle. The glamorous palace is where the couple got married and where Queen Elizabeth II spends much of her time on weekends and for various business engagements.

Still, the report reveals that when the couple brought up the idea to the queen, she “politely but firmly” suggested an alternate living arrangement.

It could have been that Queen Elizabeth II believed that Windsor Castle wasn’t a suitable space for a newly-married couple or it could have been the fact that she wanted them to have their own privacy, but either way, her suggestion turned out to be absolutely perfect.

Where do Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live now?

The residence that Queen Elizabeth II suggested for her grandson and his new wife was none other than Frogmore Cottage, a more private estate on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle accepted her suggestion and got to work renovating the property, ultimately spending millions of dollars getting it up to their exacting standards.

Furthermore, just prior to the arrival of baby Archie Harrison in May 2019, Markle and Prince Harry ordered even more work done to their new home, including setting up a nursery fit for royalty. Some of the updates that they did for their baby son’s nursery reportedly included eco-friendly paint, top-grade cameras, security windows, and the very best stereo system that money could buy.

All in all, it was the perfect place for baby Archie Harrison to come home to.

Could fans get a look inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s home?

While the interiors of royal residences have traditionally been kept very private, fans might get a small peek at Frogmore Cottage when the September issue of British Vogue, Forces for Change, becomes available for readers around the world.

Reportedly, Markle did a small photo shoot on the grounds of Frogmore Cottage, allowing royal watchers unprecedented access into their private accommodations.

Frogmore Cottage seems like the perfect home for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, granting them a sense of privacy while still keeping them close to the rest of the palace.

Whether or not it turns out to be their permanent home remains to be seen, but for now, the young family is enjoying their independence while establishing their own special nest.
