Box Office: Why 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's' $40M Debut Doesn't Guarantee a Fairy Tale Ending - Hollywood Reporter

The critically acclaimed Sony movie launched to an estimated $40.4 million in North America over the July 26-28 weekend, edging out Inglourious Basterds ($38.1 million) to score the best weekend opening of Tarantino's career (when adjusted for inflation, Inglourious still ranks No. 1 with $45 million). But it will need strong legs to gallop past a B CinemaScore and solid, but not spectacular, exit scores on PostTrak.

CinemaScores are nuanced. While a B grade might be OK in real life, it causes anxiety in the executive offices of Hollywood studios. No other Tarantino film has received less than an A- or a B+ except for Jackie Brown. His two top-grossing titles globally — Django Unchained ($450 million) and Inglourious Basterds ($316.9 million) — earned an A-. His last film, The Hateful Eight, earned a B+ and faltered worldwide ($148 million).

For Sony and Tarantino, the moment of reckoning will come during the movie's second weekend and beyond, as well as the  performance overseas, where Once Upon a Time doesn't roll out until August. Tarantino is a particularly huge draw in Europe.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a passion project for Sony studio chief Tom Rothman, and he strategically picked a corridor where that is devoid of big event pics, save for Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw, which debuts Aug. 2. The hope is that the film will play into September, and then get a renewed boost from awards attention.

Set in the winter and summer of 1969, the R-rated film is an intertwined twinned tale of a changing Hollywood and the Charlie Manson Family. Margot Robbie plays Sharon Tate, the actress and wife of Roman Polanski who, in real life, was murdered by Manson's followers.

"My feeling is that the B CinemaScore reflects the fact that casual audiences aren’t exactly enamored by the inner details of obscure Hollywood lore," says box office analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. "Cinephiles are eating it up, as are most critics, but the average theatergoer craves not these things. And I also think that the Manson elements were played up in a big way without really paying off. That probably turned off casual fans."

Heading into the weekend, some Hollywood studio execs believed Once Upon a Time would ride to $50 million in its debut, considering the combined star power of DiCaprio and Pitt, who have never appeared together before on the big screen. Pitt led the ensemble cast of Inglourious Basterds, while DiCaprio starred in Django Unchained.

Among box office analysts, opinion is divided.

"Naturally, a movie as long and as original as Once Upon a Time In Hollywood will polarize audiences for whom the movie may present more of a challenge than your typical, formulaic 90-minute summer entry," says Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore, who also notes its R-rating. "That said, the latest from visionary auteur Quentin Tarantino looks to have perhaps the longest playability of all of his films given the massively positive response from critics, guaranteed awards season attention and is perhaps the most accessible of all of his films."

Once Upon a Time runs two hours and 41 minutes, shorter than Django but longer than Inglourious.

The movie cost $90 million to produce after tax incentives and rebates, making it the maverick filmmaker's most expensive film to date (that doesn't include marketing). By some estimates, it will have to gross $400 million worldwide to turn a profit after production, marketing and talent deals.

Once Upon a Time skewed male over its opening weekend — as all Tarantino's films do — fluctuating between 58 and 54 percent, according to PostTrak. At the same time, it played somewhat younger than both The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained, with 60 percent of ticket buyers between ages 18 and 34 (that compares to 57 percent for Hateful Eight and 51 percent for Django. (PostTrak wasn't around when Inglourious Basterds was released in 2009.)

Not surprisingly, Tarantino's latest endeavor performed best on both coasts, with six of the top 10 locations in Los Angeles. It likewise over-indexed in New York City, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix and Toronto, among other locales.

Inglourious Basterds topped out at $120.5 domestically, a multiple of 3.2. Django had a multiple of 5.4, although comparisons are tough, since that film opened over the Christmas holiday.

"Some of the greatest movies of all time were not a big hit with audiences upon their initial release and went on to become fabled masterpieces that stood the test of time," says Dergarabedian. "2001: A Space Odyssey, anyone?"

'Orange Is the New Black' Finale: Taystee — Poussey Washington Fund - TVLine

Warning: The following contains spoilers from Season 7 of Orange Is the New Black. Do not keep reading until you have finished the series finale.

