‘BTS Paved The Way’: BTS Fans Trend Support on Twitter After K-pop Group’s Two Billboard ‘Top Group’ Nominations, Including ‘Top Group’ - Newsweek

Globally-renowned K-pop Group BTS was nominated for two Billboard Music Awards, including Top Group on Thursday morning. Fans were proud of how the band is leading the way for K-pop artists alike. The BTS Army spoke loudly on Twitter Thursday morning and claimed the group is “paving the way.” This phrase quickly became a trending topic on Twitter, along with the hashtag #BTSBillboardTopGroup, which was the number one trend worldwide.

The trending threads were filled with fans of all kinds, from those who have been supporting BTS since their start—a few said it’s incredible to see their favorite group receive such a high honor after so much time—as well as admirers who are passionately gearing up for BTS’s next album, Map of the Soul: Persona, which will be released on April 12.

Along with Top Group, BTS was nominated for Top Social Artist. This comes as no surprise, as BTS has held the title for the award since 2017, when they took the crown from Justin Bieber who had won the award each year from 2011 to 2016. It’s also no surprise because BTS was the most tweeted about celebrity group on Twitter in 2018, according to a list published by Vogue.

The most intriguing part of Thursday’s celebration, however, may be the phrase “BTS Paved The Way,” which started trending at number 13 on Twitter worldwide, and quickly shot to number 3 at the hand of fans who used the phrase as many times as possible in one tweet. So what, exactly did BTS pave the way for? And how?

BTS fan Olivia Valencia, who lives in the Philippines and uses Twitter username @glyjinstanbts, told Newsweek the phrase comes from a fan-wide understanding that BTS’s break into global fandom has and will pave the way for other K-pop groups who crave western exposure.

According to Valencia, when BTS was first nominated for Top Group in 2017, other K-pop fandoms attacked the BTS Army and claimed they were searching for Western validation. In a series of screenshots Valencia preserved from conversations with competing group fans, many claimed the Billboard Top Social Artist award was “meaningless” and claimed their groups did not need a nomination to be considered “legendary.” Since then, Valencia claimed the fandoms who once tore BTS down now mimic the successful BTS fan behavior online that skyrocketed BTS to global attention. They do this by tagging their favorite groups in posts to hit Twitter algorithms and trying to get key phrases trending.

It’s the exact formula BTS fans execute so well. The second BTS does something notable—which happens very often—as a collective, the Army is able to trend a topic, phrase or even their own hashtag #BTSArmy or #ArmyArmyArmy in celebration.

Valencia explained how BTS has paved the way with originality in a K-pop community saturated with acts who assume they must be perfect and adhere to strict guidelines. "BTS really paved the way," she explained. "Like seriously, K-pop is nothing more than an industry that produces very manufactured groups. I feel really happy that there's a K-pop group like BTS that writes and produces their own music, and speaks of real life struggles. something I can relate to."

Though BTS is paving the way in K-pop, Valencia explained their success is relevant to any artists aiming to break into the American market. She referenced prior articles in Newsweek, as well as BTS articles in publications like Forbes and Teen Vogue. "As someone from Asia, we would be extremely awed if an Asian artist would be featured in international or global papers."

Though fans exclaim BTS have paved the way with their talent and global reach, it’s undeniable the fandom has played a role in the group’s mega-exposure over time, as the community shows the reach of a single group when a world-wide collective stands proudly together.

Jamie Lynn Spears came out in a show of support for her sister Britney Spears after the pop star checked into a wellness facility.

“Yup, she rode the bus home with me after my first day of school, cus she’s the fn best #WCW [Woman Crush Wednesday],” she wrote.

A source close to the 37-year-old singer told Fox News Wednesday that Spears “checked into a wellness facility,” where she will “likely remain for at least a few weeks.”

Spears appeared to address the circulating reports Wednesday on her Instagram.

“We all need to take time for a little ‘me time,’” she wrote.

Spears’ boyfriend, Sam Asghari, reposted Spears’ Instagram message and wrote, “It isn’t weakness. It’s a sign of absolute strength, people should only be inspired by this, at least I am.”

The insider told Fox News that the “Womanizer” singer “felt that she needed to take some time to focus on herself” while she cares for her father Jamie Spears following his “life-threatening” colon rupture.

In January, Spears announced she was taking an indefinite work hiatus and is putting her Las Vegas show on hold.

