'America's Got Talent': 21-year-old singer gets golden buzzer after performing epic original song - AOL

Joseph Allen is not just an amazing performer and a creative powerhouse, he's a real inspiration.

The 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Texas took to the America's Got Talent stage on Tuesday, where he proved to be one of the most powerful, charismatic and magnetic performers the show has seen in years.

"I've always had this thing of just saying something then accomplishing it," Allen said in a pre-taped package, explaining that, when he puts his mind to something, it becomes a singular focus and he makes it happen. "I taught myself how to mix music, how to produce, how to engineer, and now I'm here."

Before he even opened his mouth to sing, Allen's smile and charm was already earning cheers from the audience, and when judge Simon Cowell asked why he chose to enter the competition this year, Allen's inspiring response floored the crowd.

Wrote an original song for his appearance on the show

"I see myself as being someone who can make a major impact in the world, and I just want to see how much of a footprint I can leave on earth before I leave."

It was clear the judges had no idea what to expect, especially after Allen said he'd written an original song just for his appearance on the show, but the moment he began his performance it was evident that he was a powerhouse.

The song - which includes the likely prophetic lyrics "after today, the world's gonna know my name" - was a perfect showcase of his talents and was met with an overwhelming standing ovation.

After getting effusive praise from Cowell, Julianne Hough and Gabrielle Union, judge Howie Mandel explained that his performance was something truly memorable.

"From the moment you walked out, your smile was electric," Mandel marveled. "Life is a series of moments, and people at home are talking about this moment. People in this room are talking about this moment."

As Mandel spoke, he excitedly climbed onto the judges' table and declared, "You said you want to leave a footprint. Well I'm gonna give you the footprint you need," as he stomped hard on the Golden Buzzer, showering the young singer in shimmering confetti.

America's Got Talent returns next Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, where more hopefuls will audition for a spot in the next round of the competition.

What's on TV Wednesday: 'The Handmaid's Tale' and 'Black Mirror' - The New York Times

THE HANDMAID’S TALE Stream on Hulu. After a twist-filled Season 2 finale left audiences discordant (or just asking why June didn’t get into that truck), “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns to Hulu for a third round. Continuing its interpretation of the novel by Margaret Atwood, the acclaimed series will bring back Elisabeth Moss as June, whose tale of resistance in a New England reshaped by environmental catastrophe and a patriarchal, totalitarian state has inspired intense fandom and real-world activism. Season 2 saw Serena Joy Waterford, the complicated and often staggeringly evil character played by Yvonne Strahovski, getting more attention — a trend that continues. “These super powerhouse female roles are layered and complex, and the story lines are amazing,” Strahovski recently told The New York Times, “and it’s so fun as an actor to come to work and play with that.”

BLACK MIRROR Stream on Netflix. Charlie Brooker’s anthology series raises one eyebrow at technology and its other at human nature. The three unconnected episodes that make up the show’s fifth season, all debuting Wednesday, each run over an hour. Some discussion is bound to be centered on the season’s most famous cast member, Miley Cyrus, who plays a pop star in trouble in an episode called “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too.” Another episode, “Striking Vipers,” imagines a fictional virtual reality video game that adds a new dimension to a friendship in more ways than one. And “Smithereens” centers on a rideshare-enabled kidnapping that also brings up questions about the power of social media companies and offbeat tech executives.

GODZILLA (2014) 5:30 p.m. on TNT. Godzilla’s stature may have been cut down slightly by last weekend’s release of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” which was met with disappointing sales at the box office. But there’s no denying this monster’s staying power in the popular imagination. The new movie is a sequel to this 2014 effort, which gave the classic city kicker a new coat of paint through modern-day visual effects. It’s good for a night in; the kind of movie during which you can safely get up to answer the door for pizza. It is “at once bloated and efficient, executed with tremendous discipline and intelligence and conceived with not too much of either,” A.O. Scott wrote in his review for The Times. Gareth Edwards, who went on to direct “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” directed this reboot.

NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH LESTER HOLT 6:30 p.m. on NBC. Tonight’s episode of this NBC News program will be broadcast from Normandy, with a program dedicated to the 75th anniversary of D-Day. It includes interviews with two American D-Day veterans and a visit to the Airborne Museum in Ste.-Mère-Église.

2019 CMT MUSIC AWARDS 8 p.m. on CMT. The country harmonizers Little Big Town will host this year’s CMT Music Awards in Nashville. Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker, Luke Bryan, Toby Keith and Zac Brown Band are among the show’s performers.

Dean McDermott defends wife Tori Spelling after 'coward' trolls insult her bikini pic - Fox News

Dean McDermott fired back at social media trolls saying unkind things about his wife, Tori Spelling, after she posted a shot of herself in a bikini.

Spelling, 46, shared a photo of herself in her swimwear while working on the upcoming “90210” revival in Vancouver, Canada. She posed in a modest two-piece alongside costars Gabrielle Carteris and Jennie Garth.

TORI SPELLING CRITICIZED ON SOCIAL MEDIA AFTER PROMOTING MUFFINS AS HEALTHY SNACK FOR KIDS

“Sunday Family Dinner…” she captioned the image.

