‘Men in Black: International’ Leads Box Office With Muted $28 Million - Variety

Hollywood seems to be coming down with a contagious case of franchise fatigue this summer, as “Men in Black: International” and “Shaft” become the latest sequels largely dismissed by moviegoers in North America.

Sony’s “Men in Black: International” led ticket sales at the box office this weekend with $28.5 million, but still fell short of expectations. Those receipts represent roughly half of what the previous installments in the sci-fi series earned during their first weekend in theaters.

The latest entry, toplined by Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth, wasn’t expected to reach the same heights as the original films starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, but analysts anticipated a start above $30 million. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the sequel sees Thompson and Hemsworth team up as black-suited agents protecting the Earth from a series of alien attacks. “Men in Black: International” is now banking on moviegoers overseas to make the action adventure a hit. Sony co-financed the movie with Hemisphere and Tencent, spending $110 million to produce the film, roughly half of what it cost to make “MIB 3.”

“Men in Black: International” had a larger footprint with foreign audiences, generating $73 million from 56 overseas territories, bringing the film’s global start to $102.2 million.

Critics praised the chemistry between Hemsworth and Thompson, who first shared the screen in “Thor: Ragnarok,” but reviews were otherwise uninspired for the follow-up, which comes seven years after the latest installment and 25 years after the first film. It carries a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were equally unenthusiastic, giving “MIB: International” a B CinemaScore.

“Men in Black: International” wasn’t the only sequel this weekend that got the cold shoulder from ticket buyers. Warner Bros. and New Line’s “Shaft,” starring Samuel L. Jackson, flopped with a dismal $8.3 million in sales from 2,952 locations. That’s less than half of what box office watchers predicted the follow-up would make in its first three days of release. By comparison, 2000’s “Shaft” debuted with $21.7 million. The latest remake reunites three generation of Shaft men, played by Jackson, Jessie Usher, and Richard Roundtree, who starred in the original 1971 movie. It carries a price tag near $35 million.

Positive reviews didn’t salvage this weekend’s other new nationwide offering, Amazon’s “Late Night.” The comedy, written by Kaling and co-starring Kaling and Emma Thompson, finished in ninth place with $5.1 million after the studio expanded the comedy to 2,220 venues. It debuted in limited release last weekend, collecting a solid $249,654, which brings ticket sales to $5.4 million. “Late Night,” about a TV host who makes a diverse hire to save her talk show from becoming a ratings disaster, was well-received after premiering at Sundance, where Amazon shelled out $14 million for distribution rights in one of the biggest sales of the festival.

The final newcomer this weekend was “The Dead Don’t Die,” Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy starring Adam Driver, Billy Murray, Selena Gomez, and Chloe Sevigny. The film, which debuted to mixed reviews at Cannes, opened at No. 12 with $2.35 million from 613 theaters. According to Focus Features, the studio distributing the movie, that figure marks the largest opening weekend of Jarmusch’s career. Males accounted for 58% of tickets sold, while 64% of audiences were over the age of 35.

“We’re thrilled to see Jim’s biggest opening and his top grossing weekend ever with this film,” said Lisa Bunnell, Focus Features’ president of distribution. “His unique take on the zombie genre delivers his signature brand of humor, style and substance for moviegoers.”

In a not-so-distant second place, Universal and Illumination’s “The Secret Life of Pets 2” brought in $23 million during its sophomore weekend of release, marking a 49% decline from its inaugural outing. The animated sequel has now earned $92 million in North America.

Disney’s “Aladdin,” a live-action remake of the Arabian musical cartoon, nabbed the No. 3 spot during its fourth weekend in theaters. It collected another $17 million, boosting its domestic haul to $264 million.

Another Disney title, “X-Men” entry “Dark Phoenix,” was a big-budget misstep last weekend. It dropped to fourth place, adding $9 million, a massive 73% downturn in ticket sales compared to its first weekend in theaters.

Rounding out the top five is Paramount’s “Rocketman.” The fantasy biopic, which sees an inspired Taron Egerton dramatize the life and times of Sir Elton John, picked up $8.8 million in its third outing for a total of $66 million in North America.

