An Iowa official and Tupac stan was fired. He says it wasn’t because of the ‘thug life’ cookies. - The Washington Post

Jerry Foxhoven had some wisdom to impart.

Then the director of Iowa’s Department of Human Services, Foxhoven was dispensing some career advice to one of his agency’s 4,300 employees.

“Yes, let’s talk,” he wrote in an email. “I can certainly relate, as I have made plenty of career changes from time to time and haven’t regretted any of them.”

Or, he added, in the words of his favorite rapper-poet-philosopher: “We gotta make a change . . . It’s time for us as a people to start makin’ some changes.”

It wasn’t the first time he quoted Tupac Shakur to his staff — and it was far from the only time, a proclivity some have speculated eventually led to his ouster.

The ex-government official and self-described “66-year-old white guy” has reportedly been a devotee of the lyrical luminary since the ’90s. He hosted “Tupac Fridays” and turned the office into a listening lounge. On his birthday, staffers gifted him baked goods decorated with the rapper’s likeness and the names of his biggest hits.

Then, on June 14, he sent what would be his final all-staff email celebrating the man who sometimes went by the moniker “Makaveli.” Father’s Day was coming up, Foxhoven noted, and so were two important anniversaries: his own two-year as department director and Shakur’s birthday.

“I hope you all enjoy the day as well — and take the time to enjoy one of his songs,” Foxhoven wrote. “‘Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are 2 steps ahead.’”

The very next workday, Foxhoven was forced to resign.

The timing of the email and Foxhoven’s departure — along with the breadth of his fandom — was first reported by the Associated Press, which received more than 350 pages of emails that included the words “Tupac” or “2Pac” in response to the outlet’s public records request.

But in interviews with other news organizations, Foxhoven has expressed doubt that it was his love of Shakur that prompted Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) to ask for his resignation.

“I think it’s a coincidence,” Foxhoven told the New York Times, adding that Reynolds had requested a meeting with him days before his June 14 email.

“I always try to assume the best of everybody, and I can’t imagine that [the governor] would base her decision on the Tupac incident,” he told NPR. “If this is the reason, I’m really disappointed.”

Reynolds’s spokesman, Pat Garrett, directed The Washington Post to a statement he provided the AP, wherein he attributed Foxhoven’s dismissal to “a lot of factors.” But he did not answer questions about Foxhoven’s Shakur fixation and whether that played a role.

Foxhoven did not respond to repeated interview requests.

One message hinted that someone at the department had complained to lawmakers about the frequent quotations, and in another exchange, Foxhoven acknowledged that not everyone enjoyed them.

“I love your 2pac messages . . . and the fact that you still send them (despite the haters) makes me appreciate them even more,” one employee wrote him.

“I agree totally. I am going to hang in there on him — despite all of the naysayers,” Foxhoven responded.

According to NPR reporter Tim Mak, who diligently documented the contents of the email dump on his Twitter page, the positive responses far outnumbered the negative reactions.

“Oh my gosh!!! I ABSOLUTELY love it!!” another staffer wrote.

“Thanx for sharing that :)” said another.

Foxhoven told Mak that he often uses his love of rap to “reach out to our staff, tell them that I’m human, have a little levity.” On the 22nd anniversary of Shakur’s death in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting, Foxhoven admitted to a staff member that he “might seem a little down.”

He said he began listening to Shakur’s music nearly 30 years ago, when the rapper was still alive. He’s a West Coast guy, he said, referring to a famous cross-country beef between rappers from the East and West coasts, and his second favorite artist is Snoop Dogg.

The longtime Drake University professor took over the $7 billion agency as it navigated multiple scandals and dealt with low morale. Reynolds, who appointed and praised Foxhoven in June 2017, told him last month that she decided to “go in a different direction,” AP reported.

It’s unclear what, if any, farewell message Foxhoven sent to his team. But, if he had a chance, he might’ve chosen the final bar from one of Shakur’s seminal songs:

“And it’s crazy, it seems it’ll never let up. But please, you gotta keep ya head up.”

Paul McCartney Has Been Secretly Writing an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ Musical - Variety

The pop superstar who once released a movie and album called “Give My Regards to Broad Street” really does have designs on Broadway, after all. It was revealed Wednesday that Paul McCartney has already written a song score for a stage musical adaptation of the 1946 Frank Capra film classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The former Beatle, who wrapped up a tour with a rapturously received show Saturday at Dodger Stadium, has been at work for some time with writer Lee Hall — responsible for “Billy Elliot” on stage and the “Rocketman” screenplay — and British producer Bill Kenwright, according to published reports confirmed by Variety.

“Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me,” said McCartney in a statement obtained by the Associated Press. “But Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun. … ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is a universal story we can all relate to.”

The aim is to launch a production in late 2020 in the UK with a later move to Broadway.

How far along is he? Far, according to a report in the New York Post from a writer who says he’s already heard McCartney’s recordings of 10 songs.

“On a recent trip to London, I got to listen to McCartney’s stunning demo tracks,” writes Johnny Oleksinski. “The songwriter segues easily into the musical theater style, while still giving his diehard fans that soulful McCartney sound. Every time a Beatle sings, an angel gets his wings. … On the CD, the singer performs every role from George Bailey to Mr. Potter and even tries his hand at acting. The more than 10 finished songs sound like a bona fide lost Beatles album, with one spectacular number’s rousing ending bringing to mind the ‘Na Na Na Na Na’s of ‘Hey Jude.'”

Oleksinski reports that the producer obtained rights to the film from Paramount in 2016 and reached out to McCartney, who took an interest and “mailed him the opening song” last year. “Our hero was a musical theater writer!” Kenwright told the Post.