It didn’t take long for some fans to criticize the actress for posting the photo, with one user noting that they were “cringing” and another replying that “the phrase ‘trying too hard to be relevant’ comes to mind.” The second user even went as far as to criticize Garth's looks.

The 52-year-old “Slasher” star took to the comments section of Spelling’s post to fire back at the negative responses and to defend his wife and her costars.

“I love how you haters have private accts!! Let’s see what you trolls look like ya cowards!!!” he wrote, calling out the two users for hiding their accounts from the public.

This isn’t the first time that McDermott has clapped back at haters on social media in an effort to defend his wife. In March, he posted a video response to air his grievances about comments Spelling received after revealing she gives their children muffins as snacks.

“I am sick and tired, sick and tired of everybody taking a shot at my wife, Tori Spelling. Just because she’s a celebrity, they think they can say and do whatever they want. She posted about a snack,” he said. “It’s a snack, people. Haven’t we given our kids a snack before? Huh? Cakes, cookies whatever. It’s a snack.”

Godzilla: King of the Monsters' Director on the Movie's Biggest Spoiler - Gizmodo

During a visit to Toho Studios in Japan last month, io9 asked director Michael Dougherty and star Ken Watanabe about the death of Dr. Ishiro Serizawa in King of the Monsters, namely if Watanabe was going to appear in future films.

The scene is the most moving part of the action film, and Watanabe was terrific as Serizawa. The movies won’t quite feel the same if he’s truly gone. Dougherty chuckled and said, “No one’s really gone.”

Consider our eyebrows raised.

“Akihiko Hirata, the first Dr. Serizawa, he appeared many times in the Godzilla movies,” Watanabe said, adding that “hopefully” he will return.

“Yeah, Dr. Serizawa’s evil twin,” Dougherty joked. “That’s where you get to wear the eye patch.”

I asked Watanabe if he was sad when he read the script and saw that his Serizawa dies in the movie. He replied that when he read it, he loved how the story centers around a scientist and how philosophical the movie gets regarding the relationship between humans, civilization, and science.

Even though Dr. Daisuke Serizawa died in the 1954 Godzilla film, Hirata remained closely associated with Godzilla throughout his life, appearing in King Kong vs. Godzilla as “Doctor,” Son of Godzilla as “Fujisaki,” Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla as “Prof. Hideto Miyajima,” and Terror of Mechagodzilla as “Dr. Shinji Mafune.”

“I like the idea where he comes back as 400-foot tall radioactive Serizawa,” Dougherty joked. “Like, Serizilla.”

“That would be great,” I said. Well, it would.

Why 'Jeopardy!' champ James Holzhauer made a low wager on his losing night - Fox News

When James Holzhauer made a relatively low wager in the Final Jeopardy round on Monday night's episode of "Jeopardy!," it left a lot of viewers scratching their heads — but "Jeopardy!" experts say that the professional gambler's bet was the best he could have made given the circumstances.

Holzhauer bet just $1,399 in Final Jeopardy, leading even Alex Trebek to remark at the unusually low number, but Brad Rutter, the all-time leader in "Jeopardy!" winnings, told the Washington Post that it was actually the absolute best way for Holzhauer to win during Monday's game.

Holzhauer had $23,400 leading into Final Jeopardy, with Emma Boettcher in first place with $26,600 and third place contestant Jay Sexton with $11,000. Rutter explained that Holzhauer's only chance at victory would be if Boettcher guessed the Final Jeopardy question incorrectly and Holzhauer guessed correctly.

If Boettcher, who wagered $20,201, guessed incorrectly, she would have $6,399 remaining. Holzhauer, if he guessed correctly in that scenario, would have won with $24,799. In the off chance that Sexton answered correctly while Boettcher and Holzhauer each guessed incorrectly, he could have won. As a result, Holzhauer made a bet that would have had him leave with $1 more than Sexton's maximum potential winnings of $22,000, Rutter noted.

If Holzhauer had bet everything and Boettcher guessed the Final Jeopardy question correctly, Boettcher would have still won.

'JEOPARDY!' LOSES TOP RATINGS SPOT TO 'JUDGE JUDY' WITHOUT JAMES HOLZHAUER

Holzhauer explained to Action Network that Rutter's analysis was correct.

“I knew I could only win if Emma missed Final Jeopardy, as there was no way she wouldn’t bet to cover my all-in bet, so my only concern was getting overtaken by third place, and I bet just enough to make sure of locking him out," he said. "Betting big would have looked good for the cameras, but now I turn my straight bet (Emma misses) into a parlay (Emma misses, and I get it right).”

Holzhauer wasn't too broken up about the loss. He told The Atlantic that he was resigned to his fate before it was sealed. “By the time Final Jeopardy rolled around, I knew my goose was cooked if Emma answered correctly. It’s a little like needing a team to miss a last-second field goal — nothing you can really do but watch," he said. "I made peace with my fate before the clue for Final was even revealed.”

Holzhauer, who won 32 consecutive games before his defeat, finished his reign with $2,464,216, which includes the $2,000 he earned in his final game. That total comes short of the record set by "Jeopardy!" legend Ken Jennings, who earned $2,520,700 within 74 victories in 2004.