For Orange Is the New Black‘s Taystee, justice is not served. As the Netflix prison dramedy concludes, the inmate is likely to spend the rest of her life behind bars for a crime she did not commit. And yet, somehow, all hope is not lost.

In the 90-minute series finale, Taystee returns to her bunk to find an envelope from Tamika. Inside are the GED certificates for her four students, including the recently deceased Pennsatucky.

“I’m happy that [Taystee] finally gets to see some good come out of what she knows she’s capable of giving,” portrayer Danielle Brooks tells TVLine. “When she sees those GED certificates, specifically Pennsatucky’s, there’s a bit of, ‘OK, there is purpose for my life.'”

Coupled with the support of her friends, including Tamika, Suzanne and Mr. Caputo, Taystee finally finds it in herself to forge ahead. “It’s something to have another human being say, ‘I believe that your life is worth living.'” That, Brooks explains, is “what carries Taystee through, more than anything.”

After she decides to keep going, Taystee gets in touch with Judy King, and together they establish the Poussey Washington Fund, a micro-loan program for newly released inmates. Taystee also starts a financial literacy course to prepare the first micro-loan recipients for life on the outside.

For Brooks, the establishment of the Poussey Washington Fund is not a happy ending for Taystee. It’s just another step forward. “The happy ending went out the window a long time ago,” she says. “It was long gone even before [the life sentence], because I don’t think Taystee should even be in prison.” If anything, Taystee is on “a course toward newness,” and it was important to Brooks that that “newness” manifest itself in a physical way. She went to series creator Jenji Kohan and asked not to wear Taystee’s wig in the final scene.

OITNB 7x13 - Taystee New Hair, Final Scene“I said to Jenji, ‘This feels like I’m still holding on to all of that weight… all that stuff that Taystee has gone through,’ and I asked her if I could take the wig off.” Kohan thought it was a great idea.

When asked what she thinks the future holds for Taystee, Brooks remains cautiously optimistic.

“She’s the type of person that, 10 years from now, would call somebody like [founder of the Equal Justice Initiative] Bryan Stevenson and be like, ‘Hey, can you help me, because I was wrongfully accused.’ And I think he would help her out,” she says. “I think it’s just a matter of time for the system to change, and for Taystee to get the justice that she deserves.”

Tana Mongeau And Jake Paul Got Married And I'm Just As Shocked As The Rest Of Y'all - BuzzFeed

Not too long ago — about a month ago, to be exact — Tana Mongeau took it to IG and Twitter to announce her engagement to fellow YouTuber, Jake Paul.

People were on the fence about whether this was real or not — present company included — but Jake and Tana have continued to stay engaged.

And yesterday, on July 28 of the year 2019 in Las Vegas, NV, Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau got MARRIED!

Me and everyone's reaction when these two actually got hitched:

Tana Mongeau

On the morning of their wedding, Jake had the audacity — as most 'Tubers do — to post this vid on his channel titled: "we´re cancelling the wedding..."

BUT ALAS, it was only ~clickbait~ (aka the Gen-Z version of a Rick Roll).

RCA

These darn kids.

In the video, they showcased the "Jana" mansion — which is where the wedding took place — and let everyone know that their wedding would be available to livestream for $50*.

It was a casual affair:

Tag yourself. I'm the DJ in the back who doesn't give a damn.

As the night went on, we finally got our first glance of Tana with her bridesmaid/BFF Ashley Schwann and, dare I say, there was a tear in my eye?

And of course there were multiple looks — Tana made her way to the altar in dress No. 2!

Pretty in pink!

Finally, three hours late, the moment we've all been waiting for finally came: the wedding itself.

As much of a hot mess as this whole wedding was, them actually reciting their vows to one another was precious as hell.

These were Jake's vows:

"Every moment we spend together gives me chills...Your mind completes my mind...You’re my best friend."

And Tana's vows:

"You make things fun again for me...You make me so excited for every single day...I love you, Jake Paul, And I’m excited to marry you today."

Sealed with a kiss:

Is this for today? Is this for forever? Who's to say! All I can say right now is Mazel Tov to the happy couple!

Someone just threw a glass of champagne at jake and I at the fucking altar holy fuck HAAHAHAHAHAHA. jana don’t need no press. wow. just married. honestly made it better.... to slow dance while they scream. i love you @jakepaul ..... hello tana paul!