"I am dedicating my focus and energy to care for my family," Spears said in a statement at the time. "We have a very special relationship and I want to be with my family at this time just like they have always been there for me."

Jason Momoa was devastated when 'Game of Thrones' co-star Emilia Clarke suffered brain aneurysms - Fox News

When "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke suffered brain aneurysms, she wasn't the only one who was terrified.

Her co-star Jason Momoa revealed that he was scared he'd lose his friend and admires her bravery for revealing what was once a secret struggle with the potentially life-threatening condition.

"I've kind of been a part of that whole situation for a very long time, so we've had so many scares and trying to find the right way to come out and help," Momoa, 39, told Entertainment Tonight. "I just think it's beautiful that... she's so brave in helping the world and trying to raise awareness."

EMILIA CLARKE SAYS RESPONSE TO HEALTH BATTLE REVELATION HAS BEEN 'OVERWHELMING'

"I'm very sad, because we almost lost her the first time," the "Aquaman" star said. "So, I love her to bits and she's here and she's going to do great things with it and teach the world."

In an essay published last month, Clarke, 32, revealed that she suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm in 2011 while working out with her trainer.

'GAME OF THRONES' ACTRESS EMILIA CLARKE IS A 'WARRIOR,' CO-STAR LENA HEADEY SAYS

"The diagnosis was quick and ominous: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain," she wrote. "I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture. As I later learned, about a third of SAH patients die immediately or soon thereafter. For the patients who do survive, urgent treatment is required to seal off the aneurysm, as there is a very high risk of a second, often fatal bleed. If I was to live and avoid terrible deficits, I would have to have urgent surgery. And, even then, there were no guarantees."

The "Solo" starlet underwent several brain surgeries and a grueling recovery process after discovering another aneurysm on the other side of her brain — and fans of the HBO series were none the wiser, because her performances never suffered. She "survived," she says, and added that "in the years since my second surgery I have healed beyond my most unreasonable hopes. I am now at a hundred percent."

Celine Dion to release new album 'Courage,' embark on first world tour in a decade - Fox News

Celine Dion is ending her Las Vegas residency soon, but the superstar singer will keep herself busy by releasing new music and embarking on a new world tour later this year.

Dion told a packed venue Wednesday that she will kick off her Courage World Tour in Quebec City, Canada, on Sept. 18, and will make stops in more than 50 cities, including Miami, Los Angeles, Montreal, Chicago and Brooklyn. The 51-year-old Canadian singer said she is expecting to release "Courage," her 12th studio album, in November.

"It's going to be the Celine that you know," she said of the upcoming album. "Celine at 51. The Celine that you know. The Celine with producers and writers she's worked with. It's the Celine with new producers and new songwriters. ... The sound will change a little bit, and music changes. But I will always remain who I am."

CELINE DION COMMENTS ON FANS WORRIED ABOUT HER APPEARANCE

Dion performed a few songs including "I'm Alive" and the "Titanic" anthem song "My Heart Will Go On" after making the announcement during a special fan event at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. She started the event with a video of her hitching a ride from Vegas to Los Angeles after her truck broke down.

The Grammy-winning singer said she felt motivated recently to get back on the road and create music for the first time since the death of her husband-manager René Angélil in 2016.

Dion said she feels more "centered, balanced and spiritually connected" these days.

After more than 15 years, Dion will finish her critically acclaimed Vegas residency at Caesars Palace in June. The singer has toured since starting her Vegas show, but the Courage tour will be her first North American tour since her Taking Chances World Tour in 2009.

Fortnite: Is Prince Harry right to want game banned? - BBC News

Prince Harry has called for a ban on Fortnite, saying the survival game beloved by teenagers around the world, was "created to addict".

His words add to a growing debate among health workers, governments and lobby groups about whether gaming can be harmful to health.

The remarks come just before the Gaming Bafta Awards, one of the biggest nights in the UK's gaming calendar, which take place in London on Thursday evening.

But is he right?

What did Prince Harry say?

At an event at a YMCA in west London, the Duke of Sussex launched a scathing attack on social media and gaming.

Of Fortnite, he said: "That game shouldn't be allowed. Where is the benefit of having it in your household?

"It's created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. It's so irresponsible.

"It's like waiting for the damage to be done and kids turning up on your doorsteps and families being broken down."

