Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex addressed the feud rumors between him and his older brother, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge in Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, saying they were “on different paths.”
The documentary that aired in the U.S. a week ago followed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, as they toured Africa along with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
We learned a lot by watching the program and since it aired we’ve learned of “one very good reason” the brothers may be headed in different directions. Continue reading to find out why a royal expert says they’re forging their own, separate ways with the monarchy.
Prince Harry on rumored feud with Prince William: ‘Stuff happens’
Prince Harry’s one-on-one interview with British journalist Tom Bradby — a man the royal’s known for years — happened next to a bonfire in Africa while the Duke of Sussex fielded questions about his late mother, Princess Diana, — he called her death “a wound that festers” — and revealed the terrible way he remembers her.
After opening up about her and saying he’d protect his family, Bradby asked Prince Harry about an alleged rift between him and Prince William.
“Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under… inevitably, you know, stuff happens,” he said.
The 35-year-old admitted there’s been some tension between him and his brother. He also said they’re headed in different directions but at the end of the day the two men are still brothers who will always be there for one another.
“But, look, we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me,” Prince Harry told Bradby.
He continued, “We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but I love him dearly. The majority of stuff is created out of nothing.”
Prince Harry ended the discussion on the topic by saying this: “But as brothers, you have good days and you have bad days.”
The Duke of Sussex didn’t outright say whether or not he and Prince William had been fighting but he did make it sound like they’ve had their differences. And to be honest, that seems pretty typical. What siblings haven’t argued from time to time?
The ‘one very good reason’ for their ‘different paths’
So, what’s the “one very good reason” Prince Harry and Prince William are “on different paths”? Their place in the line of succession to the throne.
According to Marlene Koenig, author and royal family expert, “William and Harry are on different paths for one very good reason: William is second in line to the throne,” she told Express.
“He is going to be king. His future is being mapped out,” she explained. “Harry will be the younger son of a king with a different trajectory.” Prince William’s standing means he has less freedom to explore as opposed to Prince Harry.
The Duke of Cambridge is busy preparing to be the leader of the monarchy, learning as much as he can from his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his father, Prince Charles. Find out how Prince William learned he’d be king one day.
With the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — Prince Harry dropped down to sixth in the line of succession with Archie behind him. Being in sixth place allows him some wiggle room to explore a wider variety of things — even show more PDA with the Duchess of Sussex in public — and naturally, follow a path unlike that of his brother.