Tana Paul does have a nice ring to it...

Meghan Markle guest edits Vogue UK September issue with 'Forces for Change' cover - Fox News

Meghan Markle added another job title to her impressive resume, which runs the gamut from calligrapher to "Deal or No Deal" model to "Suits" star to philanthropist and Duchess of Sussex: She's now the guest editor of Vogue U.K.'s all-important September issue.

The theme of Duchess Meghan's featured issue of the fashion Bible is "Forces for Change," focusing on women who've made a difference in the world. The cover features photos of all the women profiled in the piece, as well as a small mirror to inspire readers to be their own forces for change.

Some of the influential women featured include Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, Christy Turlington, model Adwoa Aboah, diversity advocate Sinead Burke, "The Good Place" star Jameela Jamil, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, "Orange is the New Black" star Laverne Cox, "Crazy Rich Asians" star Gemma Chan, "Grown-ish" star Yara Shahidi and teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

Within the issue are also interviews with Michelle Obama and Jane Goodall, who recently met with Prince Harry and his and Duchess Meghan's son Archie.

Duchess Meghan herself doesn't appear on the cover.

MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY'S NEW FOUNDATION NAME REVEALED

Vogue U.K. editor-in-chief Edward Enniful said of the choice, “From the very beginning, we talked about the cover — whether she would be on it or not. In the end, she felt that it would be in some ways a ‘boastful’ thing to do for this particular project. She wanted, instead, to focus on the women she admires."

Duchess Meghan, 37, said in a statement, “These last seven months have been a rewarding process, curating and collaborating with Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, to take the year’s most-read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes and people making impact in the world today.”

MEGHAN MARKLE HAS STRUGGLED WITH 'INTENSITY OF THE SPOTLIGHT'

She continued, “Through this lens I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon within the issue to help bring this to light. I hope readers feel as inspired as I do, by the ‘Forces for Change’ they’ll find within these pages.”

MEGHAN MARKLE SAYS PUBLIC DOESN'T MAKE THINGS 'EASY' FOR HER AND PRINCE HARRY

Cox wrote on Instagram, “I am completely overwhelmed and overjoyed to share this cover. Being on the cover of Vogue magazine has been a dream of mine since I was a child. To get to share this cover with this group of women who inspire me, who are truly forces for change is deeply humbling. That it’s @britishvogue is even more special to me because British Vogue was the first to feature a black model on its cover, Donyale Luna in May 1966. Thank you so much @edward_enninful and guest editor Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Sussex for including me. Thank you to the entire team at Vogue for making this experience truly divine. #TransIsBeautiful.”

PRIYANKA CHOPRA SAYS HATE FOR MEGHAN MARKLE STEMS FROM RACISM

Shahidi also thanked Duchess Meghan for being featured, writing,  “Thank you @edward_enninful and the amazing HRH Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex @sussexroyal for considering me one of the #ForcesForChange for @BritishVogue, amongst these incredible change makers, and for using this iconic platform to continue to shift narratives and expand the role of fashion.”

Gemma Chan also expressed her joy at being a cover girl.

OPRAH WINFREY SAYS MEGHAN MARKLE IS 'BEING PORTRAYED UNFAIRLY,' HAS A 'WONDERFUL, LOVING HEART'

“Proud and honored to be included as one of the fifteen #ForcesForChange featured on the cover of the September 2019 issue of @BritishVogue, guest-edited by HRH The Duchess of Sussex @SussexRoyal,” the actress wrote.

Duchess Meghan shared a video preview of her "Forces for Change" collaboration and wrote on her @SussexRoyal account, “Guest editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring. To deep dive into this process, working quietly behind the scenes for so many months, I am happy to now be able to share what we have created. A huge thanks to all of the friends who supported me in this endeavor, lending their time and energy to help within these pages and on the cover. Thank you for saying “Yes!” - and to Edward, thank you for this wonderful opportunity.”

Inside Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau's chaotic wedding and reception - Page Six

LAS VEGAS — Jake Paul is no stranger to controversy, and his wedding did not disappoint.

The YouTube star, 22, married fellow influencer Tana Mongeau, 21, in Las Vegas on Sunday night in a spectacle of disastrous events.