Overall, ticket sales at the domestic box office are down just over 7% compared to last year, according to Comscore. A number of upcoming blockbuster-hopefuls, including Disney’s “Toy Story 4” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” are expecting to breath some life into an otherwise lackluster summer moviegoing season.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry share new photo of Archie for Father's Day - Page Six

In celebration of Father’s Day, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have shared a new image of their 1-month old son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

“Happy Father’s Day! And wishing a very special first Father’s Day to The Duke of Sussex,” the official Instagram account for the couple captioned a photo of the infant on Sunday.

The photo of Baby Sussex comes days after reports that Markle and Prince Harry reportedly hired a nanny — with an “extensive” NDA — for their son.

“I’ve heard from very reliable sources that the new nanny who has been appointed by the Sussexes has had to sign quite an extensive non-disclosure agreement,” royal expert Katie Nicholl recently told Entertainment Tonight.

Last weekend, Markle, 37, made her first public appearance since introducing baby Archie to the world at the Trooping the Colour celebrations in London to officially mark Queen Elizabeth II‘s 93rd birthday, where she was spotted wearing a new diamond ring.

Meghan participated in her first Trooping the Colour last year, weeks after she and Harry, 34, tied the knot.

Inside North West and Penelope Disick's Over-The-Top Candy Land-Themed Birthday Party - ELLE.com

It’s not a Kardashian-Jenner party if it’s not over-the-top, and that goes for the kids, too. The family celebrated Penelope Disick’s seventh birthday and North West’s sixth birthday on Saturday, throwing them a joint Candy Land-themed party.

The lavish party was held at one of the family member’s extravagant homes, which was transformed into a real-life candy land, including a colorful walkway, an ice cream truck, and cakes by New York bakery Flour Shop, which were filled with sprinkles and chocolate. Of course, the party was overflowing with candy like gummies and lollipops.

Kardashian posted photos and videos of the party to her Instagram story, showing Penelope and North decked out in candy-themed outfits. North added some colorful ribbon to her hair as well as a few (necessary) candy necklaces.

Kardashian also posted a sweet tribute to her first child on Instagram, sharing photos of the mother-daughter duo over the years.

“Happy Birthday my sweet girl! The last 6 years have been the best of my life raising you and seeing you grow up. Mommy loves you forever and beyond!” she wrote.

While Penelope and North’s birthdays are about a month apart (Penelope’s is July 8 while North’s is June 15), the cousins usually have a joint celebration for the occasions. In 2018 the theme was unicorns while 2017 was all about Moana. Whatever they decide on for next year’s theme, it’s sure to be an extravagant get-together.

What Did Kim Kardashian Do Before Becoming Famous? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Kim Kardashian is often called the celebrity that’s famous for doing nothing, or people say that she’s famous for being famous. However, that’s not exactly true. Although Kim doesn’t have a traditional celebrity career — like a musician, actress, or athlete — you can’t say that she did nothing to achieve success. Kim actually worked very hard at becoming a celebrity. Let’s take a look at what Kim’s life was like before she was famous.

What was Kim Kardashian’s childhood like?

Way before everyone knew Kim’s name, she grew up in Beverly Hills. However, her childhood was far from average. She was surrounded by famous and wealthy people from a young age. Her father, lawyer Robert Kardashian, was close friends with NFL player O.J. Simpson and made headlines when he represented Simpson during his 1994 murder trial. Kim attended the private, all girls, Marymount High School, graduating in 1998.

Kim Kardashian was a closet organizer

Kim started her professional career as a closet organizer to the stars. She worked with celebrities like Serena Williams, Cindy Crawford, and Paris Hilton. In fact, Kim can be seen in scenes from Hilton’s reality show, The Simple Life, organizing Paris’s closet. In a 2006 interview with E!, Kim said: “I go to my client’s homes and I help them take whatever they don’t want and I sell it for them on eBay.”

Kim Kardashian worked the media with Paris Hilton

In the early 2000s, Kim became good friends with Paris. The pair could often be seen together, and many say that Paris is the reason Kim was able to become a “celebrity for doing nothing.” Paris may have taught Kim exactly how to get people talking about her, and how to get the media’s attention.

In an interview with Rolling Stone about this time period, Kim said: “We’d go anywhere and everywhere just to be seen. We knew exactly where to go, where to be seen, how to have something written about you. All you had to do is go to this restaurant, or this party, talk about whatever you want to talk about, and it would be in the paper the next day.”