Paul McCartney is adapting 'It's a Wonderful Life' as a stage musical - USA TODAY

LONDON (AP) — Paul McCartney is writing his first stage musical, an adaptation of the classic movie "It's a Wonderful Life."

The ex-Beatle is collaborating with "Billy Elliot" playwright Lee Hall and West End producer Bill Kenwright.

McCartney said he'd never considered writing a musical, but after meeting Kenwright and Hall three years ago, "found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun."

Hall said McCartney's "wit, emotional honesty and melodic brilliance brings a whole new depth and breadth to the classic tale."

Frank Capra's 1946 film tells the story of George Bailey, a small-town banker wracked with regret who is shown the value of his life by a guardian angel.

Producers said Thursday they are aiming for a late 2020 launch for the show. Its dates and venue have not been released.

Beyonce sends 'love letter to Africa' with new Lion King album - CNN

To accompany the release of the 3D animated version of the movie, Grammy award-winning artist, Beyonce, has shared details of her upcoming 14 track album titled 'The Lion King: The Gift.'
Be prepared for the 'Lion King' cast photo
Beyonce, who is also in the Lion King cast, has four solo songs on the album alongside collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, and her daughter, Blu Ivy.
Many of Nigeria's top Afrobeats stars including Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, and Yemi Alade appear on the album. Tiwa Savage and Wizkid also feature.
Ghana's Shatta Wale, Cameroon's Salatiel and South Africa's Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly are also on the soundtrack.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Beyonce describes the soundtrack of the movie, 'Spirit' as a 'love letter to Africa'.
Spirit starts with Swahili phrase "Uishi kwa mda mrefu Mfalme" meaning "Long live the King" and already has more than a million views on YouTube since its release on Tuesday.
Beyonce says the album features many acts from Africa because she wants it to be about authentic music from the continent.
"I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa and not just use some of the sound or my own interpretation of it," she said in the interview.
She is also wearing custom made African outfits and accessories from Dakar, Senegal in the music video.
The album release is an acknowledgment of the growing reputation and reach that African music, especially the Afrobeats genre has, says music analyst, Segun Akande.
"Building a major release around Afrobeats as a movement and Afropop as a sound is a major cosign for what they've achieved," he told CNN.
"When you consider how big the Lion King franchise is, the album has the potential to put Afropop in the global conversation and introduce a younger generation across the world to our music," he added.
'The Lion King' hits familiar notes in adapting Disney classic
Nigerian artist, Wizkid, is one of the more successful Afrobeats stars in recent times. His 2016 Afrobeat-infused feature on Drake's hit, One Dance, made him the first Nigerian artist to top Billboard's US Hot 100 chart.
Africans on social media are sharing positive reactions to the tracklist on the Lion King album.
This is not the first time African music is being placed at the center of a major Hollywood movie.
In 2018, The Black Panther soundtrack featured top South African artists like Babes Wodumo and Sjava, and the album was credited with putting a global spotlight on the South African music genre.

Box Office: 'The Lion King' Targets Royal $150M-Plus U.S. Bow - Hollywood Reporter

No other film is daring to open nationwide opposite the Disney remake.

Look for the box office to roar back to life this weekend with the debut of Jon Favreau's The Lion King.

If prerelease tracking is any indication, the Disney tentpole will easily earn $150 million or more in its North American debut. Globally, it should finish the weekend with a total $400 million to $450 million after opening to $54 million in China last weekend.

The Lion King uses groundbreaking photorealistic CG animation in re-creating the classic 1994 animated film. So far critics are divided, with the movie's current RottenTomatoes score resting at 59 percent.

The star-studded voice cast includes Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Seth Rogen, Alfre Woodard, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, John Kani and John Oliver. James Earl Jones reprises his original role as Mufasa.

Outside of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, only three of Disney's live-action titles have opened north of $100 million, including Beauty and the Beast. The Jungle Book debuted to $103.3 million, while Alice In Wonderland started off with $116 million.

After unfurling early in China, The Lion King opening day in almost every foreign market is this weekend, with the exception of Hong Kong (July 25), Japan (Aug. 9) and Italy (Aug. 21).

No other film dared to open nationwide against The Lion King, which will surely serve to increase Disney's market share following summer blockbuster hits Aladdin and Avengers: Endgame. The latter is close to surpassing Avatar to become the top-grossing film of all time, not adjusted for inflation.

Overall, however, year-to-date revenue is running more than 8 percent behind last year at the same time.

'Today' meteorologist Dylan Dreyer reveals pregnancy after miscarriage - Fox News

There’s sunshine on the horizon for NBC’s Dylan Dreyer.

The “Today” show meteorologist announced Wednesday she’s expecting her second child after revealing earlier this year that she had suffered a miscarriage.

FIRST BABY BORN IN THE US TO MOTHER WHO RECEIVED UTERUS FROM DECEASED DONOR

“I’m pregnant,” Dreyer said in the second hour of “Today,” revealing that baby No. 2 is due in January.

Dreyer, 37, who welcomed son Calvin with husband Brian Fichera in 2016, opened up about her miscarriage in April, shortly after fellow “Today” show co-host Jenna Bush Hager announced her third pregnancy, and co-anchor Hoda Kotb revealed she had adopted a second baby girl.

“I’m devastated, and I have to go to work on the ‘Today’ show and be happy and smiling and pretend like nothing’s wrong,” she recalled. “We push [emotions] down and get through the show, I go to the doctor and they do an ultrasound. The baby’s still in there. It’s fluke bleeding.”

Dreyer has maintained a positive outlook, hoping her story resonates with others.