The ceremony, which was held at a customized Graffiti Mansion with their name, wedding date and murals, started half an hour later than scheduled and lasted a mere 10 minutes.

Just as Jake’s best friend Armani Izadi proclaimed the two — who have been dating for just three months — husband and wife, a guest threw champagne at the couple, inciting a fistfight that saw the groom land a few punches.

Despite the dustup, which sent chairs flying and saw MTV camera crews chasing the culprit out of the venue, many questioned whether the fight was real or manufactured for more publicity.

Rumors of a faked relationship — made only stronger by a $125 cubic zirconium ring and a lack of a marriage license — have plagued Jake and Tana (collectively known as Tana) since the start of their brief romance.

Even Jake’s older brother, Logan Paul, has expressed doubts about the entire relationship and didn’t seem to change his mind much, despite serving as best man at the altar.

“Don’t get married when you’re 22,” Logan told Page Six when asked what advice he would give his younger brother and his new bride.

As for how long he thinks the marriage will last: “A month,” he said, before adding, “a month and a half.”

After the chaotic reception, the entire wedding party — including Oprah and Bruno Mars impersonators who were hired to attend and disguised as guests — eventually headed to the Sugar Factory where eager teenage fans waited and screamed for Mongeau and the Pauls.

Though a sign indicated that the maximum capacity was 262 people, the small restaurant was packed with YouTube stars and friends of the couple.

Jake cut the multi-tiered cake with a giant sword and continued hacking until the entire table crumbled and cake and frosting spilled on the dance floor. The groom wasn’t phased and instead danced in the dessert while his new wife filmed video.

Within 10 minutes of the unceremonious cake cutting, Jake announced that the party would end half an hour before schedule; “The owner of Sugar Factory is trying to shut us down right now,” Jake announced on a microphone. “Low key he’s being a bitch.”

Jake and Mongeau then left the Sugar Factory, presumably to continue their party. However, they were seen leaving in opposite directions.

YouTubers Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul get married: report - Fox News

Controversial YouTubers Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau got married in Las Vegas on Sunday night.

Though it’s still unclear if the marriage is in fact legal or one elaborate publicity stunt, the two said “I do” at the Graffiti Mansion, which had been painted white and covered in spray-painted rose patterns as well as their hashtag #JanaForever and the date. A live spray paint artist created murals of the couple during the event.

Paul, 22, and Mongeau, 21, exchanged vows during the over-the-top ceremony in front of hundreds of guests. However, the big night was tarnished when it ended in a brawl. A group of guests went running from the ceremony, sending chairs flying. It appeared that “Armani” Izadi, owner of the location, officiant and Jake Paul best friend, chased the group after a guest threw champagne on Paul.

BELLA THORNE FEUDING WITH EX TANA MONGEAU

The bride wore a strapless sequin gown with pink ruffled train while the groom wore A white tuxedo. The groom’s older brother, Logan Paul, served as the best man after apparently coming around to his brother’s new love despite publicly doubting that their 2-month relationship and one-month engagement was real.

Paul and Mongeau faced many skeptics who did not believe in their relationship due to a $125 cubic zirconium engagement ring, a previous faked marriage by Paul and the speedy timeline.

As of publishing time, there were no marriage license applications or registrations under either Jake or Tana’s name in Las Vegas; however, if they filed on Friday it would not show up in the system until Monday. It is also possible that the couple filed their marriage license in Los Angeles where they live.

However, the morning of their wedding day Mongeau posted a heartfelt video to her YouTube channel called “I love you, Jake Paul” declaring her intentions to be with him forever and acknowledging their haters and shared controversial pasts.

BELLA THORNE COMES OUT AS PANSEXUAL

On Paul’s YouTube channel, the couple filmed and posted every moment of their wedding day morning, including a drunken private jet flight, tuxedo shopping and gambling. They also announced that in addition to MTV filming the entire night for an episode of the YouTube-only reality “Tana Turns 21,” they provided a livestream for fans. However, many balked at the $50 price tag; Mongeau assured fans she would release all footage for free at a later date.

Notably absent was Mongeau’s famous ex-girlfriend Bella Thorne; the two had a heated exchange last week when Tana went to dinner with Thorne’s ex, rapper Mod Sun, amid a nasty breakup. However, Mod Sun was present at the event. Bravo’s Brielle Biermann was also present.