The media strategy worked, and people began to know who Kim was. After a sex tape scandal, and an offer for a reality show, things really took off for Kim.

The Kardashian family owned DASH stores

In 2006, Kim, along with her sisters Kourtney and Khloe, opened a retail store called DASH. It was a boutique-style store that sold clothing and accessories. The experience of running the stores was documented on their new reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

DASH opened its first location in Los Angeles, but soon they also had stores in Miami and New York City. Spin-off shows Kourtney and Kim Take Miami and Kourtney and Kim Take New York featured the opening of these locations.

After 12 years, the Kardashians decided to close the stores and focus on other parts of their careers. In a statement, Kim said: “We’ve loved running DASH, but in the last few years we’ve all grown so much individually. We’ve been busy running our own brands, as well as being moms and balancing work with our families. We know in our hearts that it’s time to move on.”

They may have been too busy to continue running the stores, but many speculated that they were also losing a ton of money. In fact, people who visited the store said it was often empty of customers, dirty, and filled with unpleasant sales people. The Yelp reviews of the stores back up these allegations.

Even though the DASH stores were ultimately not successful, the Kardashians have had plenty of success in other areas. Mainly, the reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, has been running for a full 16 seasons and has multiple spin-off shows. At this point, there’s no stopping what the Kardashian name can accomplish.

Simon Kinberg says X-Men: Dark Phoenix failure "is on me" - Flickering Myth

dark-phoenix-600x375

It was meant to serve as the grand finale to the near-twenty year franchise, but things didn’t go according to plan for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix, with the film failing to catch fire with fans and critics and scoring not only the worst reviews of the series, but also the lowest box office opening weekend.

Dark Phoenix – Fox’s second crack at adapting the iconic The Dark Phoenix Saga storyline – grossed just $33 million domestically in its opening weekend, and is reportedly looking at a loss in excess of $100 million once it finishes up its theatrical run.

Speaking to THR, long-time X-Men writer-producer and Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg has shared his thoughts on the film’s failure, stating that:

“”It clearly is a movie that didn’t connect with audiences that didn’t see it, it didn’t connect enough with audiences that did see it. So that’s on me. I loved making the movie, and I loved the people I made the movie with. I love these characters. I love these world. I’ll be super excited to see what Marvel does with them.”

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX.  During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all.  Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet.  The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Kota Eberhardt (The Persian Connection) as Selene, Andrew Stehlin (Hacksaw Ridge) as Red Lotus, and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings).

Julia Roberts says 'Pretty Woman' originally had a very different ending - Fox News

Julia Roberts would have been part of a very different "Pretty Woman" if the fates hadn't intervened.

The Oscar winner revealed that the original script was very dark and gritty compared to the rom-com it's now known as.

During Variety's "Actors on Actors" interview, Roberts, 51, told fellow actress Patricia Arquette that she auditioned, at first, for a very different movie.

'HOMECOMING' STAR JULIA ROBERTS OPENS UP ABOUT 'MENTAL CHALLENGE' OF FILMING NEW AMAZON SERIES

“So many, many, many years ago, one of my early auditions was for a movie called '3,000,'”  Arquette said. “Most people don’t know that '3,000' was the original 'Pretty Woman' script. And the ending was really heavy.”

Roberts described how that "3,000" ended with her character being shoved out of a car and someone "threw the money on top of her, as memory serves, and just drove away, leaving her in some dirty alley.”

ELIZABETH HURLEY, 53, SIZZLES IN HOT PINK BIKINI

“So it really read like a gritty art movie,” Arquette added. “When you first read it, it was that incarnation.”

Roberts explained that the "small movie company" that owned the movie rights "folded over the weekend" so she was out of a job pretty quickly. But soon after, Disney picked up the script and the producer.

JULIA ROBERTS ADMITS SHE'S A STRICTER PARENT AFTER PLAYING JUNKIE'S MOTHER IN NEW MOVIE

“I thought, ‘Went to Disney? Are they going to animate it?’” the "Homecoming" star added. “[Director] Garry Marshall came on, and because he’s a great human being, he felt it would only be fair to meet me, since I had this job for three days and lost it. And they changed the whole thing. And it became more something that is in my wheelhouse.”

“Thank God it fell apart," Roberts added because she felt she "couldn't do" that original role.