He added that social media was "more addictive than alcohol and drugs".

What is Fortnite?

The game has become a global phenomenon and the aim is simple - survive for as long as possible. Each match has a total of 99 other players with the same goals and lasts around 20 minutes, depending on how successful you are.

It has 200 million registered players worldwide and is free to download, but players can spend money on in-game purchases.

Players can play alone, as part of a four-person squad or a 20-member team, either with friends or people they do not know.

What do doctors think?

Earlier this month, a GP told an 11-year-old boy that he was "prescribing" a two-week ban from computer games such as Fortnite and Minecraft.

Dr Amir Khan said that he was concerned about the impact gaming was having on the boy's life.

It was a light-hearted attempt to draw attention to a serious issue but, anecdotally, more doctors are seeing links between gaming and effects on both the physical and mental health of young people.

And it is not only youngsters who are affected. Research shows that 200 divorces in the UK from January to September 2018 mentioned addiction to Fortnite and other online games as one of the reasons for relationship breakdown.

However, Scottish university researcher Andrew Reid said he thought that the game was not "addictive" and suggested that using the term could stigmatise regular video game players. He added that some research showed "positive characteristics of play".

What do the gamers say about addiction?

There are plenty of gamers who play for long periods of time and say it has no impact on their wider social lives or health.

But some have had enough.

Matus Mikus joined Game Quitters, an online forum made up of thousands of people who have turned their backs on games, after his relationship broke down because he was spending too much time gaming.

James Good is a self-confessed gaming addict, once spending 32 hours playing without a break. The problem led to him falling behind at university.

"My grades were slipping as a result of playing too many games. I didn't eat, sleep or leave my room. I escaped my problems via games," he recently told a group of MPs.

And he said the effect of playing was triggering physical responses.

"Games fire up response systems in your brain and other things don't bring you as much joy," he told the MPs.

"I was thinking, 'Why would I spend time with my friends when I can play video games?'.

"It felt good to get points, trophies, beat people. It fuelled my competitiveness - but I realised I wasn't truly happy."

James admits he became depressed, but stopped short of saying that gaming was the root cause.

He added that gaming as a teenager was not a problem, because he combined it with an active life, playing sports and going to Scouts, and his parents helped him manage his time.

Being without parental guidance at university appears to be the trigger that turned his gaming from a much-loved activity to an obsession.

He too turned to Game Quitters and admits to having withdrawal symptoms when he followed its challenge for new members to give up gaming for 90 days.

"I was getting headaches, moods and I had to lock my computer in a cupboard," he said.

What's the view of the games firms?

The BBC has asked Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, for comment but has not yet had a response.

Gaming is booming and the UK games industry is worth a record £5.7bn, in part thanks to Fortnite, according to new figures from gaming trades body Ukie, which said that there was "little evidence" gaming causes harm to health.

Dr Jo Twist, Ukie's chief executive and chairwoman of Bafta Games, said: "We care about players.

"We want to help parents and carers who don't play games themselves to feel better equipped and knowledgeable about safe and responsible game play, and the positive impact games can have on people's lives."

She added that game age ratings "should be taken seriously" and that parents and carers should use online resources to ensure their children played in a responsible way.

Ukie points to research conducted by Prof Andrew Przybylski, an experimental psychologist at the Oxford Internet Institute, who has said that only 0.3% of gamers might experience problems controlling the time they spend playing video games.

The World Health Organization disagrees and last year recognised excessive gaming as a mental health disorder.

Does gaming need greater government scrutiny?

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is currently interviewing gamers, games firms and other experts as part of its ongoing inquiry into technology addiction.

It is due to report back on its findings later this year, but chairman Damian Collins told the BBC: "We have invited Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, to give evidence to our investigation, which is examining the addictive nature of gaming, as well as links between gaming and gambling.

"We hope that Epic will accept our invitation. We will certainly raise with them the significant concerns that Prince Harry has expressed about Fortnite, and how they respond to his call for it to be banned."

But it is not just the UK that is looking into the links between gaming and the health of youngsters.

China, the world's largest gaming market, is increasingly concerned about addiction and the impact of gaming on children's eyesight, and has taken strong measures to crack down on the issue.

China's tech giant Tencent has tightened checks on the age of people playing online games - checking identities and ages against a police database.

Children under 12 are only able to play for an hour a day. Older children can play for up to two hours, but not during a night-time curfew.
